Army rescues 5 hostages

SRINAGAR, Sept 4 — Army commandos tonight rescued five security personnel, including two Intelligence Bureau officials, after killing three Pakistani mercenaries, holding them hostage in a government building in the frontier district of Kupwara, official spokesman said.

New Delhi, Sept 4 — The first phase of polling for the 13th general election will be held tomorrow with about 161 million electorate expected to vote amidst tight security for 145 seats in 11 states and five union territories.

Naxals gun down Asst I-G in AP
HYDERABAD, Sept 4 — In a daring attack on the eve of first phase of elections in Andhra Pradesh, four unidentified gunmen today shot dead Assistant Inspector General of Police Umesh Chandra, his gunman and his driver when their car stopped at a traffic signal in the heart of the city, prompting the government to sound a red alert throughout the state.

Nine die as bus falls into khud
BILASPUR, Sept 4 — At least nine persons were killed and 22 were injured seriously when a Punjab Roadways bus rolled 200 feet down into Gambrola khud on the Kiratpur-Mandi national highway, 14 km from here, today.

3 arrested for slaying priest
BHUBANESWAR, Sept 4 — Three persons have been arrested in connection with the killing of Roman Catholic priest Arul Doss in Mayurbhanj district in Orissa last Thursday and some bows, arrows and lathis used in the crime seized, Minister of State for Home Prasad Harichandan said here today.
