Two booked for assaulting cops

CHANDIGARH, Oct 20 — The police has registered a case against two unidentified youths for assaulting two constables of the police control room.

According to police sources, constables Darshan Singh and Naresh Kumar were on duty and were doing the rounds on their motor cycle when they spotted two motor cycle (CH-OI-9640)-borne youths riding without safety helmets near the T-point of Sector 37. They signalled the duo to stop but instead of stopping they sped away.

After a chase the accused were intercepted in the Sector 37 market. Instead of apologising they indulged in verbal duel with the cops and later reportedly manhandled the constables, during which the uniform of one of them was torn.

Since a large number of people had gathered on seeing the altercation, the duo took advantage of the situation and fled. A case under Sections 332, 353 and 186 of the IPC, has been registered at the Sector 39 police station.

Car stolen: In separate incidents, two cars were stolen from Sector 17.

Mr S.S. Pandhi, a resident of Sector 43-A, reported that his car (HNH-1500) was stolen from the parking lot near Neelam cinema.

Ms Sushma Khaira, a resident of Sector 21, reported that her car (HR- 26D-0004) was stolen from the same parking lot.

Cases under Section 379, IPC, have been registered at the Central police station.

MANI MAJRA

Body found: The police has found the body of an unidentified youth from near a gutter in the Mani Majra motor market.

Police sources said the body was dressed in tatters and there were no signs of any external injuries. The deceased appeared to be in his 30s. Efforts are on to identify the body.

PANCHKULA

Two injured: Two persons, Surinder Singh and Kesar Singh, were injured at Rampur Jangi on the Nalagarh road after they were knocked down by a tanker, (HR-01-GA 0299). The two were on a motor cycle, (GBI 3889). The driver of the tanker fled from the scene after the accident though the tanker has been impounded by the police. A case under Sections 279 and, 337 of the IPC has been registered.

PINJORE

Case registered: Ravinder Kumar, a bank employee at Shimla, has registered a case of theft of goods worth Rs 10,000 with the Pinjore police. In his complaint, he has stated that on his return from Shimla, he found that his house in Vasudevpura had been broken into and household items were missing. A case under Sections 454, and 380 of the IPC has been registered.

A theft of donations of over Rs 2500 was reported from the temple at HMT on the night of October 17. Three persons tried to break open the donation box and take out the donations. However, hearing noise, the chowkidaar of the temple arrived on the scene. The thieves took away some money while most of it was left on the premises only. A case under Sections 457 and 380 of the IPC has been registered.

SAS NAGAR

1 killed in mishap: The wife of an official of the Indian Air Force residing in Phase 11 died after being hit by a truck near a road dividing Phases 9 and 10. According to the information available, the deceased, Nandita Dutta (29), was driving her Kinetic Honda scooter when she was hit by a speeding truck.

The driver of the truck, Vikram Singh, escaped. A case has been registered against the truck driver.

Theft: Mr Kanwaljit Singh of Phase VII here has complained to the police that his house was broken into while he was away to Paonta Sahib.

He said the thieves, who probably struck on the night of October 17, decamped with, among other property, gold worth Rs 1.5 lakh, Rs 25,000 in cash, suits and a Kinetic Honda scooter.

He said a number of burglaries and thefts had occurred in the area over the past six months but no concrete efforts had been made by the police to stop the crimes.Back

Nirmala Singh's animated genius

CHANDIGARH, Oct 20 — In this season of festivities and celebrations, Nirmala Singh's exhibition comes across as a fiesta of colours and animated brilliance. Her 24 works are currently on display at IndusInd Art Gallery, Sector 9.

Besides flowers, landscapes and even ''diyas'' exhibited on the walls, Nirmala Singh also had six of her poems in Hindi plastered for the show. One such poem reads "Ho kar prajavalit, deepak ek karat prajavalit, deep anek". A set of six abstract paintings of flowers is particularly interesting and absorbing.

Her forthcoming engagements include 10 exhibitions sponsored by the North Zone Cultural Centre in 10 different cities.

