Dasehra celebrated with gusto

JAWALAMUKHI, Oct 19 — Dasehra was celebrated here with great enthusiasm and religious fervour today. Effigies of Ravana, Kumbhkarana and Meghnath were burnt at the Ramlila ground, Dehra, 10 km from here. Hundreds of people were present.

Addressing the gathering, the state BJP chief and MP, Mr Suresh Chandel said the 10-day Dasehra festival signified the triumph of good over evil. Lauding the role of the Ramlila Committee, Dehra, Mr Chandel said it was commendable that it had organised the festival which would go a long way in preserving the country's religious and cultural heritage.

He said the relevance of Ramayana had assumed greater significance in the present time. He expressed concern over the moral degradation in society and urged the people not to do evil.

CHAMBA: Dasehra was celebrated here with gaiety and religious fervour.

Effigies of Ravana, Meghnath and Kumbhkarna were brunt in the historic "chowgan" here. A large number of people were present.

The ancient Lakshmi Narayan temple was decorated and illuminated.

Earlier, a "shobha yatra" was taken out through the main bazaars of the town amidst great fanfare.

HOSHIARPUR: Dasehra was celebrated with great enthusiasm at the Ramlila ground here today. Thousands of people from the adjoining areas of Hoshiarpur witnessed the burning of effigies of Ravana and Kumbhkarna. Fireworks were also displayed on the occasion.

SANGRUR: Dasehra was celebrated here with great enthusiasm and gusto. Pooja was performed in homes and people exchanged greetings.

Mr Anirudh Tewari, Deputy Commissioner, in a message, urged people to follow the path of truth as shown by Lord Rama. The effigy of Ravana was burnt to symbolise the victory of truth over evil.

PHILLAUR: Dasehra was celebrated here with enthusiasm today. Effigies of Ravana, Meghnath and Kumbhkarana were brunt in the evening.

KAPURTHALA: Dasehra was celebrated with religious fervour here.

One function was organised at Devi Talab near the bus stand which was presided over by Mr V.K. Singh, Deputy Commissioner. Another function was organised at the P and T ground near the new Police Lines which was presided over by the SSP, Mr Iqbal Singh.

Effigies of Ravana, Kumbhkarana and Meghnath were burnt at both the functions.

Pooja was performed in temples. Sweetmeat sellers, toy sellers and sellers dealing in fireworks did brisk business.

PHAGWARA: Effigies of Ravana, Meghnath and Kumbhkarana were set ablaze at seven places here this evening on the occasion of Dasehra.

Punjab Education Minister Swarna Ram presided over the function at Talab Arorian.

Reports of Dasehra celebrations were also received from Behram, Banga, Nakodar and Adampur.

AMRITSAR : Dasehra depicting the victory of good over evil, was celebrated with great enthusiasm here today.

The main function was held at the Dasehra ground near the Durgiana temple, where effigies of Ravana, Meghnath and Kumbhkarana were burnt.

A large number of people from all walks of life witnessed a tableau depicting various scenes from the Ramayana.

Effigies of Ravana were also burnt at various residential colonies, including Kabir Park, Guru Nanak Dev University and Shivala.

The main bazaars were illuminated with multicoloured lamps and sweetmeat sellers were making a fast buck.

SHIMLA: Dasehra was celebrated with great enthusiasm and religious fervour in Himachal Pradesh today.

Thousands of people watched the burning of effigies of Ravana, Kumbhkarana and Meghnath at various places in the state.

In Shimla, people watched the fiery end of the demon trio at the Jakhu temple.

Governor V.S. Rama Devi and Chief Minister Prem Kumar Dhumal greeted the people on Dasehra.

PATIALA: Dasehra was celebrated with religious fervour here today.

The main ceremony of burning, effigies of Ravana, Kumbhkarana and Meghnath was held near Modi Mandir, where people turned up in large numbers. In the morning, people thronged the Kali Devi temple to offer prayers.

Residents of different colonies celebrated Dasehra by burning effigies in their compounds. Markets were decorated with colourful lights.

NAWANSHAHR: The Dasehra-Divali Utsav Committee here organised the main function on Dasehra in which effigies of Ravana, Kumbhkarana and Meghnath were burnt amidst a display of fireworks.

The committee also solemnised the marriage of a poor girl, when the "Sita swayamber" episode was being staged by the artistes from Vrindavan. Household articles were also gifted to newly wedded couples by the committee.
