Atal invited to form govt
NEW DELHI, Oct 11 — Satisfied with the claim of the National Democratic Alliance that it commanded the support of 303 MPs, including 29 belonging to the Telugu Desam Party, for the alliance, the President, Mr K.R. Narayanan, today invited its leader, Mr Atal Behari Vajpayee of the BJP, to form the next government.

TDP, AGP not to join government
HYDERABAD, Oct 11 — The Telugu Desam Party today announced that it would not join the National Democratic Alliance Government at the Centre, party spokesman U. Venkateswarlu said here.

NEW DELHI, Oct 11 — The Congress Parliamentary Party (CPP) will meet here tomorrow to elect its Chairperson with a section exerting pressure on Mrs Sonia Gandhi to don the mantle as the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha.

New Central ministries likely
NEW DELHI, Oct 11 — In order to meet the demand of numbers created by the enlarged base of the National Democratic Alliance, (NDA), Mr Atal Behari Vajpayee, may create new ministries by bifurcating existing ones and amalgamating some of these departments.

NCP, Cong fail to agree
MUMBAI, Oct 11 — Efforts to form the new government in Maharashtra continued to remain deadlocked with the Congress and its breakaway Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), engaged in a tug of war over the post of Chief Minister and the Shiv Sena-BJP alliance failing to muster the requisite number to stake its claim so far.

CMs of four states sworn in
NEW DELHI, Oct 11 — A nine-member two-tier Telugu Desam Party (TDP) ministry headed by Mr N Chandrababu Naidu was sworn in in Andhra Pradesh and a change of guard took place in Karnataka's Vidhana Soudha as Mukut Mithi in Arunachal Pradesh and Pawan Kumar Chamling in Sikkim began fresh terms as Chief Ministers.


Cess on power projects quashed
HP court order saves PSEB 820 cr
CHANDIGARH, Oct 11 — In a significant judgement the cess imposed by the Himachal Pradesh Pollution Control Board on hydroelectric projects of the Punjab State Electricity Board and Haryana State Electricity Board, was quashed today by the Himachal Pradesh High Court as per the decision reported here today, saving the Punjab State Electricity Board Rs 820 crore.
