Vishal records upset win PUNE, Nov 3 (UNI) Wild carder Vishal Uppal of India created a flutter accounting for fifth seeded Per Thornadtson of Sweden in straight sets 6-4, 7-5 and along with his three other countrymen Prahlad Srinath, Kirtane cousins Nitin and Sandeep sailed into the last eight stage of the mens singles of the ITF Satellite Tennis Circuit third leg being played at the synthetic courts of the Deccan Gymkhana here today. Third seeded Srinath made a remarkable recovery and showed the exit door to Wild card holder Mustfa Ghouse of India also in straight sets 7-5, 6-2. Sixth seed Sandeep overcame a stiff resistence from Balazs Veress of Hungary in a tight match at 7-5, 5-7, 7-6, (7-3) while Nitin brought Vijay Kanan of India 7-6, (7-2) 6-4, into submission. The third leg being hosted by the Maharashtra State Lawn Tennis Association (MSLTA) proved lucky for him as the 22-year-old Uppal could make the quarters for the first time. The lanky Delhi-based Uppal packed a lot of power in his first serve which clicked as he fired a total of 13 aces to outdone the strongly built Swede. Playing a tactical game the Indian did not allow Thonardtson to settle down.Besides serving well he produced excellent ground strokes and broke the rival in the third game to go up 2-1. The rivals then moved with Serve. Uppal then broke the swede in the sixth game and went on to wrap up the set 6-4, firing five aces. In the second set Thornadtson who was finding problems with his first serve as well has controlling his ground strokes dropped his serve in the very first game but managed to break the India in the second. The Swede tightened up his game to some extent but was broken in the sixth. He broke back in the seventh but was of no avail. Uppal broke Thornadtson in the 11th game to romp home 7-5 after a tussle lasting 90 minutes. The Delhi youngster had eight ace in the second set. Thornadtson double faulted on six occasion before bowling out. Uppal takes on Indian Davis Cupper and second leg victor Prahlad Srinath in the quarters tomorrow, Nitin meets Radim Zitko of Czech Repblic while Sandeep locks horns with Thomas Messer of Germany in the other quarterfinal ties. The Sandeep versus Veress was a gruelling tussle lasting two hours and 38 minutes. In a baseline duel the local hero Sandeep broke Veress in the second game to lead 2-1 and holding his serve went up 3-1. Sandeep dropped his serve as the rival were level at 5-all. He, however, broke the Hungarian in the 11th game with a forehand down the line pass to clinch the opening set 7-5. Veress a came back strongly in the second set and took a 3-0 lead breaking the Indian in the very first game. Sandeep, however, fought back and made it 4-4. Veress, who produced some fluent forehand cross court winners, broke Sandeep in the 12th game to bag the set 7-5 and restore parity. The third set went with serve till the 10th game as the rivals were level at 5-5. Sandeep broke in the 11th but was broken back in the 12th to force the tie breaker. Sandeep who exhibited confidence never relaxed and made the issue safe winning 7-3. Wild carder Mustafa Ghouse raised a vision of toppling the applecart of Indian Davis Cuper Srinath taking a 5-3 lead in the opening set. But that was as far he could go. Srinath reeled off four games in a row to claim the set 7-5. Srinath bounced back into the top gear broke the rival in the third and the fifth games to take a commanding 5-1 lead and polished off the set 6-2 in a tussle lasting for one hour 15 minutes. Ghouse could take only two points before bowing out. The following are the

Sampras recovers to down Clavet PARIS, Nov 3 (DPA) Pete Sampras made a return to tennis two months after a back injury, recovering to defeat Spains Francisco Clavet 4- 6, 6-3, 7-6 (7-4) in a contest that concluded early this morning at the $ 2.55 million Paris Open. Sampras, seeded third, had to wait for much of the evening to play as an overly ambitious schedule fell farther and farther behind at the Bercy Arena. By 8 p.m., only half of six centre court matches had been completed. Sampras finally got on court around 11 p.m. And took more than two hours to secure victory into the third round after an opening bye given to all seeds at the last Mercedes Super 9 of the season. Sampras has not played since August 20, when he quit in Indianapolis with a hip flexor problem. Just over a week later, he was felled by a herniated disc in his back the day before the start of the US Open. The 28-year-old American stands fourth in the race to the year-end championships in