More aid pours in for martyrs SHIMLA, July 10 A contribution of Rs 28 lakh has been made by the Himachal Pradesh police towards to Chief Minister's Sainik Welfare Fund. A cheque for the amount was presented to the Chief Minister, Mr P.K. Dhumal by the Director-General of Police, Mr T.R. Mahajan, here today. All police personnel have contributed one day's salary towards the fund. Mr Dhumal said he has so far received contributions amounting to Rs 1.35 crore. Many schoolchildren have contributed their pocket money towards the fund. PATIALA: Mr Harish Chander, District Manager, FCI, have given a demand draft for Rs 4.05 lakh to Mr T.P. Singh, Joint Manager, FCI regional office, Punjab to be forwarded to the Prime Minister's Relief Fund. AMRITSAR: The PCMS Association, Amritsar unit, has decided to contribute one day's salary to the Central Welfare Fund for the Kargil heroes. PATHANKOT: Employees of the Soil and Water Conservation Department have donated one day salary to the Army Welfare Fund. Rs 25,000 have been donated by the Morning Club to the Kargil war heroes. SHAHABAD: Mr Tara Singh, a former Parliament member from Kurukshetra, has donated one month's pension towards the Defence Fund for the help of the jawans. Employees of the Shahabad Cooperative Sugar Mill have donated one day's salary towards the fund. Their donations of over Rs 1 lakh would be presented to the Deputy Commissioner, according to the Managing Director of the mill. MALERKOTLA: Employees of the local Municipal Council including the President, Executive Officer and the Municipal Councillors, have contributed one day's salary to the Prime Minister's Relief Fund for the welfare of the families of the martyrs. Mr K.K. Mehta, Principal of the local DAV Senior Secondary School has contributed one month's salary to the Prime Minister's Relief Fund. According to Mr Mehta, the students of the school have also shown their sympathy with the bereaved families of the Kargil martyrs and have been collecting funds for them. SRINAGAR: Members of the Jammu and Kashmir Council of Ministers will donate half a month's salary towards the Chief Minister's Relief Fund, according to official sources. The government employees too would contribute one day's salary towards the fund. GARHSHANKAR: At Mahilpur workers of the Akali Dal, the BJP and local shopkeepers polished shoes of the passersby and collected money for the Kargil martyrs. Similarly, at Garhshankar workers of the Seva Bharti and the BJP also collected funds for the same cause. HAMAD (Ferozepore): The Minister of State for Cooperation and Sainik Welfare, Punjab, Mr Janmeja Singh Sekhon, on behalf of the state government at a simple function held here, about 27 km from Ferozepore, on Saturday presented a cheque of Rs 2 lakh as exgratia to Mrs Mukhtiar Kaur, mother of Surjit Singh, who sacrificed his life in the Kargil sector on July 2. Regarding certain demands raised by the villagers on the occasion, Mr Sekhon asked the Ferozepore Deputy Commissioner, Mr Gurdev Singh Sidhu, to take necessary measures to rename the village government middle school after the Kargil martyr, Surjit Singh. The minister said that he would recommend upgradation of the village school up to senior secondary level and setting up of a focal point in memory of the martyr at Hamad village. While expressing sympathy with the martyr's mother, the minister promised the family another grant of Rs 5 lakh on behalf of the Punjab Government for the construction of a house. PATIALA: The Bank of Punjab has taken the initiative to mobilise contributions from the public for the Army Central Welfare Fund for the welfare of families of soldiers affected in the Kargil crisis through its network of 50 branches across India in Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Maharashtra and Chandigarh. A bank press note said as a humble contribution towards this noble cause the entire staff of the Bank of Punjab branch at The Mall here had donated two days' salary towards this fund. In a separate note, PSEB Officers (Accounts) Association announced that every officer of accounts cadre would donate one day's basic pay for the welfare of families of Army personnel who had sacrificed their lives in the Kargil conflict. It was resolved that the amount would be deducted from the pay and paid to the fund instituted by the Chief Minister. JAMMU: The Bishop, Jammu and Kashmir diocese, Dr Peter Celesine, on Friday presented a cheque of Rs 1 lakh to the Chief Minister, Dr Farooq Abdullah, for the jawans fighting in the Kargil sector and displaced people on border areas. Father Jose Vadakel, priest in charge St Catholic Church, Srinagar, Mr S. Peter, Chairman of the J&K State Handloom Development Corporation, and sisters of Missionaries of Charity were also present at the occasion. Expressing solidarity of the Catholic population with the armed forces and assuring support to the displaced persons in the wake of the Kargil incursion, the Bishop complimented the jawans and officers for fighting gallantly under extreme conditions and making sacrifices for the sake of the country. MALERKOTLA: S.S. Jain Tapa Baradari, Malerkotla has contributed Rs 51,000 to the Prime Minister's Relief Fund for the welfare of the families of those who had laid down their lives in Kargil while fighting the Pakistani intruders, according to Mr Jaswant Rai Jain, treasurer of the