Tribune News Service

CHANDIGARH, Nov 16 — The police has arrested Sanjeev Sahu from Jagatsinghpur in Orissa for opening bank accounts by furnishing fictitious addresses and withdrawing money credited to his accounts by submitting fake demand drafts in other states.

He had opened bank accounts in the name of Om Parkash in IndusInd Bank in Sector 8. He had furnished copies of his ration card and driving licence to open an account in the bank and was issued a cheque book.

He had subsequently deposited demand drafts for Rs 1.83 lakh and Rs 1.68 lakh, purported to be issued by the SBI. The money was later withdrawn by him. The drafts were issued by the Lucknow branch of the bank and credited to his account on October 12 and 22. Withdrawals were made on various dates by the accused.

In the first week of November, Mr K.K. Sharma, bank manager and the complainant, received information from Centurion Bank, SAS Nagar, which he had duped, that a person by the name of Om Parkash was withdrawing large amounts after depositing demand drafts issued by the SBI at Bangalore and Lucknow.

Following this information, his accounts were kept under close observation. When he came to the bank today to withdraw Rs 2.85 lakh, he was nabbed by the bank authorities and handed over to the police.

During preliminary investigation, he revealed that his name was Sanjeev Sahu and he was a matriculate. While further investigations are on, a city court has remanded him in police custody till November 19.

He had also duped the branch of Centurion Bank in Phase 3-B-2, SAS Nagar, of Rs 3.9 lakh by withdrawing the money against a bank draft which was allegedly stolen from the Goa branch of State Bank of India. He had opened an account in the name of Om Parkash, a resident of Sector 22, Chandigarh, on October 1, with the branch. He deposited Rs 500 on opening the account and submitted a copy of a ration card to give his identity.

On October 22, he deposited a bank draft for Rs 3.93 lakh payable at State Bank of India. After the draft was cleared by the Goa branch of the bank, he took the cash payment in different parts on October 28, 29 and 30.

The duped bank came to know about the fraud after the Goa branch of the SBI informed it about the theft of a draft for Rs 3.93 lakh. Enquires at the Chandigarh address of the suspect revealed that the address was fake and he was wanted in similar cases by other banks, including the Chandigarh branch of the ICICI Bank. Defrauder held: The police arrested Joginderpal Sharma of Kishangarh village on the charge of collecting Rs 25 lakh from five persons on the pretext of sending them to the USA. He and his son Vishal Vashisht used to lure and dupe prospective customers.

Dadwal, Mr Jaswinder Singh and Mr Rajinder Singh and two others, who alleged that varying sums were collected from them but neither was the money retuned nor were they sent abroad. Vishal is absconding, while a city court has remanded Joginderpal in police custody till November 18.
