Giani Raghubir Singh was on Friday appointed the Akal Takht Jathedar.

It was announced after the SGPC executive committe meeting here.

Akal Takht officiating Jathedar Giani Harpreet Singh was relieved of his charge with the SGPC saying that he had volunteered to quit.

Giani Sultan Singh, the “Granthi Singh” of the Golden Temple, has been appointed Takht Sri Kesgarh Sahib Jathedar.

Giani Harpreet Singh will continue to serve as Jathedar of Takht Damdama Sahib.

Announcing this, SGPC president Harjinder Singh Dhami said Giani Harpreet Singh who held the dual charge of the Akal Takht and Takht Damdama Sahib had willingly decided to vacate the Akal Takht’s “acting” charge.

Giani Harpreet Singh, who is currently on a foreign tour, is expected to return shortly.

Dhami said, “It is wrong to assume that the SGPC has removed Giani Harpreet Singh. I was in touch with him. He had volunteered to leave the “acting” charge of the Akal Takht. He will continue to hold the charge of Takht Damdama Sahib. There was a long-pending demand for  appointing a regular Jathedar of the Akal Takht, which has been met,” 

Giani Raghubir Singh will also hold the additional charge of “Head Granthi” of the Golden Temple.
