DD officer arrested
NEW DELHI, Aug 12 (PTI) — Deputy Director-General of Doordarshan M.B. Pahari was arrested by the CBI for allegedly possessing assets to the tune of Rs 1.74 crore and remanded to 14 days' judicial custody by a special judge today. The CBI, in a press note, said his assets, including Rs 1.23 crore in cash, were many times over his known sources of income. Mr Pahari was arrested after raids on various locations, including his residential premises in Andrews Ganj Extension here, and an apartment at Charmwood, Suraj Kund, in the neighbouring Haryana.

ONGC strikes oil
NEW DELHI, Aug 12 (PTI) — State-owned Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) has struck oil in a well in the deepwater Krishna Godavari (KG) offshore basin, official sources said here today. The well is located 24 km northeast of Amalapuram coast of Andhra Pradesh. The well was spudded at a water depth of 1000 feet using ONGC's drill ship Sagar Vijay, the sources said. Further testing was in progress. With this strike, the prospects of identifying more hydrocarbon potential in the KG offshore looks promising.

Rebels kill DSP
KATHMANDU, Aug 12 (AP) — Maoist rebels killed a senior police official and injured a constable in an ambush in the remote hills of midwest Nepal, Interior Security Minister Purna Bahadur Khadka said today. The rebels yesterday attacked the police patrol at Rakhu village in Kalikot district, 500 km west of Kathmandu. The village is in a remote mountainous area with no road or communication facilities. Deputy Superintendent of Police Kailash Kumar Chetri was killed and a constable injured in the attack.

Dissident's rally
SEOUL, Aug 12 (AFP) — Thousands of riot police took to the streets of South Korea's capital today to prevent dissidents and radical students holding an unauthorised rally backed by North Korea. The massive show of force came a day before the opening of what dissidents called a "pro-unification" festival to be held simultaneously in South and North Korea. The festival is to end with a gathering in Panmunjom on Sunday to mark Korea's liberation from Japanese 1910 to 1945 colonial rule.

NEW DELHI, Aug 12 — The Bahujan Samaj Party has decided to contest the East Delhi and Outer Delhi seats in the forthcoming elections. The party today nominated Mr Mohammad Nahid from East Delhi and Mr Brahm Singh Bidhuri from the Outer Delhi Lok Sabha constituency.

Anna Hazare's fast
PUNE, Aug 12 (UNI) — The "answers", that soldier-turned-social activist Anna Hazare is seeking, eluded the anti-corruption crusader even on the fourth day today of his "self introspection fast" in the temple town of Alandi near here. "I will continue with my fast till I get the answers", Mr Hazare told reporters. Mr Harare has undertaken the 11-day fast "to introspect and seek answers" to rid society of corruption. "corruption has seeped into the society to such an extent that even the judiciary has not been able to escape its tentacles", Mr Hazare said, adding that all he could do for the present was to "swallow his grief".
