70 killed in bus crash
LAGOS, Nov 3 (Reuters) — At least 70 persons died in a bus crash in central Nigeria, a local newspaper said today. "The accident, which involved two luxury buses in a head-on collision, left may of the bodies mutilated beyond recognition". The Independent Champion newspaper said in its report on the crash yesterday. The paper quoted a survivor at the crash scene on the Abuja-Okene north-south highway as saying the headlights failed in the bus he was travelling in before it crashed into the other, oncoming bus.

Information kiosks
NEW DELHI, Nov 3 (PTI) — Travellers would soon be able to get details about accommodation arrangements and transport bookings at proposed tourist information outlets (kiosks) at international airports, bus terminals and important places in metropolitan cities, Tourism Minister Uma Bharati said at a seminar on the role of information technology (IT) in tourism here today. Terming IT as the most useful factor for tourism, the minister appealed to the industry to set up a IT consultancy apex body for tourism.

Father hangs sons
HYDERABAD, Nov 3 (UNI) — Unable to cope with mounting debts, a man hanged his two sons to death at Bukkarayasamudram village in Ananthapur district of Andhra Pradesh yesterday. The police here said Veeraiah, a money lender, killed his two sons Prem Nath (5) and Prem Kumar (3), as he was finding it difficult to run the family following huge losses in the business. His wife was away at the time of the incident.

Rubin may quit
WASHINGTON, Nov 3 (AFP) — US State Department spokesman James Rubin may resign early next year to be closer to his expectant wife, The New York Times said today. Although Rubin, 39, has not given Secretary of State Madeleine Albright a precise date for his departure, he did suggest it could come next spring, administration officials and friends of Tubin told the daily. His wife, is expecting a baby in May, the daily said.

Harshad's kin
NEW DELHI, Nov 3 (UNI) — The Supreme Court today admitted an appeal by the CBI against an order of the special court in Mumbai discharging Ashwin Mehta, brother of Harshad Mehta, from the multi-crore securities scam. The appeal was admitted by a Division Bench comprising Mr Justice B.N. Kirpal and Mr Justice Santosh Hegde.

Border clash
DHAKA, Nov 3 (AP) — Bangladesh and Indian border troops exchanged fire after two Indian policemen were detained for alleged illegal crossing of the border while chasing smugglers, an official said today. No casualties were reported during the intermittent shooting on Monday and Tuesday along the Chanpur frontier in Sunamganj district, 175 km northeast of Dhaka, a Bangladesh border commander said.

Russian missile
MOSCOW, Nov 3 (DPA) — The Russian military has punctuated the continuing dispute over plans in Washington to develop a national missile defence system by testing an existing interception weapon of its own, news reports said today. In the first such test in six years, the Russian missile intercepted another at a test range in Kazakhstan yesterday, Itar-Tass news agency reported.

50 houses gutted
SRINAGAR, Nov 3 (UNI) — About 50 houses and other structures were gutted and number of animals were burnt alive in a devastating fire at Ganaiyee Mohalla in the frontier district of Kupwara late yesterday. Official sources stated that the fire broke out in a house and immediately spread to nearby houses. Twenty houses, 18 kothars and 10 cow sheds were reduced to ashes before fire tenders could reach there.

Pvt Secy to PM
NEW DELHI, Nov 3 (TNS) — Mr V. Anandarajan, an Indian Revenue Service officer, has assumed charge as Private Secretary to the Prime Minister. Mr Anandarajan takes over from Mr Shakti Sinha, who has joined as Adviser to the Executive Director of the World Bank. Mr Anandarajan, a product of Delhi University, had earlier served as Additional Private Secretary.

Indian Haj quota
NEW DELHI, Nov 3 (TNS) — Saudi Arabia has agreed to increase the Indian Haj quota from 91,000 Indian pilgrims to 120,000, a press note of the Ministry of External Affairs said here today. The Saudi decision was conveyed today during a meeting between the visiting Secretary (East) of the Ministry of External Affairs, Mr Nareshwar Dayal,who was accompanied by the Chairman of the Indian Haj Committee, Mr Tanveer Ahmed, and the leader of the Saudi delegation, Mr Iyad bin Amin Madani in Jeddah, the release said.
