Mahmood devastates West Indies

SHARJAH, Oct 20 (PTI) — Pakistan rode on medium-pacer Azhar Mahmood’s devastating six-wicket haul to thrash the West Indies by 138 runs to set up a final clash against Sri Lanka in the triangular one-day cricket tournament last night.

Mahmood wrecked the Caribbean innings with a brilliant haul of six for 18 as Pakistan skittled out their listless rivals for 117 in 31.3 overs after hoisting an impressive 255 for five wickets in the last league tie at the Sharjah stadium.

Pakistan, already in the final ahead of yesterday’s match, finished on top of the pool with seven points from three wins and a tie, while the West Indies were knocked out as they finished with just two points from one win and three defeats.

But the result proved perfect for Sri Lanka, who clinched the berth for the October 22 clash as they had three points from a win and the tie.

Middle-order batsman Yousuf Youhana smashed a superb, unbeaten 71 off just 47 balls (3x4, 4x6) after 17-year-old Hasan Raza hit up a patient 77 (120 b, 1x4, 1x6) in a 98-run third wicket stand with burly Inzamam-ul-Haq (61 off 68 balls) as Pakistan youngsters grabbed the chance after skipper Wasim Akram and opener Saeed Anwar were rested today.

Rookie pacemen Mohammed Akram and Shabbir Ahmed then unsettled the Caribbean batsmen at the outset before the 24-year-old Azhar Mahmood ripped through with regular strikes against batsmen desperate fighting for survival.

Skipper Brian Lara (30) cut a desolate figure as he ran out of partners and was the last man out to the 20-year-old off-spinner Shoaib Malik (2/21).

Pakistan, who had crushed the West Indies by 130 runs in their first league tie, were in no mood for any let up and send the last nine wickets tumbling for 62 runs.

Mohammed Akram had opener Sherwin Campbell caught behind by stand-in skipper Moin Khan cheaply, but left-handers Ridley Jacobs (28- 39b, 2x4, 1x6) and Chris Gayle (22) scored 47 quick runs for the second wicket to raise hopes for a fight.

But Mahmood, who claimed his career-best haul, troubled the left-handers with movement off the seam bowling round the wicket, removed Gayle to a reflex catch by Inzamam-ul Haq at point and then bowled Jacobs through the gate to make it 65 for three in the 15th over.

Lara and Shivnarine Chanderpaul (14) tried to hit their way out of trouble, but the latter fell to another fine catch by Inzamam before Mahmood dismissed Ricardo Powell for zero.

Shoaib, Ijaz for Australia tour

SHARJAH, Oct 20 (AFP) — Pakistan’s cricket selectors today picked fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar and recalled Ijaz Ahmed and Mushtaq Ahmed for the upcoming tour of Australia.

Shoaib, who missed the ongoing Sharjah Cup one-day tourney due to a shoulder injury, was picked after passing a strenuous fitness test before the selectors and team officials here.

The 22-year-old was asked to fly in from England to undergo the test ahead of the selection, which was advanced by a day to enable travel formalities to be completed.

The 16-member squad, led by Wasim Akram, flies out from here after Friday’s final against Sri Lanka for three Tests and a triangular one-day series against hosts Australia and arch-rivals India.

The three-member selection committee, headed by Naushad Ali, ignored the imminent release of the judicial commission report on match-fixing and recalled trusted middle-order batsman Ijaz Ahmed and leg-spinner Mushtaq Ahmed.

Five of the six players who were named in Pakistani media reports yesterday as being held guilty by the commission — Akram, Mushtaq, Saeed Anwar, Inzamam-ul Haq and Ijaz — were picked in the touring party.

The only exception was veteran Salim Malik, who was anyway not in contention for a place in the team.

The squad:

Wasim Akram (capt), Moin Khan (vice-captain), Saeed Anwar, Wajahatullah Wasti, Ghulam Ali, Inzamam-ul Haq, Ijaz Ahmed, Yousuf Youhanna, Mohammad Wasim, Abdur Razzaq, Azhar Mahmood, Saqlain Mushtaq, Mushtaq Ahmed, Mohammad Akram, Shoaib Akhtar, Shabbir Ahmed.

