Jeev finishes runner-up

BANGKOK, Nov 15 (UNI) — It was second time unlucky for India’s Jeev Milkha Singh in as many weeks as he lost to South Africa’s James Kingston in a tense sudden death play off to finish runners-up in the Omega Tour’s $ 200,000 Thailand Open Golf here today.

Jeev, who lost to Jyoti Randhwa in the Hero Honda Masters in Delhi last week, carded six under 66 in the last round and totalled 16 under 272(69,67,70,66) and drew parity with James Kingston, who returned two under 70 for 272(65,64,69,70) and had to play an extra hole to decide the winner.

After missing a three foot putt for victory at the last, Kingston wasted another straight forward birdie on the first extra hole but emerged winner when Jeev pushed his three foot effort just wide.

Kingston collected a cheque of $ 32,300 while Jeev had to once again content with $ 22,260 cheque.

First two round leader Jyoti Randhawa fired two under par 70 last round and slipped to fourth place with 14 under 274(65,66,73,70) to earn $ 9000.

Arjun Atwal returned five under par 67 round to finish at the 8th slot with 12 under par 276 (74,65,70,67) to collect $ 6000.

Atwal’s city mate Amritinder Singh fired his second successive three under par 69 round and ended 9th with 11 under par 277(71,68, 69,69) for $ 5000.

Another Indian Amandeep Johl had three over par 75 to finish joint 45th with one over 289 (70,74,70,75). He earned $ 1,120.

Delhi’s Vivek Bhandari had two over 74 round and was placed 51st with three over 291 (71,75,71,74).

Kingston fired five birdies and three bogeys for a final round 70 and a 16 under par aggregate, while European Tour regular Jeev forced the play-off after carding a superb six under 66.

South Africa’s Craig Kamps missed making it a three-way play-off after dropping a shot at the final hole, but still finished third on 15 under after matching Jeev’s 66.

One ahead at the start of the day, Kingston extended his lead to three at the turn after touring the front half in 34. Jeev playing the flight ahead reduced the gap with consecutive birdies at 10 and 11, before drawing level with another birdie at the par five 16th.

But Kingston gave himself a one shot cushion going into the last when he holed a 12 foot birdie at the par three 17th, only to drop back level with Jeev after his three-putt bogey at 18.

"Although I felt calm on the 18th in regulation play, I’am sure I was very tense because I pushed it wide. I didn’t want to leave myself a downhill putt coming back," added the 32-year-old from Potchefstoom.

"I’m playing well but it’s just not happening for me at the moment," said a disappointed Singh, who has now had three-top three finished in as many weeks.

"I tried really hard but again it was a case of leaving too many putts in the jaws of the hole. But I’m happy with the way I’ve played since returning to Asia though obviously disappointed not to win after finishing third once and runner-up twice." Jeev said.

Kamps secured his highest finish of the season after firing nine birdies and three bogeys, while India’s Jyoti Randhawa, finished fourth with Thailand’s Boonchu Runangkit.

Thailand’s Putra Cup Champion Thongchai Jaidee continued his run of form with a three under 69 and finished tied for sixth place on 13 under with Simon Yates of Scotland.

Bengal woman hurdler Debi Bose set a new meet record in the 100m hurdles by winning in 13.93 seconds, which was 0.02 seconds better than the old mark of 13.95 seconds set by M.K. Asha of Karnataka in 1995.

Courtney Walsh injured

KIMBERLEY (South Africa), Nov 15 (Reuters) — West Indies paceman Courtney Walsh sprained his ankle on the opening day of the four-day game against Griqualand West yesterday.

200 Test wkts next target: McGrath

SYDNEY, Nov 15 (AFP) — Rejuvenated Australian pace spearhead Glenn McGrath has set himself a target of reaching 200 test wickets in this summer’s Ashes series against England, starting this week.

McGrath has also stressed the importance of Australia starting well in the two back-to-back Tests against Alec Stewart’s tourists in Brisbane and Perth, which open a hectic schedule of five matches in seven weeks.