Hanover, but will need a miracle to finish year-end number 1 for a seventh straight year. The 1999 top honours are all but certain to go to double 1999 Grand Slam champion Andre Agassi, playing in Paris for the first time since his triumph on clay at Roland Garros in June. It was a question if I would play at all this year, said Sampras. But I felt better and wanted to play again. I was rusty and unsure coming in. Ive been practising well, but its different in a match. I tried not to worry that Ive not played in a while. In other night matches, two seeds advanced while one, number 5 Gustavo Kuerten, fell. Nicolas Lapentti, the number 11 from Ecuador defeated Fabrice Santoro of France, 6-4, 7-6 (7-5). That result left 15th-seeded Cedric Pioline as the last home player standing after beating French Open finalist Andrei Medvedev of the Ukraine, 6-3, 6-4. Kuerten became the weeks first upset victim, losing to Russian Marat Safin 7-6 (7-4), 3-6, 7-6 (7-4). Day 2 play at the Bercy Arena moved with the speed of the ice age as things backed up by two to three hours due to overly long three-set struggles. French ranks were reduced by two more players. Hollands Sjeng Schalken knocked out Arnaud Clement 7-6 (7-4), 4-6, 7-6 (7-2) while unseeded Thomas Enqvist of Sweden accounted for Sebastien Grosjean 3-6, 6-4, 7-6 (7-5). World number 9 Enqvist managed to avoid embarrassment 48 hours after taking the Mercedes Super 9 crown in Stuttgart. It was a narrow escape for the Swede, who was able to convert only one of nine break point chances. For the second week in succession, Swedens Magnus Larsson was forced to pull out. His exit with a stiff neck came just hours before his first round match. The Hanover participation of Nicolas Kiefer hung in the balance on Tuesday after the German seventh seed was forced to withdraw due to an ankle injury suffered a week ago. Kiefer, ranked a career-high seventh on the ATP Tour and the leading German contender for a finale place, flew home for more treatment. His participation in next weeks event in Moscow the last week of the season remains in doubt. Im very
excited by the thought of playing in Hanover because it
is in my hometown, Kiefer said. The
ankle (injured last week in Stuttgart) still hurts if I
run, it doesnt make sense to play if Im not
100 per cent fit. |
FIH okays Pak participation CHANDIGARH, Oct 3 In effort to support the promotion of hockey in the subcontinent and Asia, the FIH Council has agreed in principle to include both the Pakistan mens team and the Korean womens team in the 2000 editions of the Champions Trophy being staged in May/June in Amstelveen, the Netherlands, making for a seven-team field for both events. Both Pakistan and Korea finished sixth in the 1999 Champions Trophy held in Brisbane, Australia, and had therefore not qualified for the 2000 event. However, whether the decision can actually be implemented remains to be seen. The FIH Council has acknowledged that it could only be accomplished if the move did not place undue financial and administrative hardships on the host country, the Netherlands, and on the participating teams. The implications of the seven-team field include increased playing days, increased financial burden, revamping of the match schedule and possible difficulties with ticketing. Meanwhile, Eric Donegani of Canada and Annabel Ess of Singapore have been named as the technical delegates, respectively, for the mens and womens hockey tournaments of the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games. It is expected that a number of technical officials will be named by January, with the remainder, mainly umpires, to be named once the qualifying tournaments are complete and the full field of Olympic participants is known. The pools for the mens and womens qualifying tournaments for the Olympic Games, taking place respectively in Osaka (Japan) and Milton keynes (England) in March 2000, were also approved by the FIH council during its meeting on October 29. The pools are: Mens qualifying tournament (Osaka March 9-20, 2000). Pool A: Belgium, Great Britain, Japan, Korea, New Zealand, Poland Pool B: Argentina, Belarus, Malaysia, Pakistan, Spain, Switzerland. Womens qualifying tournament (Milton Keynes, England, March 24 to April 2000). Pool A: Germany, India, Ireland, Spain, USA. Pool B: China, Great Britain, Japan, New Zealand, Russia. Six mens teams and five womens teams from the qualifying events will earn a spot at the Sydney Olympic Games. They will join the six mens teams and five womens teams already qualified for Sydney. The teams that have already qualified for the Sydney Olympic Games are: Mens: South Africa (winners at the mens hockey tournament in the 7th All-Africa Games); Australia (host country and also winner at the 2nd Oceania Cup); Canada (winners at the mens hockey tournament in the 13th Pan American Games); Germany (winners at the eighth European National Cup); India (winners at the mens hockey tournament in the 13th Asian Games) and the Netherlands (Olympic champions in Atlanta - 1996). Womens South Africa, Argentina, Australia, Korea, and the Netherlands. The FIH council also
