BATHINDA
Attack condemned:
The Punjab State Electricity Board Engineers Association of Guru Nanak Dev Thermal Plant has condemned the "murderous attack" on Mr Kartar Singh Brar, Executive Engineer, and Mr Fakir Chand Bansal and Mr Sukhdev Singh, junior engineers, by the owner of a local hotel on October 26. In a press note issued here on Monday, the association said the engineers were attacked while on duty. The association has demanded strict action against the guilty and urged the state government to make adequate security arrangements for employees.

GARHSHANKAR
Medical camp:
Guru Nanak Mission Hospital, Dhahan Kaleran, organised a free medical camp at Birampur village. A large number of patients were examined by specialists and medicines were distributed among them.

Ornaments looted: Two scooter-borne miscreants looted some cash and ornaments at gunpoint from Kuldeep Kaur and Paramjit Kaur of Parsowal village. The women were coming to Parsowal village from Bassi Kalan village.

KAPURTHALA
City hall:
The city hall built by the local Improvement Trust at a cost of Rs 10 lakh was opened to the public at the Improvement Trust Colony on Monday. Mr N.K. Arora, Principal Secretary, Local Bodies Department, inaugurated it. Mr V.K. Singh, Deputy Commissioner, and Mr S.S. Bains, Additional Deputy Commissioner, were also present on the occasion.

Dharnas: The Bahujan Samaj Party has decided to stage dharnas in the state in protest against the notification abolishing the quota of reservation of Scheduled Caste persons in government jobs. This was stated by Mr Tarsem Daula, Senior Vice-President of the district unit of the party.

LUDHIANA
Teachers' demand:
The local unit of the Government School Teachers Union has demanded the removal of anomalies in the grades of teachers, implementation of new grades as recommended by the Chattopadhya Commission and retaining the post of Head Teacher in primary schools.

MOGA
Garbage:
Several associations, including the Shopkeepers and the Halwais Associations, of this town on Tuesday appealed to the local authorities, including the President of the Moga Municipal Committee and the Deputy Commissioner, to make immediate arrangements for the removal of stagnant water and heaps of garbage "littered at various places" of the town for the past several months. The associations said the garbage and stagnant water had started causing health problems.

Run over: A disabled man was killed on Monday when he was run over by a passenger train coming from Ludhiana near the Moga railway station. He was crossing the railway track when the mishap took place. He was identified as Amarjit Singh of this town. The body has been sent for a post-mortem.

PATHANKOT
Eye camp:
At an eye operation camp organised at Shri Guru Karshan Ashram, Badhroa, on Tuesday, 25 cataract operations were performed by eye specialists Dr Arun Khera, Dr S.K Saini and Dr Vijay Nijhavan. Spectacles, blankets and shoes were given free of cost to patients by the ashram authorities.

PHAGWARA
Bank branch:
HDFC bank has opened its fully computerised branch here on Tuesday. This hi-tech branch will provide 24-hour automated teller machine (ATM) and phone banking facilities, besides the super saver account facility, bank sources said on Wednesday. The branch is the fifth in the state and 60th in the country.

Dental fortnight: Twenty dentures will be provided free of cost and hundreds of dental patients will be examined and imparted dental health care education in the local civil hospital during the statewide dental fortnight that was launched on Tuesday, Dr Paramjeet Singh Thind, Chief Medical Officer (Dental), Phagwara, said on Wednesday.

PHILLAUR
Shot at:
Lashman Singh was shot at and wounded by two armed miscreants at Rurrka Kalan village in Phillaur subdivision on Monday. He was going to a friend's house. The miscreants fled after committing the crime. Lashman Singh was admitted to the civil hospital with bullet injuries on the chest. A case has been registered.

ROPAR
DRDA union:
The following have been elected office-bearers of the Ropar unit of the Punjab State District Rural Development Agencies (DRDA) Employees Union: president — Mr Jagan Nath Mohal; general secretary — Mr Darshan Kumar; and treasurer — Mr Paramjit Singh.

SAMRALA
Orientation camp:
A seven-day special orientation camp of primary teachers, which was organised under the guidance of Mrs Usha Sidhu, DEO (S), Ludhiana, concluded here on Tuesday at the local Government Senior Secondary School. As many as 54 teachers participated in the seminar.

SANGRUR
Branch inaugurated:
Mr R.S Nanda, General Manager, of State Bank of Patiala, inaugurated the computerised branch of the State Bank of Patiala at a function held here on Tuesday.

KHARAR
Judicial remand:
Mr Sanjay Agnihotri, Judicial Magistrate of Kharar on Wednesday remanded one Raginder Singh, SDO (telephones) of SAS Nagar, in judicial custody till November 17. He was arrested by the Punjab Vigilance Department on Tuesday while accepting a bribe of Rs 1,000 from Mr Gurdip Singh. Mr B.S. Sahota, Assistant Public Prosecutor, and Mr Zora Singh Brar, Vigilance Inspector appeared on behalf of the state in the court on Wednesday.

FATEHABAD
BJP office-bearers:
The district unit President of the BJP, Dr Atam Parkash Mehta, has nominated some new office-bearers to the party. According to a press note issued by the party, Mr Sat Paul Jindal (Rattia) and Mr Om Parkash Singla (Tohana) have been nominated Vice-Presidents. Mr Rajinder Kumar Bhatia has been nominated Secretary while Mr Prem Paul Modi and Mr Gobind Kakkar (Rattia) will be members of the district executive. Mr H S Garg will be the President of the Bhuna Mandal unit of the BJP while Mr Shikhir Chand will be the Vice-President.

KAITHAL
Paddy:
The arrival of paddy in 28 mandis and purchase centres of the district has touched 1,55,910 metric tonnes as against the 1,38,425 metric tonnes during the corresponding period last year. This was disclosed by the Deputy Commissioner, Mr Mahaveer Singh.

SONEPAT
Charter Day:
The Rotary Club here organised a function in connection with the Charter Day on Tuesday evening. As many as eight former presidents of the club were honoured on the occasion. A cultural programme was also organised.

Resentment: Resentment prevails among the unemployed JBT teachers against their non-appointment even after selection by the state government. They alleged that all their complaints made to the Chief Minister in this regard had fallen on deaf ears.top

BILASPUR
Health camps:
As many as 17 special camps would be organised by the Department of Health and Family Welfare in the district at various centres under the Maternity and Child Health Protection campaign during the month. This was disclosed by the Chief Medical Officer, Dr M.L. Mahajan, here on Tuesday.

KANGRA
Body found:
The police found the body of a 55-year-old man near Dard village on Tuesday. The body has been identified as that of Bhagwan Dass of the same village. The body has been sent for a post-mortem.

SHIMLA
Office-bearers:
Ram Kumar of Bhatoli College in Una has been unanimously elected president of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP). Kamal Nain of Himachal Pradesh University has been elected state secretary. The other office-bearers are: vice-presidents — Inder Dev, Umesh Moudgil and Satish Bhardwaj; and treasurer — Lokesh Sood.

SOLAN
Liquor seized:
The Kandaghat police seized 2,400 pouches of country liquor from a van during a special nakabandi near Chail Chowk on the Kalka-Shimla National Highway on Monday. The SP, Mr Rakesh Aggarwal, said the van was on its way from Chandigarh to Shimla. Pawan Kumar of Panchkula, Lokendra Kumar of Mani Majra and Ajay Bhatti of Vikas Nagar (Shimla) have been arrested under Sections 61, 1 and 14 of the Excise Act in this regard.
