30 Indians held hostage, freed
LABASA (Fiji), July 30 — Fijian nationalist supporters of jailed coup leader George Speight held at least 30 ethnic Indians hostage in a remote farming district today, but released them after other villagers intervened.

SHIMLA, July 30 — The plane crash at Kathabai in Mandi district in which five persons died has once again exposed the vulnerability of aerial flights on the Chandigarh-Bhuntar route to mishaps.

Hizbul names 3-member team for talks
MUZZAFARABAD, July 30 — Pakistan-based militant group Hizbul Mujahideen today named a three-member team which it would like to be present in proposed negotiations between the Indian Government and “Kashmiri leadership.”

BCCI report on code delayed
 Guilty will have "records erased"
 NEW DELHI, July 30 — Those found guilty in the match-fixing\betting scandal may be punished by erasing their records from the books and taking back their awards. Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) president A C Muthiah told reporters here today that the BCCI was suggesting such a clause to be included in the code of conduct which is being finalised by a board sub-committee.

US sanctions may go by September
NEW DELHI, July 30 — The US Government has indicated that the sanctions imposed against India in the wake of the 1998 nuclear tests will be withdrawn before the September visit of Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee to that country, convener of the Indian American Friendship Council Adish C. Aggarwala said.

 AMRITSAR, July 30 — The Akali Dal (Amritsar) president, Mr Simranjit Singh Mann, has said the Punjab Chief Minister and Shiromani Akali Dal president, Mr Parkash Singh Badal, has surrendered to the ruling BJP on the issue of inclusion of Udham Singh Nagar with the new hill state of Uttaranchal by ignoring the interests of the Sikhs in that area.

PANTNAGAR, July 30 — When newsmen confronted the Union Defence Minister, Mr George Fernandes, on the fate of Udham Singh Nagar at Pantnagar airport, his answer was that he was happy to meet a cross-section of the people and did not agree that the committee to determine the mood of the people was paying a visit when the Bill was already in Parliament. And the committee would meet and decide what it had to say.
