Guns fall silent in Kashmir
High alert sounded
JAMMU, Nov 27 — Guns fell silent late this evening as the ceas efire announced by the Prime Minister came into effect today. Official sources said Lieut-Gen H.M. Khanna had conveyed strict instructions to his field commanders to honour the Prime Minister’s commitment. The instructions had also gone to the BSF.

 WASHINGTON, Nov 27 — Republican George W. Bush proclaimed himself as the president-elect of the United States shortly after Florida certified him Sunday night as winner of the presidential election from the state, even as lawyers for Democratic candidate Al Gore filed lawsuits today contesting the official presidential election result in Florida.

Sporadic violence during bandh
NEW DELHI, Nov 27 — The Delhi bandh called today by the industrial workers and owners, to protest against the closure of 1.21 lakh units in non-conforming areas, was by and large peaceful with minor incidents of stone throwing, lobbing of tear gas shells and police resorting to lathicharge to quell the protest in some parts of the Capital.

Shifting of units: MPs close ranks
NEW DELHI, Nov 27 — The Lok Sabha was adjourned twice today after members, cutting across party lines, closed ranks in protest against the shifting of polluting industries from residential areas of the Capital.

Dhumal weans away rebel MLA
Bid to woo minister fails
SHIMLA, Nov 27 — Even though the Chief Minister, Mr P.K. Dhumal, was able to wean away dissident MLA, Des Raj, the threat to his government remained as another minister, Mr Ram Lal Markandey, today extended support to the rebels, demanding that the PWD Minister, Mr Mohinder Singh, be removed from the Cabinet.

AMBALA, Nov 27 — Director General of Haryana Police SPS Rathore was today personally present in the court of the Special Magistrate for CBI cases in Haryana, Mr A K Tyagi, when the hearing in the Ruchika case was adjourned for November 29.

HC issues notice to Bibi
CHANDIGARH, Nov 27 — Mr Justice Surinder Singh Nijjar of the Punjab and Haryana High Court today issued notice to the CBI and the SGPC President, Bibi Jagir Kaur, for December 13 to show cause as to why anticipatory bail granted to her in the Harpreet Kaur death case should not be cancelled as per the allegations levelled by Kamaljit Singh.