confirmed the following host countries for upcoming FIH
world-level events the Netherlands -9th womens
Champions Trophy, 2001; England -25th mens
Champions Trophy and 11th Womens Champions Trophy,
2003 (joint event); Zimbabwe - 2nd mens and
womens Champions Challenge (joint event). A host
for the 2001 womens World Cup qualifier is yet to
be determined. |
Dalal slams unbeaten ton in drawn match NEW DELHI, Nov 3 (UNI) Haryana star Sanjay Dalal (107) cracked unbeaten century and his unbroken sixth-wicket stand of 115-run with Ajay Ratra (61) earned a fighting draw against Delhi on the last day of the North Zone Ranji Trophy four-day match at the Ferozshah Kotla ground here today. With no result in sight, Delhi skipper Ajay Sharma folded the game well before completing the 20-mandatory over quota as his bowlers failed to skittle the visitors out within the 304-run first innings lead. Delhi got five points while Haryana had to be content with three points. When the stumps were drawn, Haryana were 346 for five in the second innings with Dalal and Ratra remained unseparated. Earlier, resuming at 90 for two in the morning, the visiting team received a jolt when medium-pacer Amit Bhandari trapped seasoned campaigner Amarjeet Kaypee(18) leg before wicket in a total of 97. Ten runs later, Jasvir Singh (47) was caught by Vijay Dahiya off Ashish Nehra. With the team score reading 107 for four, Haryana once looked to surrender the game but new batsmen Rajesh Puri and Sanjay Dalal with their dogged approach stayed on the wicket to undo further damage. They put up 124 for the fifth wicket before Puri was declared lbw off Nehra with his individual 66. Dalal along with Ajay Ratra continued to fight the battle with firm resolution and they never allowed bowlers to dominate them. Dalal hit his century with the help of ten boundaries whereas Ratra completed his half-century in style, hitting a boundary off Sharma. With their cricketing intelligence and composure, both frustrated the Delhi attack and forced the draw. Bhandari and Nehra claimed two scalps while Chopra took one wicket. Akhtars chucking row ends BRISBANE, Nov 3 (AFP) Australian Cricket Board (ACB) chief executive Malcolm Speed ended the Shoaib Akhtar chucking affair with a brief telephone call to Pakistani manager Yawar Saeed today. A 20-minute video tape of Akhtars action sent by umpires Ross Emerson and Terry Prue arrived in the ACBs morning mail but Speed told Yawar the matter could go no further. The match in question, Western Australia versus Pakistan at Perth last Wednesday, was not sanctioned by the International Cricket Council (ICC) so there was no official referee. The fact that Emerson and Prue failed to query Akhtars action in their match report, only becoming suspicious while watching television highlights the next day, meant the ACB was unable to involve the ICCs nine-man throwing committee. Malcolm Speed told me he had received the tape and he had watched it, Yawar said. He told me the tape had no official status and as far as he and I are concerned, it is all over now and we can look forward to a great Test series. Australias new coach John Buchanan was unhappy the issue had been raised. I think it does more of a disservice to cricket than anything else, he said. It certainly
disturbs the individual no matter who it is, Im
sure (Muttiah) Muralitharan would say the same
thing, he said referring to the Sri Lankan spinner,
whose action has been under intense scrutiny for a number
of years, particularly in Australia. |
