55 killed as bus falls
into gorge

KATHUA, Nov 6 At
least 55 persons were killed when a bus (JKR 8725)
overloaded with passengers fell into a deep gorge at
Jandrali village on the Bani-Basohali road today.
According to a
preliminary report, 21 persons died on the spot. Thirty
seriously injured were admitted to the sub-district
hospital, Basohali, district hospital, Kathua and GMC,
Jammu. Four of the deceased identified are Mr
Lalit Kumar, Ravi Kumar, Mohammed Riaz and Mohammed Diu,
both constables of the Jammu and Kashmir police.
The Deputy Commissioner
Kathua Chaman Lal the SSP, the MLA from Basohali Mr Lal
Singh rushed to the spot with medical team.
The local SHO said 55
bodies had been recovered so far. The toll was expected
to mount, he said.
There was resentment
over the delay in relief operations on the part of the
civic authorities.
