West Indies win by 73 runs

DHAKA, Oct 8 (PTI) — West Indies defeated Bangladesh by 73 runs in the first tie of the two-match One-Day International Cricket Series here tonight.

Chasing West Indies’ massive score of 292 for six off 50 overs, Bangladesh could manage only 219 for the loss of five wickets off their allotted quota in the day-night clash at the Bangabandhu National Stadium here.

Earlier, A fluent 92 by Shivnarine Chanderpaul helped West Indies pile up 292 for six against Bangladesh in a one-day international today.

West Indies had lost the wickets of captain Brian Lara (2) and fellow opener Sherwin Campbell (13) with just 29 runs on board before Jimmy Adams and Wavel Hinds put them back on track with a third-wicket partnership of 54.

Hinds, who was dropped by Bangladesh skipper Aminul Islam with his score on 18, hit a valuable 40 before being caught by Habibul Bashar off Khaled Mahmud.

Chanderpaul and Adams added a further 92 runs before Adams was brilliantly caught by Khaled at cover off captain Aminul Islam having scored 56.

Chanderpaul completed the 14th half-century of his career, punishing the Bangladesh bowling on his way to a score of 92 not out, hitting four fours and one six in 109 balls.

Hard-hitting Ricardo Powell made a quickfire 34 off 23 balls with four towering sixes as West Indies hurried the score along.

Nixon McLean, dropped twice by Hasibul Hossain off successive deliveries by Monjurul Islam in the 48th over, hammered 39, including three sixes and one four, off 22 balls.

Teams arrive for first Test
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, Oct 8 -- "Aaj holiday tha, aaj nahin,"replied newly-appointed Indian team coach Kapil Dev as scribes tried to encircle the former legendary all rounder with a view to eliciting his views about the day's proceedings and his brief association with players after he wound up the day's hectic practice session with the Indian team.

"Ye practice session nahin tha. Kal baat karenge," he retorted, though with all humility, when scribes awaiting eagerly for his views pressed him further.

World's highest wicket-taker in Tests,as everybody knows, was a fitness fad during his playing days and never missed any match on account of injury. That the team will not be allowed any relaxation on this count must have become amply evident to the players as Kapil put them to batting and bowling practice and fielding drills at the Punjab Cricket Stadium at SAS Nagar in the evening, shortly after the team arrived in the city by an afternoon flight for the first Test of the Pepsi Challenger three-Test series.

Indian captain Sachin Tendulkar, showing no discomfort on account of back injury, which forced him to skip Toronto and Narobi one-day tournaments, looked quite focussed while facing pacers Javagal Srinath, Venkatesh Prasad and offie Harbhajan Singh and mostly played from the meat of the bat.

Kapil kept middle order batsman Rahul Dravid, opener Sadagopan Ramesh and Debang Gandhi engaged offering sharp 'slip catches'. Tendulkar, as soon as he finished his batting, joined then immediately after he was through with the batting session, in order to shed rustiness that might have crept in on account of the forced lay-off.

Sunil Joshi, Anil Kumble and Debashish Mohanty kept on fine-tuning their bowling skills, though with a shortened run up,giving batting practice to Saurav Ganguly, wicketkeeper MSK Prasad, Rahul Dravid and Gandhi.Batting and fielding session over, Kapil engaged the players in brief running and catching practice.

The New Zealand team, which also arrived in the afternoon preferred to skip the practice probably and give valuable rest to players as them finished its three-day fixture against the Board President's XI at Jodhpur only yesterday.

However, they will be at the nets tomorrow morning to prepare themselves for the first Test scheduled to start on Sunday. The spirit of New Zealanders must be very high as their premier batsman Craig McMillan ran into form at the right moment notching up his highest score in first class cricket in the Jodhpur match.

World champs France face elimination

LONDON, Oct 8 (AP) — A Russia-Ukraine tie in Moscow and an Icelandic shutout in Paris will mean that World Cup holders France won’t make it to next year’s European Championship.

Six more teams will qualify for the finals and six more will make the playoffs this weekend, but the world champion may not be among them.

The final rounds of qualifying games are taking place and, by Sunday night, 12 teams will have made it to the 16-nation finals while eight more will advance to the playoffs to decide the other four.

