I am a graduate in veterinary science and animal husbandry. Could you tell me about the job prospects in this field?

Sanjeev Khanna, Ambala Cantt.

A qualified vet has two options: to set up private practice or seek employment in any of the central or state government’s animal husbandry departments or commercial organisations. Recruitment of veterinarians to state services is made through the respective State Public Service Commissions whereas in private sector, they are recruited directly by the organisation.

You can work in rural or urban areas tending to the well-being of farm animals of domestic pets. If employed as an extension officer with the government, the official will mainly work in the areas of educating farmers and villagers on improving the quality of their livestock besides offering advice on managing animal farm. Your other functions could include controlling and eradicating any notifiable diseases among the animals. Usually one such officer is posted at each block-level!

There is also an increasing need for research scholars in academic and research institutions like:

CSIR (Council of Scientific & Research) laboratories

National Dairy Development Board

National Dairy Research Institute

Indian Council for Agricultural Research (ICAR)

National Institute of Immunology (NII)

Defence Research Development Organisation (DRDO)

Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR)

National Institute of Nutrition

Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR)

Central Food Technological Research Institute (CFTRI), Mysore etc.

Veterinary doctors are also employed in the R & D department of pharmaceutical companies where they are involved in the production of vaccines or development of animal feeds and fertilisers.

Vets are also employed by private and state-run veterinary hospitals as well as in the armed forces. The Army Remount and Veterinary Corps, equivalent to the Army Medical Corps, take in trained veterinary doctors as direct recruits. They are entrusted with the care of all animals in the defence forces, including horses, ponies, camels, mules, cattle, and poultry and sniffer dogs for bomb detection. Similarly, there is scope even in the Border Security Force and Indo-Tibetan Border Police.

The dairy sector including poultry farming employ a large number of vets. Breeding of pedigree dogs and race horses in another area where veterinarians can choose to specialise in.

If on the other hand you’d rather focus on the care and protection of wild animals, in captivity as well as in sanctuaries. Zoological parks and wildlife sanctuaries could be the ones to target.

A Bachelor’s degree in Veterinary Science (BVSc) is required to gain formal entry into the field. Eligibility is 10+2 in the science stream with PCB. Most of the teaching and research assignments would require a postgraduate degree followed by a Ph.D in veterinary science and animal husbandry.

USA fails to meet targets
Education targets for the USA, set a decade ago by President Bush, have not been achieved. None of the eight measures of educational progress set in 1989 will be fully reached by the target year of 2000, says a BBC report. The setting of targets was intended as a 10-year campaign to put the USA at the forefront of educational achievement. Among the goals was for the USA to become the “first in the world” in maths and science — but at the end of the decade, 13 year olds were 21st in an international ranking of 40 countries and 10th for science. And in other age groups for maths and science, pupils in the USA continued to lag behind others in the industrialised world. But the National Education Goals Panel reported overall improvements in maths, with particular rise in standards in Michigan, Minnesota, North Carolina, Connecticut and Wisconsin.

Teacher scarcity
Each morning, an estimated 96,000 teachers are marked “absent” in classrooms across the USA. They are out for the usual reasons: illness, personal leave or training. But the task of finding substitute teachers to take their places has become anything but usual, reports USA Today. The economy and demographic shifts have drained the usual pool of substitute teachers, creating a critical scarcity of qualified substitutes throughout the country. Some school districts are so desperate that they now hire people with nothing more than a high school diploma. Louisiana schools ask parents to step in as temporary teachers. Chicago has tried enlisting off-duty police personnel and fire-fighters. School districts in Maine, New Hampshire and Massachusetts have turned to temporary employment agencies to do the job. And, according to several education surveys, more than 90 per cent of the nation’s school districts have trouble finding substitutes. “The main goal is often to get a warm body in there,” says Max Longhurst, an education specialist with Utah State University’s Substitute Teacher Institute, which studies trends and develops programs for substitutes.

Hi-tech kids
According to a Kaiser Family Foundation study, the average kid in the USA spends 5 hours and 29 minutes, seven days a week, watching TV, listening to music or working on a computer at home. Most of that is done in isolation, in bedrooms that are fully media-equipped, with no parental supervision, according to a report in USA Today. The study of more than 3,000 kids, ages 2-18, found that most parents (61 per cent) have no rules about TV watching, even though 65 per cent of kids 8 and older have TVs in their rooms. After TV, music is a dominant force with children (1 hour and 27 minutes per day). Despite widespread access to computers (7 in 10 have one), most spend far less time using it (21 minutes) than watching TV (2 hours and 46 minutes). Reading remains a major part of kids’ lives (82 per cent read for fun each day, about 45 minutes a day on non-homework material.— K.S.B.Top