Manager: Yawar Saeed. Coach: Richard Pybus.

The report by Judge Qayyum of Lahore High Court has been referred to the country’s President Rafiq Tarrar, chief patron of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), for further action.

“We cannot go by speculative media reports,” Naushad Ali said. “No one has told us not to select a particular player.”

“We have picked the best available team. It is a well-balanced team which is bound to do well in Australia.”

Naushad Ali said the team had been ratified by Javed Zaman, the lone member of the ad-hoc committee running the PCB.

The other member of the ad-hoc panel, Mujeeb-ur Rehman, a close aide of deposed premier Nawaz Sharif, is reported to be under detention after last week’s military coup.

Asked what would happen if President Tarrar recommends action against any player midway through the tour, Naushad Ali said: “We cannot go on ifs and buts.”

The team boasts of six fast bowlers, including 17-year-old pace sensation Shabbir Ahmed, but there was no place for veteran Waqar Younis. Akram, Shoaib and Shabbir will be supported in the new ball attack by Mohammad Akram and all-rounders Abdur Razzaq and Azhar Mahmood.

The selectors also ignored experienced opening batsman Aamir Sohail and included Ghulam Ali as the third opener alongside Anwar and Wajahatullah Wasti.

Mushtaq and wily off-spinner Saqlain, fully recovered from a knee injury, are the two slow bowlers in the side.

The middle-order will be manned by Ijaz, Inzamam, Youhana and the recalled Mohammad Wasim, who will also double up as the reserve ‘keeper to vice-captain Moin Khan.

Akram dismisses match-fixing report

DUBAI, Oct 20 (PTI) — Pakistan cricket captain Wasim Akram has dismissed media reports that a judicial probe into betting and match-fixing charges had recommended life bans and hefty fines on leading players, saying his ‘boys’ were not bothered.

“It does not bother us”, Akram said reacting to Pakistan media reports that the Justice Malik Mohammad Qayyum panel had recommended stiff penalty on top players.

Akram said “speculative media reports” only tended to strengthen the resolve of his team-mates to perform better, in obvious reference to his team’s brilliant run in reaching the final at the tri-nation tournament in Sharjah.

“I have had a word with the Pakistan board in the morning and my worries are over” he told the Khaleej Times”. “The boys are looking forward to the Australian tour. As far as we are concerned, nothing has changed”.

He admitted such reports did affect the players but said “we don’t take it seriously as nothing is official about it”.

The Karachi-based daily “The News” had reported yesterday that the commission’s findings submitted to President Mohammad Rafiq Tarar had recommended life ban and heavy fine on veteran batsman Salim Malik and leg-spinner Mushtaq Ahmed.

The daily claimed the commission had also recommended Akram be stripped of captaincy and that a “close watch should be kept on his activities in the future”.

Justice Qayyum was also for imposing fines ranging from Rs 2 to Rs 5 lakh on Akram, Ijaz Ahmed, Saeed Anwar and Inzamam-ul Haq as he believed there was proof they were not ‘straight’ with their statements, “The News” claimed.

Pakistan team manager Yawar Saeed also dismissed the press report. “I have seen the report on the internet and all I can say is that it is a speculative leak of recommendations. It is not official. Therefore, nothing has changed as far as our forthcoming tour of Australia is concerned,” he said.

“I cannot stop people from speculating. The team will be selected tomorrow,” Saeed, who will also be managing the team in Australia, said.

“Shoiab Akhtar is arriving from London and he will undergo a fitness test in the presence of all three selectors Col Naushad Ali, Rameez Raja and Abdul Raqeeb and team coach Richard Pybus,” he said.

The 23-year-old Akhtar, rated the fastest bowler in the world, withdrew on the eve of the Toronto series against the West Indies last month complaining of shoulder problem and has not played since the May-June World Cup in England.

Saeed said Javed Zaman, member of the PCB ad hoc committee and Col Naushad Ali, director of cricket affairs in Pakistan, were running the board in the absence of the ad hoc committee chairman Mujeebur Rehman.

