10 Pakistani soldiers killed in Uri

NEW DELHI, Nov 9 (UNI) — The Pakistani army today attacked an Indian post, Faulad, in the Uri sector in Jammu and Kashmir between 6.30 p.m. and 7.45 p.m., an Army spokesman said. Indian troops repulsed the attack in which 10 Pakistani soldiers were killed. "The Indian picket is still under intense shelling,’’ he said.

The bodies of the killed Pakistani soldiers with weapons had been recovered. "No casualties have been reported on the Indian side,’’ he said.

Other details are being ascertained.

This is the first time that an attack of this magnitude has taken place from across the border since the Kargil war a few months ago.

The incident assumes significance in view of the changed political situation in Pakistan where sacked Army chief Gen Pervez Musharraf, the man behind Kargil, took over power in a bloodless coup by overthrowing the Nawaz Sharif government last month. back
