SAD promises stability, peace
JALANDHAR, Aug 26 — The Shiromani Akali Dal today sought a mandate for political stability, economic prosperity and social harmony and for total rout of principles and personalities of foreign origin trying to "usurp leadership of the country". The party’s manifesto, released here by the SAD president and Punjab Chief Minister, Mr Parkash Singh Badal.

Plot to kill Vajpayee, Sonia Gandhi
CHANDIGARH, Aug 26 — The Director-General of Haryana Police, Mr A.S. Bhatotia, said here today that three "human bombs", sponsored by Pakistani ISI, were active in the state to liquidate the Prime Minister, Mr Atal Behari Vajpayee, the Union Home Minister, Mr L.K. Advani, the Congress President, Mrs Sonia Gandhi, and certain other top leaders.

New Delhi, Aug 26 — The BJP today stated that it would try to evolve a consensus among its allies on contentious issues like Ayodhya, Article 370 and the common civil code.

  APHC chief put under house arrest
SRINAGAR, Aug 26 — The police here today kept the APHC chairman, Syed Ali Shah Geelani, under house arrest, while several other senior leaders of the APHC were held. The APHC has called for a public meeting at Sher-e-Kashmir Park, after Friday prayer here tomorrow as a part of its anti-election campaign.

80 feared drowned
BANGALORE, Aug 26 — Eighty persons were feared drowned when a private bus fell into an irrigation tank near Uchangidurga in Davanagere district of Karnataka today.