The whereabouts of Mujeeb, younger brother of Saifur Rahman, who headed the accountability cell before the military coup in Pakistan were unknown, the “Khaleej Times” said.

The manager said the decision not to play Wasim Akram, who apparently had a pulled muscle, and Anwar yesterday in the final league tie against West Indies was taken the night before the match and not due to the adverse media report.

Bad night for England, Germany

PARIS, Oct 20 (AFP) — It was a disastrous night for England and Germany in the European Champions League with all four sides representing the two countries defeated in their matches.

European champions Manchester United saw their 18-match unbeaten run in European football come to an end last night, going down 1-0 to Marseille in France in group D.

The other English side in action Arsenal also saw their European ambitions hit by a 4-2 defeat at Wembley by Spanish champions Barcelona, now assured a place in the next phase.

It was also a bad night for Germany with Bayer Leverkusen going down 4-2 in Ukraine to Dynamo Kyiv while Borussia Dortmund, European champions in 1997, slumped 3-0 at home to Norway’s Rosenborg Trondheim.

Barcelona were playing at a stadium that holds happy memories. Their single success in Europe’s premier club competition was at Wembley in 1992 when an extra-time goal from Ronald Koeman secured a 1-0 win over Italy’s Sampdoria.

Two goals within a minute pur Barcelona in the driving seat with England defender Tony Adams suffering a personal nightmare.

Adams conceded a penalty after 15 minutes which was converted with aplomb by Barca’s Brazilian playmaker Rivaldo and then slipped to let in Luis Enrique to score, as Barcelona took command.

The England defender also missed from five yards with the goal at his mercy, as goalkeeper Francesc Arnau recovered to deny him with a miraculous tip over the bar.

Dutchman Dennis Bergkamp kept Arsenal in the game with his first goal for 12 matches after 43 minutes.

But after 56 minutes Barca’s Portuguese star Luis Figo restored the Catalan side’s two goal advantage and Philip Cocu made it 4-1 to Barca.

Dutchman Marc Overmars grabbed a late consolation for the Londoners.

In the other group B match Fiorentina took command of their match with Sweden’s AIK Solna with two goals in the first half.

It was Argentinian striker Gabriel Batistuta who opened the scoring after five minutes from long range with the ball taking a deflection. And Italian international Enrico Chiesa a close season signing from Parma — bagged a second before another Argentine Abel Balbo wrapped up the points in the second half to make it 3-0 for the Italians, who go second.

Reigning champions Manchester United were again tested by Marseille in their group D clash but this time failed to pull off one of their fabled comebacks, leaving Marseille top of the pool.

Marseille led for much of the encounter between the two teams in Manchester in the previous round of games only for United to prevail with two late goals.

But Marseille, the only French winners of the competition in 1993, did not yield this time. French World Cup winner Robert Pires was foiled by a superb save from United’s Australian goalkeeper Mark Bosnich.

United too had their moments with Roy Keans firing wide after being set up by Andy Cole but on 69 minutes Marseille took the lead.

William Gallas worked a delightful one-two with Stephane Dalmat and lashed a shot past Bosnich.

Austria’s Sturm Graz chalked up their first points of the campaign with a 1-0 win over Croatia Zagreb. The goal was claimed by Tomica Kocijan although Zagreb player Edin Mujcin seemed to get a touch.

In group A Lazio confirmed their supremacy, winning 4-0 in Slovenia against Maribor, Yugoslav dead ball specialist Sinisa Mihajlovic put the Roman club on course with a trademark freekick after 36 minutes.

And five minutes into the second period Simone Inzaghi, brother of Juventus striker Filippo, made it 2-0. Further goals from Yugoslav Dejan Stankovic and another from Inzaghi ended the scoring.

Coupled with defeat in the Ukraine for Bayer Leverkusen this victory leaves Lazio five points clear of the Germans.

It only took Dynamo Kyiv four minutes to take the lead when Vitaly Kossovsky turned in Rebrov’s cross from close range.