In this season of festivals, everyone seems to have jumped on to the bandwagon of painting canvases on the theme of Divali like this exhibition.Back



 

Price Watch
Fruit prices stable

CHANDIGARH, Oct 20 — Even as the festive spirit is catching up with the residents, there was no fluctuation in the prices of most of commonly used fruits in the local market during the past four days.

During a survey of the market today, it was found that a kg of pomegranate was still priced at Rs 40-45 in retail and Rs 100 per 3-kg pack in the wholesale market. During the last week, the fruit was available at Rs 50 a kg, but the price has come down with the arrival of fresh crop from Maharashtra.

There was no fluctuation in the prices of any of the three varieties of apple available in the market. If one could had the delicious variety at Rs 25 a kg in retail, the golden variety of the fruit could be had at Rs 40. In the wholesale market these varieties were priced at Rs 250 and Rs 400 per 17-kg pack, respectively. The Kinnaur variety of the fruit was priced at Rs 50 a kg in retail and Rs 500 per 17-kg pack.

Guava was a bit cheaper today. A kg of it, which was priced at Rs 20 just three-four days back, could be had at Rs 15-18 in retail and Rs 10-12 a kg in the wholesale market due to enhanced arrivals in the market from all over the region. There was no change in the price of grapes as a kg of it could be purchased at Rs 70 in retail and Rs 150 per 3 kg-pack in the wholesale market.

Similarly, there was no change in the price of mausambi as it was available at Rs 60-70 a dozen in retail and Rs 125 per 3-dozen in the wholesale market. Orange could be had at Rs 50 a dozen in retail and Rs 400 per 11-dozen pieces.

Banana was available at its old price of Rs 20 a dozen in retail and Rs 120 per 100 pieces in the wholesale market. A piece of pineapple was available at Rs 35 in retail and Rs 25 in the wholesale market. Similarly, a piece of dry coconut could be had at Rs 25, while the green one was priced at Rs 20.Back



 


Harry to lead carrom team

CHANDIGARH, Oct 20 — Tejinder Harry will lead the Chandigarh men's team for the VIIth Federation Cup Carrom Tournament. Ramanpreet Pahwa of Shishu Niketan School, Sector 22, in the boys's section and Eveleen of Mount Carmel School, Sector 46, in the girls' section, will be the captains of the UT teams for the 27th Sub-Junior and Inter-State Carrom Championship to be held at Thiruvananthapuram in Kerala from October 25 to 29, according to Mr Mahesh Sekhri, Secretary of the Chandigarh Carrom Association.

The teams are as follows: Federation Cup (men's) — Gagandeep (National College-41), Ramanpreet (Shishu Niketan-22), Rozerio Sampson (SDP-32). Mr Nirmal Singh and Mr S.P. Dobhal will be the manager and coach, respectively.

Sub-Junior and Inter-State Carrom (boys) — Sumit Chakarvorthy (Mount Carmel-46), Taranpreet (Shishu Niketan-22) and Rahul Nanda (Government Model Senior Secondary School-37). Mr Suraj Kohli and Mr K.S. Patwal will be the manager and coach respectively.

Girls — Eveleen (Mt Carmel-46), Nidhi Patwal (Bhawan Vidyalya-27), Shikha Nanda (GMSS-37), Pallavi Piplani (Mt Carmel-46), Birinder (Mt Carmel-46). Ms Sarabjit Kaur and Mr Mahesh Sekhri will be the manager and coach, respectively.

Women's soccer: Sanjay Football Club, Sector 44, and Khalsa SS Club today moved ahead in the league on the third day of the Chandigarh Senior Women's Football Championship for the Deepak Kapania Trophy being played at Football Stadium in Sector 17. Sanjay Club defeated Dev Samaj College, Sector 45 (A), by three goals while Khalsa Club defeated Government Girls High School, Sector 11, by two goals.

In the match between Sanjay Club and Dev Samaj College, Pinki Sharma and Anita scored goals for Sanjay Club. In the match between Khalsa Club and Government Girls High School, Sector 11, Gurpreet scored the opening goal in the 15th minute. In the second half, Vidushi scored the second goal.

