NDA set to assume reins of power
NEW DELHI, Oct 7 — Having won a clear majority, the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) today initiated moves for assuming reins of power at the Centre under the leadership of Mr Atal Behari Vajpayee, who will be the first Prime Minister outside Gandhi-Nehru family to take charge for a third time.

NEW DELHI, Oct 7 — The Congress President, Mrs Sonia Gandhi, today admitted the results of the 13th Lok Sabha were not up to the expectations of the party and said it was time for "introspection, frank assessment and determined action’’.

Congress storms back to power in Karnataka
NEW DELHI, Oct 7 — After a five-year gap, the Congress stormed back to power in Karnataka but the ruling Shiv Sena-BJP alliance was maintaining its lead in the Maharashtra Assembly elections and the ruling Telugu Desam party was on course for a comfortable majority in Andhra Pradesh.

1 killed on college campus
BATHINDA, Oct 7 — Gobind, a resident of Deep Nagar, was killed in a clash on the campus of Rajindra College here today. Another youth, Jaspal Singh of Birtalab village, was seriously injured in the clash.
