Haryana Assembly dissolved

CHANDIGARH, Dec 14 — Setting all speculations at rest, the Haryana Assembly was dissolved today by the Governor, Mr Mahabir Prasad, following a recommendation to this effect made by the state Cabinet. Mr Om Prakash Chautala, who presided over the meeting which started in his office at 3.15 p.m. and lasted nearly two hours, met the Governor after the meeting and submitted the Cabinet proposal to dissolve the Assembly.

Free power in Punjab may go
NEW DELHI, Dec 14 — Free power for farmers could be a thing of the past in Punjab if the state decides to follow suggestions from the Centre to dismantle such populist measures.

Couple ends life after torture
JAIPUR, Dec 14 — A young couple hanged themselves to death after the police tortured the husband for no reason. Before the two committed suicide the husband killed their one-year-old daughter. The heart-rending incident occurred in the state capital on Monday.

UP to follow NDA agenda: PM
Ayodhya issue rocks Lok Sabha
NEW DELHI, Dec 14 — Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee today set at rest the raging controversy on the mandir issue which rocked the Lok Sabha for the past two days clarifying that the BJP-run Uttar Pradesh Government would follow the agenda of the National Democratic Alliance of the central government.

Bathinda DC, SSP shifted
CHANDIGARH, Dec 14 — Taking serious note of the resolution passed by officers of the Bathinda district against a minister, the Punjab Government today transferred both the Deputy Commissioner Mr S.R. Ladhar, and the Senior Superintendent of Police, Mr Harnek Singh Saran, with immediate effect.

SAD meeting stayed
KHARAR, Dec 14 — The Kharar Civil Judge (Junior Division), Mrs Seema Dhillon, today restrained the Shiromani Akali Dal and its President, Mr Parkash Singh Badal, along with other defendants, from holding the Working Committee meeting on December 15. The Civil Judge also issued notice to the defendants for December 17.

Mattoo case: CBI to move HC
NEW DELHI, Dec 14 — The CBI Director has commenced an inquiry to ascertain whether there were any lapses in the agency’s investigation of the Priyadarshini Mattoo rape-and-murder case, particularly whether any attempt was made by anyone to shield the accused, the Lok Sabha was informed today.


Number of patients falls as charges go up
AMRITSAR, Dec 14 — Even as the government has set a target of ‘health for all by 2000’ there has been about 30 per cent fall in the number of patients admitted to government hospitals in the past six months following imposition of exorbitant charges for medicare by the state government.