Punjab cops move into semis NABHA (Patiala), Nov 3 Punjab Police humbled last years runners up Fine Switchgear, Phagwara, 2-0 to become the first team to make the last four grade in the All-India Gurdarshan Memorial Football Tournament played at the Ripudaman College grounds here today. In the second match Patiala, Police managed to overcome some anxious moments to upset the applecart of Youngsters Club, Chandigarh, 1-0 to enter the quarterfinals. Punjab Police could easily have been a goal up in the opening minutes of the match but for the brilliance of the Phagwara goalkeeper Sukhraj Singh who dived full length to his left to punch out a stinging shot taken from close range by the cops medio Kamaljit Singh. The cops had enough weapons in their armoury, not only to keep in check the marauding Phagwara forwards, but also to make repeated forays into the rival territory. A change in the cops strategy after the breather ensured that their attack carried more sting in which Paramjit and linkman Jatinder stood out. Minutes into the second half cops forward Balbir found himself in front of an empty goal mouth but in his anxiety to score before a defender closes on him made him kick the ball high and wide. Minutes later he was in action again when he weaved his way past two defenders to give a defence splitting pass to substitute Parmajit Singh who elbowed his way past another defender to slot the ball home making it 1-0 for the cops. At the fag end of regulation time Phagwara defender Mohan Pal handled the ball in the penalty area and the resultant spot kick was neatly converted by Satnam Singh who sent the rival goalkeeper the wrong way to make it a comfortable 2-0 for Punjab Police. In the second match of
the day, once the midfield duo of Bahadur and Rajesh
Kumar of Patiala Police settled into a groove it was
almost a hapless situation for the Chandigarh youngsters.
Half back Rajesh of the cops team bulldozed his way in
the danger area and unleashed a powerful grounder which
beat the Chandigarh goal tender all ends up. This
solitary goal lead proved to be enough for Patiala Police
to cruise into the last eight. |

Ntinis acquittal sparks outcry JOHANNESBURG, Nov 3 (PTI) The acquittal of South Africas first black Test cricketer, Makhaya Ntini, on rape charges has sparked an outcry in the country, with womens organisations calling for a civil case against him. Anti-rape and womens groups say they are outraged and shocked at the decision of the appeals court in Grahamstown, Eastern Cape, setting aside Ntinis rape conviction by an East London Regional Court. We have no
alternative but to seek other means of trying to obtain
justice and relief for the woman, said Gabrielle le
Roux, a spokesperson for the Womens Media
Organisation. |
England notch up first win JOHANNESBURG, Nov 3 (AFP) Nasser Hussains England chalked up the first win of their tour of South Africa when they beat Easterns by 19 runs in a 50-over friendly match at Willowmoore Park in Benoni, east of Johannesburg, yesterday. Sent in to bat, the tourists posted a reasonable 234-9 and were able to restrict the inexperienced local line-up to 215-7. But beating the likes of first class fledglings Easterns by such a narrow margin was hardly impressive. Most of the England
batsmen looked more at ease than they had when they lost
to a Nicky Oppenheimer XI on Monday, but in the end their
collective harvest of 234 was somewhat flattering. |
School games at Moga, Patiala CHANDIGARH , Nov 3 Punjab will host national school games at Moga and Patiala simultaneously from November 16 to 21, according to the School Games Federation of India secretary general Pritam Singh Chhabra, who took over recently. He said efforts were on to conduct the games in all disciplines. Punjab would also host Asian school hockey championship in September, 2000. The SGFI will hold the Asian hockey championship next September in Punjab, Mr Chhabra talking to mediapersons said despite hurdles like absence of the previous relevant record, and the financial crunch, the association had been striving hard to keep the school sports alive. He said the Indian school tennis team for the Asian school tennis championship hosted by Asian School Sports Federation at Jakarta in September this year got clearance in a short period of time. The players gave a superb performance and Sunil Kumar won the title in individual event. The camps for the same were arranged at NIS Patiala and RK Tennis Stadium, Delhi, before the teams departure. A few sport disciplines were not organised last year as no state came forward to host the same. But this year all these games would be conducted, said Mr Chhabra, adding that the under-17 age group, discontinued last year, had been restarted. Mr Chhabra said a few new games such as the under 11 event in skating had been started. Skating is getting popular in many parts of the country. He further told the
national school games for the primary children was high
on the agenda of the SGFI which was aiming at grooming
the budding youngsters. |
