HC quashes Lok Pal's appointment
CHANDIGARH, Nov 4 — The Punjab and Haryana High Court today set aside the appointment of Justice Harbans Singh Rai as Punjab Lok Pal. Pronouncing the judgement this afternoon, Mr Justice G.S. Singhvi and Mr Justice Mehtab Singh Gill said: "The appointment of Justice Harbans Singh Rai as Lok Pal is declared ultra vires to Section 4 of the Punjab Lok Pal Act and as such it is quashed."

2 PRO attackers killed in encounter
SRINAGAR, Nov 4 — Blood stains on the floor and red spots on papers inside the office of the Defence Public Relations Office are all that remains after last evening's attack by militants on the office and the adjacent Cantonment Board building in which 6 Army men were killed. Two of the 3 attackers were later killed in the subsequent encounter, which continued until 4.30 in the morning. The PRO building was damaged in the attack and the board building gutted.

Church rejects VHP demand
NEW DELHI, Nov 4 — The Catholic Church today rejected the VHP demand for an apology from the Pope stating that the Church was not involved in atrocities on Hindus in Goa and other parts of the country during Portuguese rule in the 16th century.

Warrants against Quattrocchi
NEW DELHI, Nov 4 — A CBI court today issued non-bailable arrest warrants against Italian businessman Ottavio Quattrocchi and summons to former Defence Secretary S K Bhatnagar, Win Chaddha and two others in the Rs 64 crore Bofors kickbacks case.
Taking cognisance of the CBI charge sheet and the supporting documents in the case, Special Judge Ajit Bharihoke said: "In my opinion there is sufficient prima facie material on record to proceed against the accused.’’

Robbers loot school, assault nuns
PHILLAUR, Nov 4 — Six armed men with muffled faces looted Rs 1.25 lakh and some gold ornaments from teachers of St Joseph's Convent School here in the residential complex of the school late last night. One school teacher, Sister Valentine, was injured in the attack when she tried to resist.
