407 take oath as 13th LS opens
NEW DELHI, Oct 20 — It was the first day of the 13th Lok Sabha and a total of 407 of the 537 newly-elected members of the House took oath starting with the Prime Minister, Mr Atal Behari Vajpayee.

Balayogi, Sayeed consensus nominees
NEW DELHI, Oct 20 — The choice for the posts of Lok Sabha Speaker and Deputy Speaker became clear today with the National Democratic Alliance-backed Telegu Desam nominee, Mr G.M.C. Balayogi, and a veteran Congress leader, Mr P.M. Sayeed, emerging as the consensus candidates.

Talks with truckers fail
Nationwide strike begins today
NEW DELHI, Oct 20 — Truck operators are likely to go ahead with their indefinite nationwide strike from 6 a.m. tomorrow with the government refusing to bow down to their demand and saying that the diesel prices would not be rolled back.

ISLAMABAD, Oct 20 — The Federal Investigation Agency of Pakistan has initiated a probe into ousted Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif’s alleged involvement in bank frauds and charged him with financial misdeeds amounting to over $ 100 million, a media report said here today.