After 12 minutes the Germans equalised when German international striker Ulf Kirsten notched a rebound also from point blank range.

But nine minutes before the interval Maksim Shatskikh ensured it was 2-1 to the home team.

Four minutes after the break Oliver Neuville equalised again for Leverkusen but just after the hour mark Olexander Holovko restored Kyiv’s lead and a late goal from Vladislav Vaschuk made it 4-2 to the team that reached the semifinals last season.

It was also a bad day for Germany in group C. Norwegian visitors Rosenborg Trondheim took a 17th minute lead at Borussia Dortmund.

But the Norwegians, who had been top of the standings on goal differences, took the lead in controversial circumstances.

Jan Derek Sorensen appeared to be well offside when he put the visitors ahead.

But it was Sorensen’s night and he made it 2-0 with a superb strike after 58 minutes with Frederik Guttormsen Winsnes grabbing a third. Dortmund’s cause was not helped by the sending-off of Lars Ricken.

Holland’s Feyenoord shared the spoils against Portugal’s Boavista in the other group C match with Jon Dahl Tomasson’s 76th minute strike putting the Dutch side ahead only for a penalty seven minutes later from Romanian Ion Timofte to square the match.

Woodruff upsets Corretja

LYON (France), Oct 20 (AP) — American Chris Woodruff toppled fourth-seeded defending champion Alex Corretja 7-5, 7-6, (7-0) last evening to advance to the quarterfinals of the Lyon Grand Prix Tennis Tournament.

Ranked an unthreatening 65th in the world, Woodruff ended the 10th-ranked Spaniard’s defence of his crown and quest for his first title since the World Championships last year in Hannover.

The victory was a big step in Woodruff’s comeback from a long injury layoff last year.

Woodruff played just one match in 1998 after injuring his knee kicking field goals at an Atlanta high school with compatriot Richey Reneberg.

The American only returned to competition last February and has since been fighting his way back up the rankings, having plunged to an abysmal 1,599 at the start of this year from a career high 29 in 1997.

Woodruff, who has three career titles, is seeking his second tournament victory this season, having won in Newport in July.

American Jim Courier booked his place in the quarterfinals with a 6-3, 3-6, 6-1 victory over ninth-seeded Mark Philippoussis, who recently returned from injury. In another second-round match, 11th-seeded Mariano Zabaleta of Argentina beat Croatia’s Goran Ivanisevic 6-4, 6-4.

Though the 44th-ranked Courier had not played in a tournament since the US Open — taking a six week rest from the tour — Philippoussis was feeling the effects of an even longer break.

Pulling up short with torn knee cartilage against Pete Sampras in the quarterfinals of Wimbledon, the Australian underwent athroscopic surgery that effectively sidelined him for three-and-a-half months.

Philippoussis made his comeback only last week in Singapore, where he went out in second round.

Americans had similar success in first-round action, with Jeff Tarango and Jan-Michael Gambill easily brushing aside their opponents in straight sets.

Tarango defeated Mark Knowles of the Bahamas 6-4, 6-1, and Gambill trounced Slovakia’s Jan Kroslak 6-1, 6-2.

Dutchman Jan Siemerink beat Morocco’s Hicham Arazi 6-3, 7-6 (7-4).

MOSCOW: Nadejda Petrova, a 17-year-old Russian, produced a major upset late last evening as she beat sixth-seeded Conchita Martinez of Spain 6-1, 6-4 to advance to the second round of the Kremlin Cup. Petrova, ranked 123rd in the world, took the lead in the second game of the first set and then again broke Martinez in the sixth game to stay ahead 5-1. She fired an ace to take the first set.

In the tough second set, the Spaniard double-faulted in the fifth game as the Russian boosted her game to go ahead 3-2. She then fired two aces but Martinez equalised 3-3. Martinez’s nerves broke in the ninth game when down love-40; she fought to one point back but double-faulted on the next serve.

Cheered by the home crowd, Petrova, the 1998 French Open junior champion, held her serve to take revenge for a defeat in the second round at last year’s Kremlin Cup, when she lost to Martinez 0-6, 0-6.

