Seminar on liver diseases

Alcohol and smoking are the major factors in damaging liver. This was the consensus reached at a one-day conference organised by the Department of Hepatology, PGI here today.

Addressing the delegates, Prof B.N. Tandon, a former Head of the Department of Gastroenterology of the All-India Institute of Medical Sciences, emphasised that there was need of a full-fledged department of hepatology in leading medical institutions and big hospitals. Prof Tondon was also the guest of honour.

The Director of the PGI, Prof S.K. Sharma, was chief guest at the seminar.

Prof Y.K. Chawla, head of the Hepatology Department of the PGI, announced that this was the first conference of the series of continuing medical education jointly organised by the PGI and AIIMS. The next conference would be held at AIIMS in October next year. It would be a single-theme conference on liver cancer.

Prof S.K. Panda from AIIMS discussed he recent advancement which could lead to the development of vaccine in the near future.

Prominent among those who spoke at the seminar were Prof M.P. Sharma, Prof Shiv K. Sarin, Prof Subrat K. Acharya, Prof Premashish Kar, Dr Randhir Sud, Dr Pradeep Chowbey, Col Paramjit Singh Dhote, Col A.C. Anand, Dr Siddhartha Datta Gupta, Dr Subrat Panda, from Delhi, Dr Gour Choudhuri and Dr Rakesh Aggarwal from Lucknow, Dr Sameer Shah from Mumbai and Dr Ramesh Roop Rai from Jaipur.

The seminar included discussion on the treatment and recent advances on hepatitis B, C, and E viruses, apart from the latest advancement in the treatment of live tumors and gall bladder cancer. Recent developments like liver regeneration by using stem cells were also highlighted.

Combat TB systematically’

Dr B.K. Sharma, former Director of the PGI, today underlined the need for a comprehensive plan to systematically combat tuberculosis.

Inaugurating a scientific symposium on “Recent advances in management of tuberculosis”, organised jointly by Medicos Centre, Chandigarh, in collaboration with Becton Kickinson India, Dr Sharma noted that one-third of the population of the world was suffering from the TB. Tuberculosis was a common killer disease which had been worsened by the spread of AIDS.

Dr D. Behra, Additional Professor of Pulmonary Medicines and Joint MS, PGI, who chaired the symposium, stressed on the government role in case detection, short-term treatment of sputum positive cases and training of health workers.

Dr Poonamjit Kaur, Consultant, Medicos Centre, Chandigarh, spoke on her experiences of rapid diagnosis in tuberculosis. Mr Sidhharth Prantik, Application Specialist, Becton Dickinson India Ltd., laid stress on utilising latest tools of testing to ensure timely and effective treatment of tuberculosis.

Naturopath treats asthmatic patients

SAS Nagar, October 7
As many as 200 patients were given traditional medicine for asthma at a camp organised by a naturopath, Dr H.S. Chawla, at Singh Saheedan Gurdwara, Sohana, here today. Dr Chawla used a mixture of acupressure, magneto therapy and traditional Indian herbs to treat his patients.

An on-the-spot demonstration to do excercise for asthmatic patients was given by the naturopath. Dr Chalwa, a non-resident Indian (NRI), who treats patients with a technique of naturopathy, said, “I do not need money. God had given me enough to live comfortably. I just want to serve humanity”. He claims to have treated over 20,000 asthmatic patients with his medicines.

Dev Samaj cagers win opener

The third Ishwar Shriman Prize-money Invitation Basketball Tournament for Girls began in the Sector 21 IS Dev Samaj Girls Senior Secondary School here today after inauguration by the local MP, Mr Pawan Kumar Bansal.

Mr Bansal promised to help in renovating the concrete basketball court of the school and praised the tournament organisers for promoting this sport. Those present there included Mr B.B. Behl, President of the Chandigarh Territorial Congress Committee, Ms Swadesh Sharma, Secretary of Dev Samaj and Ajinder Kaur, winner of Arjuna Award.

Ms Sumati Kanwar, Principal of the school, said prize money had been introduced for the first time in this tournament. Teams of Kapurthala, Gidderbaha, Hoshiarpur, Ludhiana, Panchkula and Chandigarh are participating in this tournament and have been divided into two pool of three teams each.

In today’s matches, Dev Samaj Club-21 beat Gidderbaha, 47-21, after leading, 31-8, at halftime. The tall number seven of the club dominated the visitors.

In another match, Kapurthala beat Panchkula, 37-4, after leading, 15-4, at halftime. Earlier, Ludhiana beat Kapurthala, 46-35, after leading 27-17 at halftime. Those who scored most points for the winners included Manpreet (18), Kamaljeet (16), Taranjeet (6). For the losers, Reena scored 17 points, Mala seven and Pooja six.

In another match, Kotkapura beat Dev Samaj Club-21, 46-42, with the halftime score being 23-14 in favour of the winners. Those who scored most points for the winners included Surinder Kaur (15), Kiranpreet Kaur (15), Paramjeet Kaur (11). For the losers, Shveta scored 15 points, Prabhjot Kaur 10 and Manpreet Kaur six.

