Ball set rolling for govt formation
TDP pledges support to NDA
NEW DELHI, Oct 8 — The ball was today set rolling for the formation of the National Democratic Alliance government with its major allies the Telugu Desam Party and Trinamool Congress conveying to President K.R. Narayanan their support, but there was uncertainty whether the TDP would join it to impart a feeling of stability.

MUMBAI, Oct 8 — In fast-paced developments, the Congress and BJP-Shiv Sena alliance today stepped up efforts to put together a government in Maharashtra which threw up a fractured verdict in the assembly elections.

Punjab doubles sales tax on diesel
CHANDIGARH, Oct 8 — While the people are yet to recover from the shock given by the Central Government by raising the diesel price by 35 per cent on October 5, the Punjab Government today doubled sales tax on diesel, raising it from 4 per cent to 8 per cent with immediate effect.

SC no to review death penalty

NEW DELHI, Oct 8 — Gallows await four condemned prisoners in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case with the Supreme Court today rejecting their petitions seeking review of an earlier judgement confirming the death penalty to them.

AMRITSAR, Oct 8 — The notorious 'Cobra Gang' having some police officials on its rolls is suspected to have resurfaced after a gap of decade.



Scandal in Health Dept
SHIMLA, Oct 8 — The state Vigilance Department has uncovered a major scandal in the Health Department in which funds to the tune of over Rs 73 lakh were misutilised under the AIDS awareness programme.
