Peace at all costs,
says Badal

CHANDIGARH, Feb 4 — Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal said here today that peace would not be allowed to be disturbed in the state at any cost. He said this in the context of the statement made by the Jathedar of Akal Takht, Bhai Ranjit Singh, that the Panth should ensure there was no bloodshed at the time of the tercentenary celebrations like Baisakhi of 1978 when 13 Sikhs were killed by Nirankaris.

AMRITSAR, Feb 4 — The Sikh Gurdwara Judicial Commission today fixed February 25 for hearing of the petition moved by an SGPC member, Mr Sarup Singh Dhesi, against 10 pro-Badal executive members for their disqualification from the SGPC since they have become 'patit'.

NEW DELHI, Feb 4 — Before the start of the second cricket Test between India and Pakistan, the players of both teams were introduced to the Prime Minister, Mr Atal Behari Vajpayee. Later in the day, the Congress president, Mrs Sonia Gandhi, also came to the Ferozeshah Kotla ground to witness the match.

NDC meeting on Feb 19
Construction of 6 lines cleared
NEW DELHI, Feb 4 — The Centre today decided to convene a meeting of the National Development Council on February 19 to finalise the draft Ninth Five-Year-Plan. Apart from finalising the draft Plan, already approved by the Union Cabinet last month, the NDC will also decide on a suitable criteria for allocation of funds under major rural poverty alleviation programmes, Union Information and Broadcasting Minister Pramod Mahajan told mediapersons after a meeting of the Cabinet here.

Jerath ‘got over Rs 70 lakh’ in kickback
CHANDIGARH, Feb 4 — The suspended Chief Engineer of the Union Territory of Chandigarh, Mr K.K. Jerath (now under arrest), allegedly received kickbacks to the tune of over Rs 70 lakh in a period of nearly one and a half years. This allegation is contained in the charge sheet in respect of FIR No. 1 registered by the Vigilance police station last year.
