Mr Atal Behari Vajpayee may still be rooted in the thinking and ideology of the saffron party he belongs to, but over the years he has successfully projected himself as a person who thinks Indian and acts Indian.

EC revises poll schedule
Poll dates rescheduled
NEW DELHI, Aug 3 — Bowing to public demand, the Election Commission today announced a new schedule for the 13th Lok Sabha poll as three of the four dates announced earlier clashed with major festivals and also posed administrative and logistical problems. The new election dates are September 5, 11, 18, 25 and October 3.

BARNALA, Aug 3 — The rebel SAD group led by local legislator Malkiat Singh Kitu today announced its course of action against the party’s Sangrur candidate, Mr Surjit Singh Barnala, even as Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal directed party General Secretary Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa to rein in his supporters.

NEW DELHI, Aug 3 — The Supreme Court today gave a clean chit to former Petroleum Minister Satish Sharma in the controversial case of allotment of petrol stations and LPG dealerships from his discretionary quota by reversing its 1996 order imposing a fine of Rs 50 lakh and ordering a CBI probe.

ROHTAK, Aug 3 — The Chief Minister, Mr Om Prakash Chautala, directed the police to register a case against the Meham MLA, Mr Balbir Singh, alias Bali Pehalwan, on the charge of intimidating the Deputy Commissioner, Mr Arun Kumar, here on Monday.