The Czech Republic, Norway, Spain and Sweden have already qualified, joining co-hosts Belgium and the Netherlands, while Slovenia and Scotland are definitely in the playoffs.

But the heroes of France ’98 hope they won’t be watching the Euros on TV.

First-time winners of the World Cup last year, Zinedine Zidane and his countrymen lie third in their qualifying group and must beat Iceland at the Stade de France tomorrow. It’s so close in group 4 that France could win the group and qualify automatically if the Russia-Ukraine game in Moscow is tied.

Ukraine, powered by AC Milan’s Andrij Shevchenko and members of the formidable Dynamo Kiev team, leads the standings with 19 points while the Russians and the French have 18. Wins for Russia and France would mean the Russians qualify as group winners, the French go into the playoffs and Ukraine slips from first to third and is eliminated.

It’ll be pretty tense in Italy and Germany tomorrow and also in England, which isn’t even playing.

The Italians blew a chance of automatic qualification when they squandered a two-goal lead and lost 3-2 at home to Denmark in their last game.

Now they go to Belarus needing a point to guarantee first place. A loss would give the Danes the group championship. The Italians could qualify as the runner-up with the best record. Otherwise, like for the last World Cup, they would go to a playoff.

Defending champions Germany need only a point at home to second place Turkey to clinch a place in the finals but the Germans need no reminding they lost to the Turks a year ago.

A tie may suit the Turks as they could go forward as the best runner up, depending on goal difference and other results. At the very least they are guaranteed a place in the playoffs.

England, who play Belgium in a friendly at Sunderland on Sunday, have completed their qualifying games and stand second in group 5. So Kevin Keegan’s team has to rely on group winner Sweden beating third place Poland at home tomorrow.

The situation in group 8 is on a knife-edge too with Croatia, Yugoslavia and Ireland all jostling for the two positions and all three in with a chance of finishing top.

The Croatia-Yugoslavia game will be tense both on and off the field after the breakup of the old Yugoslavia and the recent history between the neighbours.

The Croatians, third place finishers at the World Cup and third in the group with 14 points, need to win to finish in the top two. And a tie is not really much use to Yugoslavia (16 points) because that would allow Ireland (15) to finish top by winning at Macedonia.

Behind Spain in group 6 come Israel and Cyprus, neither of whom have qualified for a major international soccer championship before but now are fighting over a playoff place.

The Israelis (13 points) are one ahead of the Cypriots and go to Spain hoping the home team is in a celebratory mood while Cyprus need to win at Austria to stand any chance of finishing second. A tie is no good because its head-to-head goal difference with Israel is inferior.

Group 7 leaders Romania are virtually sure of qualifying and are expected to beat a Liechtenstein team who are last and have won only one of their nine games.

Portugal should beat Hungary at home and that means a chance of being the best runner up.

That is calculated from the results each runner up gets against the teams who finish first, third and fourth in their groups.

The benchmark appears to be won four, tied one and lost one. Italy, if they finish second, have already achieved that while Portugal and Turkey have chances to be 4-1-1 as well. If they do, it all goes down to goal difference.

Agassi scrapes into last 8

BASEL (Switzerland), Oct 8 (AP) — Top-ranked Andre Agassi saved three match points in a 6-4, 5-7, 7-5 victory over France’s Nicolas Escude in the second round of the Swiss Indoors.

Second-ranked Yevgeny Kafelnikov and third-seed Greg Rusedski had an easier time advancing to the quarterfinals, each posting straight-set victories.

Agassi, the French and US Open champion, began strongly, but wilted under the pressure of the 23-year-old Frenchman, who lost to the American star in straight sets in the US Open.

Playing relaxed, Agassi capitalised on his first break opportunity late in the opening set, delivering a blistering smash to jump ahead 5-4.

But the 54th-ranked Escude, full of confidence coming off his first career title in Toulouse last week, was not about to defer to Agassi’s reputation or ranking.

The determined Frenchman evened the contest at a set apiece with a timely break at 6-5 when Agassi’s shot went long. He then vaulted to a 3-0 lead in the final set after breaking the American’s opening serve and holding his own.

But Agassi, displaying the steely nerve of a true champion, staged a thrilling comeback.

