                Dec 29  The Shiv Sena has hardened its
                stand against the screening of the controversial
                Deepa Mehta film "Fire" with Uddhav
                Thackeray, son of the Sena supremo Bal Thackeray,
                contending that the movie continued to be
                objectionable even if the Hindu name of a key
                protagonist in it was changed.

 Urban Land Ceiling Act to go
 NEW DELHI,
        Dec 29  The Union Cabinet today decided to bring
        forth an ordinance to repeal the Urban Land (Ceiling and
        Regulation) Act, 1976, to facilitate development and
        disposal of excess vacant land for various purposes,
        particularly housing.

 |  Mountbatten favoured Sikhs: DattaPATIALA, Dec
        29  A new pathbreaking research on the partition of
        Punjab indicates that Lord Mountbatten's interference in
        the Boundary Commission Award was aimed at favouring the
        Sikhs, helping India retain Gurdaspur district and also
        getting Ferozepore and Zira tehsils which had earlier
        been awarded to Pakistan by the commission.
