Computer centre inaugurated

Ludhiana, October 5
A computer centre for students was inaugurated here yesterday at Government Model Senior Secondary School, Punjab Agricultural University.

Addressing students, Dr K.S. Aulakh, Vice Chancellor, PAU, said computer awareness had become a necessary part of education. He applauded the efforts by the Punjab Government to launch the programme for students at minimal charges.

Ms Usha Sidhu, District Education Officer (Secondary), speaking on the occasion, said students should strive hard for good results. She said students should shun the practice of copying and show honesty in their activities.

Mr Ajaib Singh Chahal, president, Parent Teachers’ Association, said two new sports rooms have also been constructed in the school for keeping equipment and accommodating visiting players. He said more welfare activities were in the offing.

Several students were given prizes for their performance in sports and academics. These included Simarnjeet Pal Singh, international basketball player, Amritpal Singh for shot put and long jump, and Gurbir Singh, national-level winner in athletics. In academics, Mahesh Chand Singh received the prize for standing first in Science group of Class XII, Kapil Dev in Commerce group, Sangeeta Rani in Arts group and Amrinder Kaur in vocational group. Nancy, topper of Class X, and Amit Sharma, topper of Class VIII, also received prizes.

A short cultural programme was also held in which students presented shabad gayan, followed by a welcome song and Punjabi folk songs. Ms Gurdip Kaur, Principal, congratulated the prize winners. Ms Gurcharan K. Kochhar and Ms Anoop Passi, both teachers, coordinated the programme.

Koshish-2001 opens

Ludhiana, October 5
Koshish-2001, an inter-class cultural festival of the PCTE, Ludhiana, was inaugurated today by Mr Sikandar Singh Maluka, Minister for Power, Punjab. Mr Baldev Singh Mann, Administrative Member, PSEB, Patiala, presided over the function.

In his inaugural address, Mr Maluka said it was really heartening that the PCTE was providing good management and technical opportunities for the students in the region. He appreciated academic as well as extra-curricular achievements by the college students. Regarding the requirements of uninterrupted power supply to the college, Mr Maluka promised that this would be done in a few days.

Mr Maluka said that private sector initiators were the key factors for growth of technical education in Punjab by citing the example of the Punjab College of Technical Education as a private institution which focuses on over all development, research and co-curricular activities.

Dr K.N.S. Kang, Director of college, thanked the guests for sparing their valuable time for the function.
