Govt 'ready for' debate on Bofors
NEW DELHI, Oct 27 — The Congress attempt to keep the focus on its demand for the deletion of the late Rajiv Gandhi’s name from the CBI chargesheet in the Bofors case was today foiled in the Lok Sabha by Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee who said the government was ready for a thorough discussion on the issue. He taunted the Congress for "withdrawing" from the discussion.

LS passes reservation Bill
NEW DELHI, Oct 27 — The Lok Sabha today unanimously passed the Constitution (84th Amendment) Bill, 1999, providing for the extension of the reservation policy for another ten years, beginning January 25, 2000.

Pope's visit: Government condemns protests
NEW DELHI, Oct 27 — Even as the government today allayed fears of any disruption of the visit of Pope John Paul II next month due to planned protests of the Sangh Parivar, the Catholic Church described the VHP’s demand for an apology by the Pope for alleged atrocities on Hindus in Goa during Portuguese rule as "distasteful".

NEW DELHI, Oct 27 — The week-long nationwide transporters' strike was called off tonight. The strike was called off following a settlement between the government and All-India Motor Transport Congress, which spearheaded the agitation, an official announcement said.
