Colombo DIG, 14 others killed
COLOMBO, Dec 18 — Sri Lankan President Chandrika Kumaratunga had a miraculous escape when a powerful bomb exploded, apparently triggered by a LTTE suicide bomber, at an election rally tonight while 25 persons (16, according to AFP and PTI), including Colombo DIG and a retired army major, were killed and more than 100 injured in two blasts here.

50 students, SDM injured
Protesters lathi-charged
ROPAR, Dec 18 — At least 50 students, including girls, were injured in a lathi charge here today while one of them was allegedly hit by a pellet. The police burst tear gas shells to disperse the students and arrested a large number of them. The local SDM, Amarjit Singh Shahi, was also injured in the stone-throwing.

NEW DELHI, Dec 18 — Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Digvijay Singh today met Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee and suggested setting up a unified police force to deal with the Naxalite menace in the state and neighbouring areas.

ROHTAK, Dec 18 — A young married woman was killed and her teenaged sister injured when a youth opened fire at them at their house in the Prem Nagar locality here yesterday. The accused, reported to be a 17-year-old student, was nabbed by residents and handed over to the police.

Pak ready to resolve Kashmir issue
ISLAMABAD, Dec 18 — Pakistan’s military ruler, Gen Pervez Musharraf, said today Islamabad was willing to resolve the Kashmir issue through “peaceful means” if India showed “sincerity” but pledged to continue support to Kashmiri militants.