Down 2-5 and serving, the American rallied to save a first match point, bringing the roaring crowd to its feet.

The American then broke at 3-5 to get back on serve only to see Escude threaten his hard-fought return with another two match points.

But the American, with the crowd firmly in his corner, produced a string of spectacular shots to stay in the contest.

Once again playing with confidence, an attacking Agassi went on to break Escude’s next serve then held for the match.

While Rusedski barely worked up a sweat, dispatching Dominik Hrbaty 6-2, 6-2 in under an hour, Kafelnikov suffered a second set scare against French qualifier Lionel Roux before winning 6-1, 7-6 (7-1).

Kafelnikov, challenging Agassi for the No 1 spot in the final rankings of the year, seemed poised to imitate Rusedski’s speedy advance, breaking Roux’s opening serve of the match and recording two successive love service games on his own.

But the 25-year-old Russian ran into difficulty in the second set, with Roux breaking to lead 4-2. The Australian Open champion managed to regain his serve in the next game, but was unable to tame the French qualifier until the tiebreak.

Rusedski dominated from start to finish. After splitting the first four games, Rusedski picked up steam, his break at 3-2 triggering a run of seven straight games.

Feroz continues dream run
From Our Sports Reporter

NEW DELHI, Oct 8 - Feroz Ali continued his dream run in the Wills Sports Indian Golf Tour when he returned a superb five-under 67 card to lead the field on the opening day of the Rs 5.5 lakh Surya Nepal Masters at the Le Meridien Gokarna Forest Golf Resort in Kathmandu today.

The current ‘Order of Merit’ leader pumped the excitement back into the tournament after the first two days were lost due to rains and a nation-wide call. Feroz, the 1998 Wills Indian Open champion, opened up a two stroke lead over second placed Rohtas Singh and Harmeet Kahlon who were three-under 69. Mukesh Kumar took the sole possession of the fourth spot at two-under 70.

Apart from Feroz, Rohtas and Mukesh, the newcomers on the Will Sport Golf Tour stole the limelight with seven players in their rookie of second year on the Tour occupying the top 15 places.

Feroz, winner of the Color Plus in Chennai this year, had a sterling start from the 10th tee. He was absolutely brilliant with his woods and irons and had 16 regulations. Birdies on 11th, 12th, 15th, and 16th sandwitched a lone bogey on the 14th where his tee shot entered the water hazard. Except for the third hole, where he three-putted from the edge of the green, Feroz exploited the par-5s beautifully and made birdies on the other four. On his back nine, he added two more birdies on the 6th and 9th holes.

“I am feeling very confident after changing my swing recently during a tournament in Malaysia. I also changed my golf set to Wilson which is suiting me fine. After missing the cut in this year’s Indian Open, I have practised extra hard and it seems to be paying off,” said the Calcutta-based pro after the round.

Rohtas, who had the best round in the pro-am with a five-under, followed it up with a three under 69 today. After making a bogey on the second hole where he three-putted from 30 feet, Rohtas hit a purple patch from the ninth hole onward as he made birdies on the 9th, 11th, 12th, and 13th holes for his 69. “I will take a 69 any day. I missed a three-footer birdie putt on the seventh and that rankles me a bit,” he said later.

Harmeet had to wait almost an hour before submitting his three-under 69 card. On the par-4 sixth hole, the ball moved a little before he could address it on a downhill lie in the rough. He ended with a bogey there, which was his only blemish of the day. His birdies came on the 4th,11th, 12th and 15th holes. “I played petty solid. I have no complaints,” said the Arjuna Award winner who turned pro this year.

Mukesh Kumar made an eagle on par-3 third, but promptly levelled the advantage with a double bogey on the fourth Birdies on 12th and 16th made up his final tally.

The best Nepalese pro was Ramesh Nagarkoti, winner of Surya Western Open, a local Nepalese tournament, who returned a one-under 71 card to be joint fifth with Yusuf Ali.

