Conviction of Benazir, Zardari set aside
Benazir Bhutto, exiled former Prime Minister of PakistanIslamabad, April 6
Pakistan’s Supreme Court today set aside corruption conviction against former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto and her husband, Asif Ali Zardari, and ordered a retrial. Ms Bhutto, living abroad in self-exile, and Zardari, jailed in Pakistan since 1996 on other charges, had appealed against a 1999-conviction by a special accountability court that sentenced them to five years in jail and fined them $8.6 million for accepting kickbacks.

Musharraf ready for talks on Kashmir
New Delhi, April 6
Declaring that he would be “flexible” in a bid to resolve the Kashmir issue, Pakistan’s military ruler Gen Pervez Musharraf, has said India and Pakistan should begin dialogue on Kashmir and all other issues without any conditions.

Officials of the USA are said to be on their way to Kashmir to motivate APHC leaders to accept at least the first round of talks with the Government of India for which a formal invitation was made yesterday.

Former Deputy Prime Minister and former Chief Minister of Haryana Devi Lal died of cardiac arrest in the Cardiac Coronary Unit of a hospital here this evening. He was 86.

Govt to review allotment
 Petrol station file of George’s wife missing
New Delhi, April 6
The government today said it would review the allotment of a petrol station to Ms Lily George, wife of V. George, private secretary to Opposition leader Sonia Gandhi, against whom the CBI has registered a case for allegedly possessing assets disproportionate to known sources of income, even as the file pertaining to her case was ‘missing’ from the Petroleum Ministry.

Jaswant invites Bush to India
Washington, April 6
In a significant development, the External Affairs Minister, Mr Jaswant Singh, today had an unscheduled meeting with the US President Mr George W. Bush, at the White House as Washington declared that it would engage New Delhi at “every level.”

Meham case goes to CBI
Haryana lax in action on Saikia report: HC
Chandigarh, April 6
Coming down heavily on Haryana Government functionaries for their laxity to take action on the report submitted by Saikia Commission of Inquiry which probed the circumstances leading to the death of Amir Singh, an Independent candidate for the Meham Assembly byelections in 1990, the Punjab and Haryana High Court, in a significant judgement, has entrusted the entire case to the Central Bureau of Investigation.

SOG team questions ultras
Srihargobindpur, April 6
A team of the special operations group (SOG) and the joint interrogation centre (JIC), Jammu and Kashmir, today visited Batala and Srihargobindpur to interrogate four arrested ISI-trained Kashmiri terrorists. The team was led by Inspector Shahin Parveen, the only woman officer of the elite SOG fighting against terrorists in trouble-torn Rajouri.
