SRINAGAR, Dec 15 — Militants attacked an Army camp and a camp of the Special Operations Group (SOG) of the Jammu and Kashmir police in north Kashmir last night killing a Deputy Superintendent of Police and an Army jawan and injuring more than 10 others.

A DSP of the Jammu and Kashmir police Kuldeep Singh, was killed when militants fired rockets at a camp of the SOG at Palhalan near Pattan, in Baramula district last night. Reports said a group of over 20 heavily armed militants attacked the camp at 4.15 a.m. today, killing at least a soldier and injuring several others. The security forces retaliated but there was no damage on the militants’ side. The whole area has been cordoned off by the security forces to flush out the hiding militants, the police said here this evening.

The body of Kuldeep Singh was later flown to Jammu with full police honours. The Minister of State for Home, Mr Mushtaq Ahmad Lone, Inspector General of Police, Kashmir range, bade farewell to the deceased at the airport.

Elsewhere, at least 15 persons, including nine militants, have been killed in separate incidents of militancy in Jammu and Kashmir since yesterday. The security forces also recovered a large quantity of arms and ammunition during searches.

Five militants and three security personnel were killed in an encounter at Krud in Rajouri district of the Jammu region yesterday. Four AK rifles, one UMG and 10 rounds of ammunition were recovered from the site of the encounter.

Two unidentified militants were killed in an encounter with the SOG at Chanyes Gandon in Doda district today. Two AK rifles were recovered from the site of the encounter. The operation was continuing.

Two foreign militants were killed in another encounter with the security forces in the Thimran forest area near Achhabal in Anantnag district. One UMG, with 29 rounds and other ammunition were seized.