Tomorrow, the first semi-final match will be played between Khalsa Club and YPS Club (Blue), followed by the second semi-final between Dev Samaj College, Sector 45 (A), and Sanjay Club.Back


Varinder's 77 help YPS win

CHANDIGARH, Oct 20 — A fine unbeaten knock of 77 runs by Varinder helped Yadavindra Public School, SAS Nagar, beat St Xavier's School, Sector 44, by 47 runs today in the under-12 section of the Blessed Edmund Rice Cricket Tournament being played here at St John's School, Sector 26.

In other matches of the day, Edmund Rice team-26 defeated Manav Mangal School by 11 runs and John's under-10 team beat Saupin's School by ten wickets.

Brief scores: Edmund Rice XI — 137 for six in 25 overs (Rohan Mittal 21, Aayush Soni 11, Nitish 2 for 26, Sukhwinder 2 for 26); MMS — 126 for 8 in 25 overs (Mohit 20, Nakul 15, Pankaj 12, Ananteshwar 2 for 10, Gaurav Pal 2 for 26).

Saupin's School — 121 all out in 22.5 overs (Sikandar 20, Robin 20, Abhijit Chadha 4 for 6, Devjot Singh 2 for24); John's under-10 — 122 for no loss in 15.4 overs (Ish Dhand 56 n.o., Devjot Singh 22 n.o.)

School volleyball: Manav Mangal School and Government Model High School, Sector 26, won their matches here today in the under-14 section of the UT Inter-School Volleyball Championship for girls being organised by the Education Department of the UT at Shivalik Public School, Sector 41.

GMHS-26 defeated Sharda School, 25-9, 25-5, while MMHS-21 beat SGGS School, Sector 35, 25-10, 25-8.

In another match of this section, Government Girls Senior Secondary School, Sector 8, defeated Government Senior Secondary School, Sector 27, 25-14, 14-25, 25-21.

In the under-17 section, GMHS-26 defeated Manav Mangal-21, 25-10, 25-11, while SGGSS-35 crushed GMSSS-33, 25-8, 25-5. In the under-19 section, GGSSS-8 beat GMSSS-19, 25-15, 25-12, while GMSSS-33 beat GSSS-Dhanas, 25-10, 25-19.

Ajit Karam Singh International Public School, Sector 41, defeated Guru Nanak Public School, Sector 36, 14-0, while SPS-41 beat Government Girls Senior Secondary School, Sector 18, 16-0, today in the under-14 girls' section of the UT Inter-School Basketball Tournament being played at Shivalik Public School, Sector 41.

IS Dev Samaj Girls Senior Secondary School, Sector 21 moved ahead in the under-19 league by beating Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 19, 38-9. Bhawan Vidyalya-27 had a tough time against GNPS-36 before winning, 18-16. GMSSS-16 defeated GGSSS-8, 24-4, in another match of this section.

In the under-17 section of the basketball meet, AKSIPS-41 defeated St Stephen's School, Sector 45, 11-8, while IS Dev Samaj GSSS-21 beat SPS-41, 35-12.

Handball matches: The UT Inter-School Handball Tournament for under-14 girls began today at Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 23-A. Government Girls Senior Secondary School, Sector 20, beat Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 40, 2-1.

SGGSSS-35 defeated Government Senior Secondary School, Sector 23, 13-0, GMSSS-21 defeated GMHS-29, 11-1, and GSSSS-8 blanked out GMSSS-19, 5-0.

Inter-school hockey: The UT Inter-School Hockey Tournament began today at Hockey Stadium in Sector 18 here. In the under-14 section, Government Girls Senior Secondary School, Sector 20, beat SGGSSS-35 by a solitary goal. In another match, Government Girls Senior Secondary School, Sector 18, defeated Government Model High School, Sector 44, also, 1-0.

In the under-17 girls' section, SGGSSS-35 defeated GGSSS-23, 2-0, and GSSS-47 beat Shishu Niketan-22, 3-0.Back