Just back from Australia’s successful tour of Pakistan, McGrath said he was fit and very happy with his bowling.

McGrath claimed 12 wickets at 28.67 in the three-Test series in Pakistan after a string of injuries had curtailed his recent appearances.

He had hoped to reach the 200-wicket mark last summer but only managed three tests due to injury. His series haul in Pakistan lifted his Test tally to 178.

"I guess 200 is the next major goal. I set myself five wickets a Test, so we’ve got five tests (against England)... 25 wickets," McGrath said today.

"Hopefully, I’ll knock that off well and truly this summer."

McGrath said he thought Australia would do well in the Ashes if they could maintain the standard of the past two years.

"The first two Tests will be important... whoever gets the early ascendancy should go well. We had a great tour of Pakistan and if we can continue our form there we’re going to be real tough to beat.

India to host 3 TT international meets

THANE, Nov 15 (PTI) — India would host three international table tennis tournaments including the Asia Cup at Mumbai next year.

The Secretary of the Table Tennis Federation of India (TTFI), Moolchand Chauhan, told reporters here yesterday that 25 countries are expected to participate in the junior Asian championship to be held at Bangalore in September next.

The third international tournament to be held in the country would be the Asian veteran championship to be held at Goa in the last week of September 1999 while the exact dates for all the three tournaments would be fixed later.

The annual general body, which met here, also decided to ban players for a minimum of one year and a maximum of three years if found over-aged, he said.

All the players who participated in the ongoing Western India Table Tennis Tournament at Thane went through a medical check-up and the TTFI would soon announce the names of the over-aged players, he added.

The TTFI also decided to give the next year's senior men's and women's nationals to Orissa while the junior nationals would be held at Chandigarh and the sub-junior nations would be conducted by Kerala State Table Tennis Association, Mr Chauhan said.

The Bhilai Steel Plant at Madhya Pradesh will host the inter-institution table tennis tournament.

However, the dates and the exact venue of all the tournaments would be fixed later.

The 1998 sub-junior nationals to be held at Surat in December have been postponed and will now be held at Surat from February 1 to 8 next year, Mr Chauhan added.

East Bengal rout Jurong 3-0

SILIGURI, Nov 15 (PTI) — Calcutta giant East Bengal sealed the fate of Jurong F C (Singapore) with a 3-0 win in a group-A match of the Tata Tea 104th IFA Shield Football Tournament at the Kanchenjungha Stadium here today.

Bengal’s Nizerian forward Opoku scored two goals for his club while another Nizerian Sulle Musha struck the third just before the long whistle. All the three goals came in the second half.

After the barren first half Opoku converted a free kick in the 53rd minute for the first goal. The Nizerian then put the ball into the net for the second time off a Sreekanta centre.

Sulley Musha’s power-packed shot from 30 yards in the 88th minute gave no chance to Jurong’s custodian Keman who was left stranded.

Jurong lost to JCT (Phagwara) 1-2 in their first match here on November 13.

Today’s match which saw a better turnout of football lovers was stopped twice — for three minutes in the first half and for two minutes after lemon break following a series of rough tacklings and scuffles between players.

In the 24th minute players of both sides started exchanging fisticuffs in the mid field with Opoku and Jurong’s defender Bharooch lying on the ground following a rough tackle. Both were shown yellow card. The match was stopped for three minutes.

The situation turned worse in the second half. The referee, P K Bose had to seek his assistant’s help to identify the Jurong player who had kicked an East Bengal player. This incensed players of the Singapore team who attacked the assistant referee.

Altogether seven yellow cards — three to East Bengal and four to Jurong players — were shown in today’s match.

East Bengal’s striker Dipendu Biswas left the ground after being injured 10 minutes before the final whistle as he was hit by Jurong’s custodian Keman. Keman was also shown the yellow card.

Jurong F C would take on Tollygunj Agragami on Tuesday while East Bengal would lock horns with JCT (Phagwara) on same day. The semi-final was scheduled for November 19.