Saroj in semis

Saroj Chandel, top seed in the women’s section of the ninth Chandigarh State Carrom Tournament, had a tough match against Bhanu Jain in the quarterfinals of the meet in the Sector 45 St Stephen’s School here today, but she won, eventually. The others in this section who sailied into the last four included Anjali Negi, Sushila Prasad and Veena Dumra. The semi-finalists in the men’s section are Taranpreet Pahwa, Ravinder, Harmanpreet and Piyush Sood.

Special Olympics

The two-day ninth Zonal Special Olympics will begin in the Sector 7 Sports Complex here tomorrow with 18 schools of the region taking part in this meet. Lieut-Gen J.F.R. Jacob (retd), Governor of Punjab, will inaugurate the meet tomorrow morning.

Athletics meet

The Sector 28 St Soldier’s International School was the overall winner in the boy’s section and the Sector 40 Sharda Sarvhitkari School was the overall winner in the girls’ section of the CBSE Athletics Meet that concluded in the Sector 7 Sports Complex here yesterday. In the under-19 section of the meet, Sandeep of the Sector 41 Shivalik Public School and Sunil of the Sector 4 Satluj Public School of Panchkula were declared the best athletes. In the girls’ section, Shalini of the Sector 40 Sharda Sarvhitkari School was declared the best athlete. The others who were declared the best athletes were as follows: Under-16 (boys) — Manoj (SPS-41); girls — Domingo (Sharda Sarvhitkari 40); Under-14 (boys) — Sunil (St Soldier’s-28); girls — Neha (St Soldier’s-28).

Cricket tourney

The Sector 27 Coaching Centre defeated Elite Club by 15 runs to win the First Cricket Tournament organised by the Uttaranchal Sports and Culture Association, here today. Amit Bhardwaj was given the ‘man of the series’ award, while Rajinder Singh was declared the best batsman of the tournament and Kanwar Singh the best bowler. Mr Harmohan Dhawan, a former Union minister, and Mr Devinder S. Babla, General Secretary of the Chandigarh Vikas Manch, were the chief guests at the awards distribution ceremony.

Brief scores: CC-27 — 207 all out (Ravinder Malik 44, Hemant 42, Balwinder Singh Sr 29, Kanwar 4 for 35, Amit Bhardwaj 3 for 37); Elite CC — 192 all out (Raman 39, Amit 33, Vikas Bhardwaj 27, Mukesh 2 for 16, Mohinder 2 for 31).

LIC XI win

LIC XI beat Chandigarh Youth XI by six wickets in the cricket tournament for the DP Azad Trophy on Gursagar Grounds today. In the other matches of the day, High Court Cricket Club beat Mohali Gymkhana Club by 65 runs, the ICC defeated Sun Cricket Club of SAS Nagar by six wickets.

In another match, international cricketer Dinesh Mongia scored 42 runs and took two wickets for 23 runs to help Chetna Club beat Pari Club by 49 runs.

Arjun, Aarti declared best shooters

Chandigarh, October 7
Arjun Pratap and Aarti Mehta were declared best shooters among men and women sections, respectively, in the 26th Chandigarh State Shooting Championships which concluded here today at the Pataili Ki Rao Shooting Ranges, Sector 25. Mr M. Ramsekhar, Deputy Commissioner, UT, was the chief guest and gave away the prizes. He promised that with the handing over of Sector 25 range to the Chandigarh police, the range would have better environment for shooting. Mr B.C. Gupta, President of the Chandigarh Rifle Association, said he was hopeful of a better performance from the city shooters for whom all kinds of necessary facilities were being targeted.

Earlier, Holinder Singh of the Chandigarh police who created a new meet record was applauded for his stupendous performance in this meet. The highest score in the air rifle (ISSF) junior women was shot by Prabhleen Chauhan at 364/400 while best score in air rifle OS (NR) junior men by Sarabjit Singh at 314/400. The best score in air pistol sub-junior women was shot by Amrinder Kaur Sangha at 314/400.

C.M. Munjal is honorary secretary

Mr C.M. Munjal, member of the Bar Council of Punjab and Haryana, was today appointed honorary secretary of the council.

He succeeded Mr P.S.Hundal who submitted his resignation for personal reasons.

A press note issued by the Bar Council said a resolution had been adopted that it would enforce rule 36 of the Bar Council of India prohibiting advocates from soliciting work or publicity, directly or indirectly, through circulars, advertisements, giving interviews not warranted by personal relations, furnishing or inspiring newspaper comments or producing photographs to be published in connection with cases in which he has been engaged or concerned.

The Bar Council decided to initiate proceedings of professional misconduct if the name of any advocate appears in any newspaper, journal and suo mutu notices would be issued to the erring advocates. Therefore, the Bar Council appeals to all advocates to adhere to rule 36.

The council constituted a subcommittee to purchase land for its office.
