SC reprieves commuters, reprimands

New Delhi, April 4
A three-Judge Bench of the Supreme Court headed by the Chief Justice, Dr A. S. Anand, today described as “highly objectionable” the reportedly defiant statements of the Delhi Chief Minister and the Transport Minister in regard to the court’s order of March 26 for conversion of all commercial vehicles to CNG. The court directed the government to issue provisional permits to transport operators till April 14.

Anandgarh panel files caveat
Chandigarh, April 4
The Anandgarh Hatao Sanjhi Sangharsh Committee has filed a caveat before the Supreme Court apprehending that the Punjab Government might move the court against the Punjab and Haryana High Court judgement of March 28 in which, it had quashed the notification for the proposed township of Anandgarh located in the north west of Chandigarh.

Former Chairman of the Central Board of Excise and Customs B. P. Verma was today suspended from government service, two days after the CBI arrested him on charges of corruption.

40 charred to death in bus mishap
Salem, April 4
In a gruesome accident, 40 persons were charred to death when a state-owned bus in which they were travelling caught fire in an head-on collision with a tanker lorry, which later hit a diesel tanker, at Vaikuntam near Sankagiri in Salem district of Tamil Nadu tonight.