baradari. He said the draft had been sent to the Prime Minister. Meanwhile, D.L.B. Courier Service has decided to provide free courier service in case of the bundles containing relief funds draft and other articles for the welfare of families of the Kargil martyrs. This free service would be provided at Malerkotla by its agent K.K. Agency. SONEPAT: The Haryana State Pharmacists Association on Saturday contributed Rs 51,000 towards the Chief Minister's War Heroes Relief Fund and also announced that its members would also donate their one day's salary towards this fund in addition to the above-mentioned contribution. Mr Mehtab Singh Dahiya, general secretary of the state unit of the association, told mediapersons here on Saturday the members of the association were ready to go to the Kargil front for rendering medical help to the injured jawans. The association had already brought this to the notice of the state government. Teachers and students of the Dayananda Modern High School, Model Town, here have raised Rs 5,400 for contribution towards the National Defence Fund. Ms Urmila Kapoor, Headmistress of the school, told mediapersons here the cheque of this amount had been sent to the Prime Minister's Office by the school authorities. Officers and employees of the Sonepat municipal Council have donated their one day's salary towards the Chief Minister's War Heroes Relief Fund. Similarly, the officers and staff of the WJC Command Lining Division have donated their one day's salary towards the Chief Minister's War Heroes Relief Fund. Teachers and the staff of DAV Multipurpose Public School raised Rs 10,000 from people by taking out a procession here on Friday. Ms Saraswati Arya, Principal of the school, told mediapersons here on Saturday the institution would contribute Rs 50,000 towards the National Defence Fund through the Prime Minister's Office. The Sarv Karamchari Sangh, Haryana, on Saturday gave a call to its members to contribute their one day's salary towards the Chief Minister's War Heroes Relief Fund. BHIWANI: The Block Education Officer of Charkhi Dadri contributed Rs 1,02,850 for the Kargil martyrs' families while the residents of Bigowa village donated Rs 55,000. The sum was handed over to Mr Jaibir Singh Arya, SDM, on Friday.
KURUKSHETRA: The Vice-Chancellor of Kurukshetra University, Dr M.L. Ranga, presented a cheque of Rs 5,73,591 to the Deputy Commissioner, Mr S.N. Roy, towards the Haryana Chief Minister's War Heroes Relief Fund here on Saturday. The cheque includes the amount of one week's salary of the Vice-Chancellor besides one day's salary of Kurukshetra University teaching and non-teaching employees. The cheque was handed over to the Deputy Commissioner at a simple function organised in the university guest house here on Saturday. The Vice-Chancellor said the university had decided on various steps for the welfare of children and families of the jawans and officers killed in the Kargil and Dras sectors. These steps included providing free education by the university, its affiliated colleges and the Directorate of Correspondence Courses to the children of war heroes who had laid down their lives for the nation. Free books would also be provided by the university to such students. Economic help in the form of scholarships would also be provided. Dr Ranga further said preference would be given to such students at the time of admission in the university and even additional seats would be created for this purpose. He also disclosed that a blood donation camp would be organised shortly in which 1,000 units of blood would be donated by the students, teachers and non-teaching employees of the university. MANALI: Employees serving in the Manali Nagar Panchayat have presented a draft of Rs 8,100 for the Chief Minister's Soldier Relief Fund to the local MLA, Mr Chander Sen Thakur. This comprises one day's salary of the nagar panchayat employees. Besides, residents of new Manali (Aleo village) have also presented a draft worth Rs 10,000 to the Deputy Commissioner, Mr Ashwani Kapoor, for the CM's Soldier Welfare Fund. SHIMLA: The Governor, Ms V.S. Rama Devi, has contributed Rs 15,000 towards the Chief Minister's Sainik Welfare Fund. Officers and staff of Raj Bhavan made a contribution of Rs 10,000 for the fund. A cheque of Rs 25,000 on this account was presented to the Chief Minister, Mr Prem Kumar Dhumal, by the Secretary of the Governor, Mr Jiwanand Jiwan. The staff of the Government College for Boys, Sanjauli, has contributed Rs 68,550 for the fund. AMBALA: The district administration has takes serious note of the collection of donations by certain people unauthorisedly for the Kargil martyrs. The Deputy Commissioner, Ms Navraj Sandhu, has issued directions to the public to seek prior permission in this regard. Talking to this correspondent, she said people had been told to contribute funds only to those who had official recognition. She said clubs, unions and institutions were, however, allowed to seek donations from their members. She disclosed that the administration had received some reports that some people were engaged in collection in the name of martyrs. Meanwhile, the district
police swung into action when it received information
that some people were collecting money in the name of
Kargil martyrs. The police seized about Rs 28,000. Later,
the amount was sent to the Chief Minister's Relief Fund. |