In a tough all-Russian battle that put together two Russian Fed Cup team-mates, Tatjana Panova downed Elena Dementieva 7-6 (9-7), 1-6, 7-5. In the second round, Panova, a wild card for the tournament, will meet fourth-seed Nathalie Tauziat of France.

Earlier yesterday, fifth-seeded Dominique Van-Roost of Belgium defeated Patty Schnyder of Switzerland 7-5, 6-2.

After trading serves early in the first set, both players held until the eleventh game when Schnyder came back from love-40 on her serve only to send a forehand into the net on Van Roost’s advantage.

Sunil, Sandeep Kirtane ousted

MUMBAI, Oct 20 (UNI) — It was a poor day for the Indians as only two players, out of the seven who had made it to the second round yesterday, crashed out of the $ 25,000 ITF Satellite tennis circuit first leg here today.

Barring sixth-seeded Vinod Sridhar and lucky loser Manoj Mahadevan, all the Indians in the fray including recently-crowned national hardcourt men’s champion Sunil Kumar, and Sandeep Kirtane bowed out in the prequarterfinals of the first leg.

While Sunil lost to fourth-seeded Per Thornadtsson of Sweden 1-6, 4-6, Sandeep, who yesterday ousted top-seeded compatriot Prahlad Srinath, went down fighting to Matthis Kempe-Bergman (Swe) 5-7, 4-6.

Others bowing out in the second round today included Vishal Uppal who lost to third-seeded Radim Zitko (Cze) 4-6, 3-6, Vasudeva Reddy who was beaten by fifth-seeded Tom Chicoine (USA) 1-6, 4-6 and Rohan Bopanna who was defeated by Thomas Messmer of Germany 1-6, 6-7 (6-8).

Vinod, one of the two successful Indians making it to the last eight stage, had to face some anxious moments before he beat Andrei Youzhny of Russia 6-1, 6-7 (0-7), 7-5 to enter the quarterfinals. The other successful Indian, Manoj, also fought a valiant battle, scoring a come-from-behind victory over Niko Karagiannis (Gre) to come through 1-6, 6-4, 6-3.

The last qurterfinalist was another lucky loser Kunj Mahadevan (USA) who breezed past Josef Nesticky (Cze) 6-1, 6-2 in a match which lasted for around an hour.

The sixth-seeded Sridhar had to fight for nearly two hours as he beat Andrei. After a good start, easily winning the first set (6-1), he lost the second set in a tie-break. The Indian displayed remarkable strength and staying power to clinch the decider (7-5), warding off a stiff opposition from the Russian.

Manoj today ousted Niko, who yesterday accounted for second-seeded Syed Fazaluddin (Ind), in one hour and 45 minutes. The Indian displayed his remarkable fighting power as after tamely losing the first set (1-6), he pulled up his socks to win the next two sets and a quarterfinal berth.

After losing his first serve in the second set, a rejuvenated Manoj bounced back to break Niko in the sixth and the 10th games to take the set (6-4) and take the match to a decider third set.

The final set saw the players holding on to their serves until the eighth game where Manoj managed a break to go up 5-3. Then he served out the match.

Results (pre-quarterfinal): Radim Zitko b Vishal Uppal 6-4, 6-3; Vinod Sridhar b Andrei Youzhny 6-1, 6-7 (0-7), 7-5; Tom Chicoine b Vasudeva Reddy 6-1, 6-4; Per Thornadtsson b Sunil Kumar 6-1, 6-4; Thomas Messmer b Rohan Bopanna 6-1, 7-6 (8-6); Manoj Mahadevan b Niko Karagiannis 1-6, 6-4, 6-3; Matthis Kempe-Bergmann b Sandeep Kirtane 7-5, 6-4; Kunj Majumdar b Josef Nesticky 6-1, 6-2.

Ali was only joking

NEW YORK, Oct 20 (AFP) — Muhammad Ali, the fighter who once floated like a butterfly and stung like a bee, has said he was only joking about a return to boxing, saying: “It was just me being me.”

