AMRITSAR
Book exhibition:
Dr S.P. Singh, Dean, Colleges, on Monday inaugurated a three-day book exhibition here, which was organised by the National Book Trust, Delhi, in collaboration with the Singh Brothers Publication House as part of the national book week. Over 2,500 books in Punjabi, Hindi and English were displayed.

FAZILKA
Liquor seized:
The local police has seized two illicit liquor distilling units. According to Mr Harbans Singh Riar, SHO, 50 kg of raw material and 42 bottles of liquor were seized at Asafwala and Sajrana villages of the subdivision. Amar Singh, Jit Singh and Mukhtiar Singh, residents of Asafwala village, and Kashmir Singh of Sajrana village have been arrested in this connection and a case under the Excise Act registered against them.

GURDASPUR
House owners:
The District Magistrate, Mr S.K. Sandhu, has directed all house owners in the district to intimate the nearest police station about the tenants and persons visiting them from across the district and also about the migratory labour. These orders will remain in force till January 9.

Medical camp: A former minister, Mr Khushal Bahl, with the help of the local branch of Ramsharanam Ram Seva Swami Satyanand Trust, Gohana, organised a free medical camp here on Sunday on the occasion of the World Diabetic Day. A team of doctors examined 60 patients of diabeties and distributed medicines among them. As many as 655 patients were examined for eye, 330 for ear, nose and throat and 176 for heart diseases.

Assn for Democratic Rights: The following have been elected office-bearers of the Association for Democratic Rights: president — Mr Jagjiwan Lal; vice-president — Mr Ranit Singh; secretary — Mr Ranbiur Aakash; joint secretary — Mr Amarjit Mani; and treasurer — Mr Kulwant Singh Pahra.

HOSHIARPUR
Drug de-addiction camp:
The local Bhai Ghanayiaji Mission organised a drug de-addiction and blood donation motivation camp at the local Government Girls Senior Secondary School on Sunday. Speaking on the occasion, Dr Vijay Kumar Bodal highlighted the ill effects of addiction. He advised the youth not to take drugs.

Employees' demand: Resentment prevails among class III and class IV employees of municipal councils over the provincialisation of their respective posts. In a press note issued here on Monday, Mr Munshi Ram and Mr Amarjit Singh Khalsa, president and general secretary, respectively, of the local Octroi Employees Union, urged the state government to take back the notification in this regard failing which employees would launch a statewide agitation.

LUDHIANA
Seminar on child labour:
The Department of Labour on Monday organised a seminar on child labour in order to mark the Children's Day celebrations. The seminar was inaugurated by an industrialist, Mr Mohinder Singh Bhagat.

Appointed: Mrs Shamim Bano has been appointed as the district president of the Muslim cell of the Janata Dal (United).

NAWANSHAHR
Dharna:
The district unit of the Punjab Youth Congress on Monday staged a dharna in front of the office of the Deputy Commissioner in protest against the "policies of the Badal government". Punjab Youth Congress President Davinder Singh Babbu addressed the protesters.

PATHANKOT
Cultural programme:
The fifth annual cultural programme will be organised at Government Senior Secondary School, Sujanpur, on November 21 and 22 by the local Adarsh Kala Mandir Club. According to its president, Jathedar Bharat Bhushan Sharma, the programme will be inaugurated by Mr S. Sucha Singh Langah, Industry Minister, Punjab.

PHAGWARA
Foundation stone:
Mr K.L. Verma, member of Central Board of Excise and Customs, will visit the district on November 25 to lay the foundation stone of an office-cum-residential complex of the Central Excise Ranges. This was disclosed here on Monday in an official statement.

Cane growers' stir: The round-the-clock indefinite dharna by cane growers outside the SDM's office here entered the sixth day on Monday. The cane growers have now declared that they will step up stir by blocking vehicular traffic here on November 19 and holding a protest march in the town. They are demanding immediate commencement of cane crushing by the local Oswal Agro Sugar Mill.

Hospital sanctioned: A sum of Rs 43 lakh has been received for the 13-km-long Mehli-Chehru Phagwara bypass. The state government has also sanctioned a 100-bed hospital for the town. A plan for a flyover at the local Satnampura railway crossing has been prepared. This was disclosed by the Punjab Education Minister, Mr Swarna Ram, at a subdivisional meeting held here on Monday to take stock of various development projects.

PHILLAUR
Arrest:
The Phillaur police on Monday arrested Pritam Singh and recovered a .38 bore pistol and three live cartridges from him near Dhesian Kanna village in the subdivision. He was a resident of Friend's Colony, Phagwara, the police said.

