 SRINAGAR, July 9 — The much-awaited meeting of the working committee of the National Conference is to be held here tomorrow to take stock of the situation arising out of the rejection of the resolution on the restoration of autonomy by the Centre.

Vajpayee meets Thackeray
MUMBAI, July 9 — Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee today had a meeting with Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray at Raj Bhavan in the backdrop of the discontent in the Sena camp over portfolios allotted to the party’s ministers in the NDA government.

Pact to end Fiji crisis signed

SUVA, July 9 — Coup leader George Speight and military commander Commodore Frank Bainimarama signed an agreement today to end Fiji’s seven-week hostage crisis. Under the deal, Speight’s 27 hostages, including deposed Prime Minister Mahendra Chaudhry, will be released on Thursday before a meeting of influential tribal chiefs. The rebels also will turn in their weapons.

ISLAMABAD, July 9 — The Pakistani police today continued its guard around the Lahore residence of the deposed Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, confining his wife to the house and frustrating her rally against the military regime, witnesses said.
