45 dead as bus hits cliff
JAKARTA, Oct 5 (Reuters) At least 45 persons were
killed and over 10 injured when a bus hit a cliff in
Indonesias west Java province today, the official
news agency Antara reported. The bus had hit a cliff in
the highland area of Puncak, about 80 km south of
Jakarta, which is also popular weekend holiday spot.
Antara, quoting various hospital sources, said that most
of the dead had been identified. Lieutenant killed
NEW DELHI, Oct 5 (PTI) In a daring incident, a
lieutenant of 19 Grenadiers posted at the Line of Control
(LoC) saved the lives of six of his men before being hit
by a mortar bomb by Pakistan in the Jammu region. Lt
Prateek Acharya and his men were manning Pallanwala in
Chhamb area when two Pakistani 82 mm mortar bombs landed
in the platoon area. The incident took place on September
27. Lt Acharya pushed five of his men into a bunker. But
the moment he stepped out of the bunker, he was hit by
the mortar shell and died on the spot.
Pak to attend
ISLAMABAD (AFP): Pakistan has decided to attend the CTBT
conference to speed up the ratification of the CTBT as an
observer. Pakistan has not signed the treaty but it would
like to be informed about the proceedings of the
conference, a Foreign Office spokesman said on Tuesday.
Pakistan's Ambassador in Vienna Shaukat Umar would attend
the two-day conference as an observer.
23 killed in
Egypt
CAIRO, Oct 5 (DPA) At least 23 persons were killed
and 22 injured when a bus carrying workers collided with
a truck today near the Egyptian port of Suez, the police
said. The bus carrying workers to a nearby cement factory
collided head on with a truck on a one-way road. A taxi
also crashed into the bus, killing its passengers, the
police said.
N-radiation
SEOUL, Oct 5 (Reuters) Twentytwo workers were
exposed to radiation at a South Korean nuclear power
plant yesterday from a leak of heavy water during
maintenance work on the plants water cooling pump,
Yonhap news agency said. Yonhap said the accident
occurred at about 7 p.m. yesterday at Wolsung nuclear
power reactor no. 3 in northern Kyongsang province,
according to the Ministry of Science and Technology.
Jakarta backs
out
JAKARTA, Oct 5 (AFP) The Indonesian Government
today reversed its position and said it will not
cooperate in any inquiry by the UN Human Rights
Commission into alleged atrocities in East Timor.
"If the UN commission insists on sending personnel
to East Timor, we will not cooperate," Foreign
Minister Ali Alatas said after meeting Indonesian
President B.J. Habibie at Merdeka Palace.

Mishra today moved the court of designated CBI judge
seeking discharge in a conspiracy angle case of the
fodder scam. Designated Judge S.K. Lal, fixed November 20
as the next date for hearing the petitions.

NEW DELHI, Oct 5 (PTI) Former President Shankar
Dayal Sharma has been selected for the 1998 Indira Gandhi
Award for National Integration. The award, comprises a
citation and cash prize of Rs 1.51 lakh. It will be given
away by Congress President Sonia Gandhi on October 31,
the death anniversary of former Prime Minister Indira
Gandhi.
8 killed in
London train crash
LONDON, Oct 5 (PTI) At least 26 persons were
killed and 160 injured after two mainline trains collided
during rush hour here this morning. The crash occurred
between Great Western and Thames high-speed trains at
Ladbroke Grove in the western part of the city, British
transport police said. Carriages caught fire and scores
of passengers were still beleived to be trapped. Reports
suggest that 40 persons may be injured seriously.
