Lok Sabha passes IRDA Bill
NEW DELHI, Dec 2 — The much awaited Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority (IRDA) Bill was passed by the Lok Sabha today after the Congress, satisfied with the government’s decision to incorporate its suggested amendments, joined hands with the ruling coalition to bulldoze a stiff opposition, including a walk-out, by the Left and other non-Congress parties.

Money-laundering, FEMA Bills passed
NEW DELHI, Dec 2 — The Lok Sabha today passed the Prevention of Money Laundering and the Foreign Exchange Management Bills with Finance Minister Yashwant Sinha asserting that the government would not take risks that would expose the country to unnecessary hardship.

Gamang leaves decision to Sonia
NEW DELHI, Dec 2 — A beleagured Mr Girdhar Gamang today played his last trump card of leaving the decision of his continuation as the Chief Minister to the Congress President, Mrs Sonia Gandhi, amid indications that a change appears imminent.

Shastri sworn in HP Governor
SHIMLA, Dec 2 — Mr Vishnu Kant Shastri was sworn in as Governor of Himachal Pradesh at Raj Bhavan here today. He replaces Mrs V.S. Rama Devi who has been transferred to Karnataka.

Sectt staff not paid salary
CHANDIGARH, Dec 2 — The taste of the resource crunch in Punjab is now being felt by the bureaucracy at the secretariat. None, from the Chief Secretary to the lowest clerk or peon could be paid salary for the month of November which in the directorates and in the districts had been paid either on November 29 or November 30.


Villagers attack dera inmates
Police inaction alleged
DHAKKI SAHIB (Maqsoodran), Dec 2 — A large group of armed villagers this morning attacked the dera of the jailed Baba Darshan Singh of Dhakki Sahib and set several structures on fire in a bid to chase away the Baba’s followers and occupy the dera. At least three persons, all of them inmates of the dera, were injured.
