41 die, 56 pc turnout in final phase
NEW DELHI, Oct 3 — At least 41 persons were killed in poll violence today, pushing the death toll in the current elections to 103 as the final phase of balloting for 118 Lok Sabha seats and 106 Assembly seats in 10 states and a union territory ended today.

Exit polls predict BJP, allies majority
NEW DELHI, Oct 3 — Exit poll telecast on Doordarshan and Star TV predicted a majority for the BJP and its allies in the Lok Sabha for which elections concluded today.

Parties position for hung verdict
NEW DELHI, Oct 3 — Major political parties in the country have started positioning for another "hung Parliament", though both the BJP and Congress leaders exude confidence of a ‘clear verdict’ in their favour.

Army warns JKLF of action
JAMMU, Oct 3 — The Army today warned Amanullah Khan’s Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front against crossing the Line of Control from Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir, saying the violators would be dealt with sternly and fired at.

RAWALAKOT, Oct 3 — The Pakistani police today arrested more than 100 Kashmiri activists and deployed in force to prevent what one government minister has called a "suicide" march into the Indian-administered Kashmir tomorrow.

HISAR, Oct 3 — The CCS Haryana Agricultural University today placed under suspension Chief Medical Officer V.A. Sangwan and removed the Director, Students Welfare Dr D.S. Nandal, and the Chief Security Officer from their posts for alleged negligence in providing timely medicare to Manav Marwah who died after he was shot at by a classfellow on the night of October 1.

Suraj Bhan given charge of Bihar
NEW DELHI, Oct 3 — Uttar Pradesh Governor Suraj Bhan was today given additional charge of Bihar till a regular appointment was made. A Rashtrapati Bhavan communiqué said Mr Bhan was appointed by President K R Narayanan to discharge the functions of Bihar Governor in addition to his own duties.

'Maximum alert' in Anantnag

ANANTNAG, Oct 3 — Apprehending trouble and violence, the security forces have been put on the "maximum alert" to ensure trouble-free polling in the Anantnag parliamentary constituency which goes to the polls tomorrow to decide the fate of 18 candidates, including two former Union Ministers.