TARN TARAN
Pay commission:
The Goindwal Cooperative Spinning Mills Employees Union in a press note issued here on Monday demanded implementation of the fourth Punjab Pay Commission. Mr Kulwinder Singh Nagoke and Mr Tarsem Singh, president and general secretary, respectively, of the union, said it was regrettable that officials had been given pay scales according to the fourth pay commission and had drawn their arrears whereas employees of class III and IV had been neglected.

Pledge: The Adviser to the Administrator of Chandigarh, Mrs Vineeta Rai, will administer the National Integration Day pledge to the staff of the Administration on November 19 at the UT Secretariat at 10.45 a.m., it was announced here on Tuesday.

Celebrations: A function to mark the silver jubilee celebrations and the annual convention of the Association of Exploration Geophysicists (AEG) will be held at the CII here on Wednesday. The main themes include exploration, education and industry in hydrocarbons, minerals and groundwater. The lead paper will be presented by Prof Colin V. Reeves (ITC).

Conference: The PGI will be organising the 23rd national conference of the Indian Association of Medical Microbiologists from November 18 to 21. According to an official release, this is the first time since the inception of this organisation in 1977 that this conference is being held at the PGI. More than 600 scientists from India and abroad will take part in various scientific deliberations.

SAS NAGAR
Competition:
As many as 600 students of different schools from Chandigarh, Kharar, Ropar, Patiala, Moga and SAS Nagar participated in a competition in Gurbani kirtan and Gurmat lectures organised by the Gurbani Iss Jag Meh Chanan Sanstha at Gurdwara Shri Guru Singh Sabha here on Sunday. The first three position holders were given special prizes by the sangat.

Elected:

REWARI
Youth arrested:
The Dharuhera police has arrested a youth, Vijender Yadav, son of Hiralal Yadav, resident of Balair Khurd village, about 8 km from here, and also recovered a young girl, daughter of a Dalit, Hetlal. It is alleged, that the girl was kidnapped from the village in September, 1998 and taken to Meerut, Agra etc where she was raped repeatedly allegedly by her abductor. The police has registered cases of abduction and rape against the accused.

SIRSA
Three arrested:
Baldev Singh and his brother, Mangeram and Amrik Singh of Rampura Theri village in the district were arrested on Monday on the charge of cruelty to a married woman here. The SP said here on Tuesday that in a complaint to the police, Paramjit Kaur of Bhaudeen village, had alleged that her husband, Baldev Singh, who was living in Amrik Singh's house, had developed illicit relations with Kulwant Kaur, wife of the owner of the house, to which she objected. She alleged that she was beaten by her husband and Mange Ram and had been kicked out from her in-law’s house. She further alleged that the accused were demanding dowry from her parents.

Truck recovered: A stolen truck of Lakhvinder Singh Khari of Sirsa was recovered by the local police from Bhadra town in Rajasthan on Monday. The truck was stolen on November 7 from outside Lakhwinder's house.

Sentenced: Harvir Singh Dhaia, Judicial Magistrate, First Class, sentenced Sukhdev Singh of Sangersandhan village to one-year imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 1,000 on him here on Monday in a criminal case of the Excise Act.

Held: Sattu, alias Satpal, of Nejadela Khurd in the district, was arrested here on Monday on the charge of smuggling narcotic drugs. Giving this information, Mr Kameshver Kumar Mishra, SP, said here on Tuesday that the police had recovered 20 kg of poppy husk from his possession. A case had been registered.

YAMUNANAGAR
Killed: Tarun Kumar, a truck conductor, was killed in a collision between two trucks at the camp area, near here, on Monday evening, according to information received here on Tuesday. The Farakhpur police has registered a case.

Traffic blocked: Thousands of residents from 25 villages of Chhachhrauli block blocked traffic on the Jagadhri-Poanta Sahib on Monday in protest against the authorities' failure to repair the Deodhar-Khadri road, which had been extensively damaged. The villagers sat on Dharna and alleged that the PWD (B&R) had used substandard material for making the road, due to which it had been completely damaged.top

PALAMPUR
Woman killed:
A woman was killed when an HRTC bus dashed against a scooter near Cafe Bhairav on the outskirts of Baijnath town, 14 km from here, on Monday. The victim, Suman Lata (35), fell down from the scooter and died on the spot after her vehicle was hit by the bus. The police has impounded the bus and arrested the driver, Rajinder Kumar.

SUNDERNAGAR
Anti-pollution camp:
A one-day free pollution check-up camp was organised at Jawahar Park here on Sunday. The SDM, Mr Vijay Chanden, was the chief guest. More than 100 vehicles were inspected and pollution check-up certificates issued to the vehicle owners.