Scores (after 18 holes): 67 Feroz Ali; 69 Rohtas Singh, Harmeet Kahlon; 70 Mukesh Kumar; 71 Ramesh Nagarkoti (Nep), Yusuf Ali; 72 Amit Dubey, Mohd Maqbool; 73 Digvijay Singh, Gursimran Sethi, Pashupati Sharma (Nep), Amritinder Singh, Ajay Gupta, Indrajit Bhalotia; 74 Deepak Acharya, Zai Kipgen, Tarun Sardesai, Vikramjit Singh. Amateurs: 75 Rajan Thapa; 79 Yelambar Adhikari; 83 Umesh Nagarkoti, B.D. Ryu.

India go down to SA 0-3

LONDON, Oct 8 (PTI) — Jeev Milkha Singh failed to weave his magic again as India slumped to a 0-3 defeat against defending champions South Africa on the second day of Alfred Dunhill Cup Golf Tournament at St Andrews, Scotland today.

Jeev, who stunned England’s Lee Westwood in his second appearance in the tournament yesterday, lost to top South African Ernie Els 69-72.

Mahindra ‘golfer of the year’ award winner Vijay Kumar went down to Retief Goosen, who fired a superb 5-under 67 as against 75 of the Indian while Jyoti Randhawa lost 74-68 to David Frost as the third seeds remained on course for an unprecedented third straight victory in the tournament.

India, playing for the second time in the 16-team competition after their superb performance in 1996 when they defeated favourites Scotland, have no point after two successive defeats in the four-match first round.

Gurbaaz clinches title
Tribune News Service

CHANDIGARH, Oct 8 — Local favourite Gurbaaz Mann, a plus-one student of Bhavan Vidyalaya, today walked away with the St Xavier's Northern India Golf Trophy for the best junior golfer with a convincing lead of nine strokes over his nearest rival. His phenomenal opening round of the tournament — a 5 under par 67 — made the task look easy even though Mohammed Wazir, a Category 'B' entrant, did extremely well to give him some competition.

Opening with a bogey on the first hole Gurbaaz let loose a string of pars to drop only one more shot till the 11th hole. Two more bogeys on the 12th and 13th were balanced by a birdie on the par-five 16th. Then with an unassailable lead in his pocket Gurbaaz tried to drive the green on the dog-leg 17th and paid the penalty with an out-of-bounds and consequent double bogey.

He closed out the championship however with a solid par and a nine-stroke lead over Mohammed Wazir who had been keeping up with Gurbaaz till a disastrous triple bogey on the par five 16th put paid to his hopes of winning the main title.

In Category 'B' Mohammed Wazir, the runaway winner with a stupendous lead of 25 strokes, was followed by Sagar Bhatia who played another good round of 9 over par 81 to overhaul an overnight four-stroke deficit and pip Jaskeerat Singh Dullet for second place.

In Category 'C' Aditya Singh romped home with a massive 21-stroke lead over Balpreet Ghuman. Karan Vasudeva battling with Gaganjeet Bhullar for third place had to concede in the end.

The final scores:

Category 'A' (under 18): Gurbaaz Mann 67+75+77+76 = 295, Mohammed Wazir 72+76+75+81 = 304, Jassanjeet S Dullet 77+78+79+77 = 311, Rajiv Kumar 77+82+78+78 = 315, Harinder Gupta 79+82+84+76 = 321, Manav Jain 78+77+83+84 = 322.

Sunil beats Panja, enters final

NEW DELHI, Oct 8 (PTI) — Qualifier Sunil Kumar realised his dream with a stunning performance as he stormed into the final against seventh seed Mustafa Ghouse, while women’s top seeds Sai Jayalakshmi and Rushmi Chakravarthi ousted Venkataraman sisters to set up a summit clash in the DSCL Open National Tennis Championships here today.

The 16-year-old Chandigarh boy, who yesterday made it to the semifinals when veteran Asif Ismail withdrew citing fatigue, today gave a sterling performance in beating fourth seed Saurav Panja 6-0 4-6 6-4 for his maiden final.

Doubles specialist Mustafa Ghouse, finding a perfect rhythm, cracked several aces and passing winners to subdue the challenge of former national champion Vasudeva Reddy 7-5 6-1.

Number one seed Sai Jayalakshmi and Rushmi Chakravarthi, the second seed, demolished the Venkatraman sisters — Archana and Arthi — in the women’s semifinals.

