Abhinav Bindra does city
proud Chandigarh, October 4 In his fledgling career, Abhinav has already competed in the Olympic Games (Sydney), 11 World Cups, two European Circuits, Commonwealth Games, SAF Games, Commonwealth Shooting, World Shooting, Oceania and Asian Shooting Championships, winning 10 gold, 10 silver and three bronze medals for the country. He is also the national champion in both the senior and junior categories for the past four years, capturing over 30 gold medals. Though the Arjuna Award has come as a timely boost to his promising career, Abhinav is still searching for that elusive sponsor who would foot the bills for his enormous coaching expenses so that he can concentrate on the business of training to realise his ambition of winning an Olympic medal without any hindrance. The year 2001 was very successful for Abhinav as he has so far captured six gold, four silver and two bronze medals in 12 competitions in the European Circuit, the Swiss Open Championship and a world record at the World Cup in Munich along with the first ever medal at this level for the country. In the Commonwealth Shooting Championship in Britain in August, he captained the Indian team, and shot down gold in the men’s 10M rifle team event, breaking the meet as well as the Commonwealth record in the process. Abhinav belongs to that elite group of shooters in the world whose number is very miniscule, and who are capable of bigger deeds, only if he finds the right backer to take care of his financial and technical requirements. |

Dharna by govt, MC
employees Chandigarh, October 4 The dharna was organised to seek implementation of their long-pending demands, including those which had reportedly been accepted by the Administration. The peaceful protesters were agitated after they were denied a hearing with the Home Secretary, Mr R.S. Gujaral, and immediately moved towards the barricades put up at Matka Chowk. As their march was not scheduled, a police posse was called to not allow them passing past the barricades. The Committee alleged that they were forced to make an unscheduled march as their leadership was asked to hand over their memorandum to the Personal Assistant of the Home Secretary, which they refused. After an hour of protest, they were allowed to meet the Home Secretary, who was said to have agreed to look into their demand for bonus to Chandigarh Transport Undertaking workers, the committee president, Mr Balkishan said. He added that Mr Gujral had asked the Director of the CTU to put up the file in this regard. The meeting between the representatives of the committee and Mr Gujaral ended in a deadlock, with unions pressing for implementation of their 23-point charter of demands, claiming they were Central Government employees. Mr Gujaral said their demands could only be accepted if Punjab implemented these. The committee gave the UT Administration 15 days’ time till October 19, Mr Balkishan said. He said the committee would decide its next course of action on October 9. Condemning the economic policies of the Central Government, the co-convener of the committee, Mr Rakesh Kumar, said the decision of the Central Government to reduce the number of employees by 10 per cent was unacceptable workers of 31 organisations participated in the protest. Speakers at the dharna criticised the non-implementation of the judgement of the Supreme Court on equal pay for equal work. They demanded application of this rule in terms of DA, house rent, ACCA and other allowances for daily wagers. The demand charter had demands of all organisation participating in the dharna. The agitation was not joined by the Electricity Workers Union and a couple of medical staff

representations against delimitation Panchkula, October 4 The Panchkula Residents Welfare Federation has objected to the constitution of a committee by the Haryana Government. It has alleged that at the time of the constitution of the committee representatives of public were ignored. Four non-official members have been included in the committee in a “pick and choose manner”. The consideration of objections by such a committee would merely be an eyewash. According to the federation officials, a welfare committee had filed a writ petition in the Punjab and Haryana High Court. The court has granted stay against the notification issued by the Haryana Government. The petition urged the court to set aside the notification. The federation also alleged that the Government did not publish any map with the notification . So residents of Panchkula were at their wits’ end as they did not know whether their area fall in the municipal area or not. The local unit of the BJP charged the District Administration with not consulting representatives of political parties and residents welfare associations before the delimitation of wards. Its representation further stated that the district administration had ignored all mandatory norms and only a few persons belonging to a political parties were consulted on the issue. The party unit alleged that the basic sectoral concept was ignored . It alleged that Sector 4 had been divided into four wards. Similar was the case of sectors 9, 10, 11, 12, 12-A, 14, 15 and 2. It stated the proposed delimitation was vague in certain respects. The objections raised in other representations are also of similar nature. The Deputy Commissioner listened to all objections and promised to do whatever she could do within the framework of rules. |