Ali wrote in Newsweek magazine that he was going to train for a 15-round exhibition despite suffering from Parkinson’s disease.

“It was news that proved all-too believable for fight fans but was in reality too good to be true,” Ali said in a statement yesterday after his magazine comments sparked global interest.

“Let me tell you something that will shock the Earth,” the 57-year-old heavyweight legend wrote. “I’m going to train and get in really good shape, lose 35 pounds, and a do an exhibition in Madison Square Garden with two or three contenders. I will dance for 15 rounds and whip them. I haven’t forgotten.”

Ali, who first won the heavyweight crown from Sonny Liston in 1964, last fought in a 10-round loss to Trevor Berbick in 1981.

Ali’s speech and movement has been limited by the degenerative nerve disease, which has not dimmed his intelligence but has limited his muscle control. Ali’s wife Lonnie travels with him and often speaks on his behalf.

Absolutely false charges: IABF
Tribune News Service

SHIMLA, Oct 20 — The Indian Amateur Boxing Federation has said that the allegations of mismanagement of the 4th National Boxing Championships held recently here were “unfounded and motivated”.

In a joint statement here today, Mr A.K. Mattoo, president, Indian Amateur Boxing Federation, and Rajesh Bhandari, secretary, Indian Amateur Boxing Federation, expressed deep concern over the “unfounded criticism” of the championship by some “disgruntled individual claiming to represent the views of the boxers, officials and public figures”.

The allegations and observations made in the report based on the statement of one individual are “absolutely false, motivated and aimed at maligning the federation”, which had managed the championship very well with no complaints whatsoever arising.

The championship was conducted strictly according to the rules and all the judges and referees were qualified. The scoring was fully computerised and not even a single complaint was received about any decision.

The championship was conducted under the command of the ring official commission and chairman Mr A.C. Nohorona, who was himself present throughout the championship.

As far as introduction of women boxing is concerned, world boxing federation (AIBA) has already included it in the games and first women’s world boxing championship had already been held last year in which 56 countries participated.

Eight states in India have already organised state championships and first official women national boxing will be held in Delhi next year. Only demonstration bouts were held. The women boxers were provided full protection equipment of high quality. The IABF has already included women boxing its long-term development plan for period 1999-2000 and it is preposterous to say that the event is being introduced in a huff without taking care of statutory rules and provisions.

J&K in deep trouble
From Our Sports Reporter

PATIALA, Oct 20 — Jammu and Kashmir (J and K) were in deep trouble at 15 for five at draw of stumps on day one of the North Zone Inter State Cooch-Behar Cricket Tournament league match, being played at the Dhruv Pandove Stadium here today.

Earlier, batting first, Punjab virtually massacred the J and K bowling attack by piling up a massive 375 for 3 in their first essay. The main architects of the hosts formidable batting display were openers Munish Sharma (173) and Ravneet Rickey (109) before skipper Yuvraj Singh put an end to the misery of the J and K bowlers by applying the declaration the moment Munish Sharma was stumped going for a lofted shot.

While Ravneet Rickey was more resilient in his approach, the other opener Munish Sharma displayed shades of flamboyance to play an impressive innings.

Even as Ravneet Rickey, after putting on 209 runs for the first wickety, looked all set to farm the bowlers, he was out to a ridiculous shot, trying to flick a ball pitched far away from the leg stump. The ball, after ricocheting off Rickey’s left pad, clipped the leg stump bail to end a superb innings.

At the end of a hard and long days play, the only Jammu and Kashmir bowler who commanded some respect was off-spinner skipper Sohail Songhoi who kept on experimenting, despite the blitzkrieg launched by the hosts batsmen, to finish with 2 for 63.

Brief scores:

Punjab (Ist innings): 375 for 3 (Munish Sharma 173, Ravneet Rickey 109, Yuvraj 54. Gaganinder Garry 26 n.o. Sohail 2 for 63).

J and K (Ist innings): 15 for 5 (Amit Uniyal 3 for 7. Gagandeep Singh 2 for 8).