Sai became nervous while serving for the tie but eventually beat Archana 6-2 6-3 using her flat baseline returns in the first semi. In the other, Rushmi found her shots failing to land in playing area in the first set and Arthi, a compulsive slogger, tried to force errors into her opponents game.

After losing the first set 4-6, Rushmi recovered her composure and though Arthi gave vent to her frustration, the National Games champion did not allow that to distract her and won the match 4-6 6-3 6-0.

In boy’s under-18 semifinals, top seed Akshay Vishal Rao and Parantap Chaturvedi won their matches; while Radhika Tulpule and Karishma Patel got through to the girl’s under-18 final.

Sunil Kumar, who was ousted in the boy’s U-18 quarters, came up with a stupendous performance in men’s event. He first dispatched Vijayendra Laad and then beat S.K. Shivshankar, the conqueror of second seed Vinod Sridhar.

In the quarters, he led 6-2 2-1 when Ismail retired, but today he eclipsed his performance in the earlier three rounds.

Taking on a seed for the first time, Sunil started with a bang and took the first set against Saurav Panja 6-0. Panja then raised the level of his play and took the second 6-4.

But a medical break taken by Sunil disturbed Panja, who had to keep waiting, and when the match re-started, the Chandigarh lad came out with more vigour hitting excellent crosscourt winners and perfect lobs to foil Panja’s game.

Maharashtra’s Ghouse, who yesterday beat 1998 champion Nitin Kirtane, scored an emphatic straight-set win against fifth seed Vasudeva Reddy.

Ghouse capitalised on Reddy’s unforced errors and in a match of big-servers, Ghouse came up trumps 7-5 6-1 and looked favourite to take the title tomorrow. Sunil Kumar, the other finalist though may be having other ideas.

Sai Jayalakshmi was in punishing form from the start. She broke Archana in the opening game and though she lost her serve in the next, Sai traded the break in the third and raced to a 5-2 lead when Archana double-faulted in the seventh.

Sai served out the set 6-2 and again led 5-2 in the second before she got nervous and lost her serve. Archana had a chance to come back into the match but Sai returned well and her forehand crosscourt return found Archana netting it to lose the tie.

CHANDIGARH: The chairman of the Chandigarh Lawn Tennis Association, Mr Rajan Kashyap today lauded the performance of Sunil Kumar in the current championship in Delhi. In a press note issued here today, he said after Ramesh Krishnan, Sunil was the first player to reach the finals of a national men’s event at the age of 16. In 1992 when Sunil Kumar was only nine years old, the CLTA had selected him from Kapurthala in Punjab under the Rural Tennis Programme. In the past few years the lad has shown astonishing progress. The CLTA is planning Sunil’s career advancement and we will ensure that he gets maximum exposure at home and abroad, Mr Kashyap added.

Jalandhar 224 all out
From Our Sports Reporter

PATIALA, Oct 8 — Fine bowling by Amit Kakria and Sandeep Kohli enabled Patiala to restrict the strong batting line up of Jalandhar to 224 all out on day one of the two-day Katoch Shield cricket match played at the Dhruv Pandove Stadium here today.

Although Patiala will be chasing a modest total, the hosts may well have a tough fight on their hands as star batsman Reetinder Sodhi, who took the field today, may not bat for the hosts on the morrow as he has been called to Mohali, to provide some practice to the Indian batsmen, ahead of India’s first Test against New Zealand which starts on October 10.

Today, with the Jalandhar batsmen calling, the shorts early in the innings, the total failure of the rivals middle order, which included Ranji Trophy players Sandeep Sharma, known for his lusty hitting, and the formidable Amit Sharma, who scored a century in yesterday’s one-day match, came as a boon for the hosts, who ultimately bundled out Jalandhar for a meagre 224 all out. The stars of the day for the hosts were Amit Kakria (4 for 45) and Sandeep Kohli (3 for 46) who kept up the pressure on the batsmen.

Scores: Jalandhar (first innings) 224 all out (Harminder Jugnu 33, Sandeep Sharma 30, Kulbushan 26, A. Kakria 4 for 45, S. Kohli 3 for 46, Gautam Mandora 1 for 20, Lakhbir Singh 1 for 23)
