Cultural Scene
An evening of devotional music

CHANDIGARH, April 12 — Pandit Vidhyadhar Vyas once again captivated the music lovers of the city by his sublime rendering of classical and devotional singing at Ramakrishna Mission Ashram this evening.

Son of the legendary maestro Pandit Narayan Rao Vyas Sangeetacharya, Dr Vidyadhar Vyas, who also heads the Music Department of Mumbai University, gave his renderings in the shuddha gayaki of Gwalior Gharana.

Pandit Vyas chose to commence the evening with the rendering of raga Multani, beginning with an elaborate ‘alaap’, he presented the vilambit khayal in Ektaal, ‘Gokul Gaon Ke Chhora’.

The raga was elaborated, first, with beautiful patterns of short combinations of notes, then with elaborate spiral and gamak taans. His use of intricate Sargams added to the beauty of the raga.

The rendering of drut khayal ‘Aaj Bajat Badhai Barsane Ki’ in Teentaal presented delightful melody in rhythm.

Pandit Vyas exemplifies shuddha gayaki in his renderings, whether it is in vilambit or drut laya. His voice has an emotive quality, not commonly found among classical singers.

With renderings of a tarana in Teentaal “Ta Na De Re Na Dir Dim’, Pandit Vyas presented intricate patterns of ‘layakari’ and a remarkable precision of voice culture. His effortless gliding notes in different octaves unfolds a rich musical imagination, almost in a surrealistic form.

Following the tradition of bhajan gayaki initiated by Pandit V. D. Paluskar, Pandit Vyas transformed the evening by his devotional renderings in raga Nand. ‘Ram Nam Dhyana’ and ‘Ajahu Na Aaye More Shyam’ both compositions expressed in a soulful voice, the utter loneliness of a soul, yearning for solace, with the blessings of the divine.

The musical evening was organised to commemorate the birth anniversaries of Shri Ramakrishna, Sri Shrada Devi and Swami Vivekananda.

Consumer Courts
CHB told to pay costs and interest
Tribune News Service

CHANDIGARH, April 12 — The District Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum-I, comprising its president, Dr H.C Modi, and members Dr R.K Behl and Mrs Shashi Kanta, has imposed costs and interest on the Chandigarh Housing Board for delaying the refund of an applicant.

The complainant, Mr Sansar Chand Sood of Sector 40, had applied for an HIG flat in Sector 44 and sent a bank draft of Rs 5,000 as earnest money to the board. The complainant was not successful in the draw of lots held on June 6, 1986. He applied for refund of the earnest money vide letter dated February 29, 1988. The original receipt was also sent to the board.

The board did not refund the amount despite several reminders. Mr Sood, therefore, filed a complaint before the consumer court.

The board issued the refund cheque to Mr Sood after the filing of the complaint in May 1995. It pleaded that the relevant file was missing in the records, which had caused delay in pay the refund and that the delay was not intentional.

The forum held that “it was obligatory on the part of the board to remit the amount to the complainant within a reasonable period of his being unsuccessful in the draw. But the said amount remained with the board and it had not been paid upto the date when this complaint was made.”

The forum directed the board to pay interest at the rate of 12 per cent per annum on Rs 5,000 with effect from July 1,1988 to May 26, 1996. It further imposed costs of Rs 1,000.Back
