Q. I have a Celeron system with 733 MHz processor, 20 GB HDD, 810E Motherboard and SM56 Motorola Internal Modem with Win 2000 as operating system. My problem is that while installing modem the system asks for three options for the modem port (1) install on all port (2) com1 (3) com2. Which port I should opt for, please help.

Gurdeep Sidhu, Ludhiana

A. Normally, under Windows 2000, Motorola SM 56 PCI internal modem is installed automatically without any difficulty. But if you choose to install it manually then this kind of problem may occur. The internal modem is always installed on either Com 3 or Com 4. So, there’s no point installing it on COM1 or COM2, which are external serial port. The best way of installing the internal modem in this case is to uninstall it from Control Panel >Systems> Device Manager> and then restarting the system. Once you restart the computer, Windows 2000 will automatically install the internal modem on the correct port.

Q. I have an assembled computer P III 600 MHz with Intel 810 chipset motherboard and Window Me as operating system (Motorola internal modem). My problems are:

1 When I right click on any file ‘Send to desktop’ does not work. The Send to desktop icon has changed to an unknown application. How can I solve this problem?

2. I want to increase the speed of Internet connectivity. How can I do it?

3. I want to use Outlook Express-6 for my Yahoo! ID.

Deepak Moga, Muktsar

A. The option send to desktop actually creates a shortcut of the file on your desktop. However if this option is not working for any reason then the best solution is either restore it to the previous best setting when this option was working or reinstall Windows again. Regarding your second problem of increasing the Internet connectivity speed, I would suggest you to go through the previous editions of Login…Tribune, in which the methods of increasing the Internet connectivity speeds were discussed. However if you want a customised answer for your specific needs then please write back all necessary details of your modem and other necessary information. Regarding using Yahoo! e-mail in Outlook Express, please create a new identity and use the Yahoo! ID for the e-mail option and also the account. You should use the SMTP address as smtp.mail.yahoo.com and POP address as pop.mail.yahoo.com.

Q. I have a Packard Bell PC with 486 DX 66 processor, 4 MB RAM and 1 GB of hard disk. It was running well before I formatted the hard disk some time ago. After this, it sometimes gives an error while booting ‘Unexpected interrupt in protected mode’. I asked this from someone else who suggested that the problem might be because 486 do not support hard disks greater than 512 MB. Then I partitioned the disk into 3 logical partitions, all less than 512 MB. Though the system runs well yet it starts giving the same problem in between and on running the BIOS set-up again it runs well. Why does it give this problem? Is it a processor problem? If 486 really doesn’t support hard disks greater than 512 MB, then how did it run for 3 years so well. The CMOS of the system does not have any problem. I have checked it. The motherboard is also okay. Neither does the hard disk have any bad sectors or any other problem. It runs well on a Pentium machine.

Kamal, Mandi Gobindgarh

A. Normally, the capacity of hard disk, which can be used in your system, is determined by the BIOS in your system. The configuration, which you have mentioned, may support hard disks of 1 GB. But the old BIOS may create the kind of problem you have mentioned in your mail. Thus, in order to solve this problem please upgrade the BIOS in your system.

Q. I have an assembled PC with the following configuration: 10GB HDD, i810E Motherboard, 64MB RAM, Celeron 600MHz, LG CDROM 52X drive, Samtron 14" Monitor, Windows Me Operating System. My problem is that since past one month, after going on standby, the system gives the following error message: Error: OE: 0028: 9DC0040C, Press any key to continue. Kindly advise what this means and how can I rectify this problem.

S. Samuel, Bathinda.

A. The problem written by you is incomplete, as you have not mentioned the exact error message that you get. In this case it becomes difficult to solve the problem. In order to help us solve your problem, please mention the exact error message, which you get.

Q. I have P III with 64 MB RAM, Samtron 45Bn coloured monitor, 48x creative CD ROM Samsung keyboard with Windows Me as my OS. Whenever I start my computer it gives a blurred image that sets right after 15 to 20 minutes. Earlier I thought it was due to mist but that is not the case and the problem persists. I have defragged, scanned disk, and checked through Norton also. What is the reason and how could it be set right.

Rajiv Malhan, Nangal

A. I have not been able to understand your problem well. Please comprehend it well and also these mention it very clearly, whether this problem comes up at the basic screen only, or does it come at the time of loading operating system. However, from the face of it this appears to be a problem of your VGA card. You can check it, either by installing another VGA card in your system or by reinstalling the driver for the same. Even then if this problem persists you must consult your hardware vendor.

Q. I have a PC P III 600 with 20 GB HDD 64 MB RAM and Intel 810e motherboard. I have two Internet connections (Satyam and BSNL) and 3 mail accounts (Yahoo! Hotmail, Rediffmail ). I want to collect all my mails from Outlook Express after connecting the Net. Is it possible? If yes, how?

Rajan Vohra,
Ambala City

A. It is possible to collect e-mails from Yahoo! and Hotmail account in Outlook Express but it is not possible to collect the Rediffmail in your Outlook Express. Rediffmail, is a Web-based e-mail and its POP and SMTP services are not known for using it in your e-mail client. As far as configuring, the Hotmail account is concerned; this is a default feature in Outlook Express, whereas in the previous mail we had mentioned the method of configuring Yahoo! e-mail in your e-mail client.

Q. My system configurations is Intel Celeron 433 MHz, 128 MB RAM, 8.4 GB hard disk Tomato motherboard and Creative 52x CD ROM with Win Me as operating system. My problem is that my CD ROM does not work properly that is when I put CD in CD ROM the tray comes out after 10-15 seconds and no error message comes on the screen. Sometimes CD ROM works but hangs after installing 2 or 3 software. CD ROM works after too much time. Because of this I am unable to install my software. CD ROM also does not even pick data from the CD that is little scratched. Also there is no conflict in the device manager. So I do not know what is the problem. This problem has not even gone after installing Windows.

Gagan Deep Singh, Amritsar

A. The problem mentioned by you suggests two possible situations. One, the CD-ROM driver, which you use is not correct. Secondly, your CD-ROM, is quite dirty and needs servicing. As the first solution, try using a new driver of your CD-ROM. If it works, then your problem would be solved. Otherwise as a second solution, you may have to get your CD-ROM serviced and cleaned of all deposits and dirt, which have clogged it up. Normally, on the lens of CD-ROM, a black substance is deposited which creates this problem. Cleaning it up will not only solve your problem but also improve the performance of the CD ROM.

Q. I need your help in configuring my Outlook Express with Yahoo! account for sending and receiving e-mails. I am using an assembled PC with Celeron 850 Hz processor, 128 MB RAM, 810e chipset Vintron motherboard and Windows Me as operating system.

Dr Tejbir Singh Sandhu, Amritsar

A. Please refer to the answers mentioned above, for configuring Yahoo! e-mail account in Outlook Express. All necessary information including the POP and SMTP addresses have been mention. You can use this information to configure your Yahoo! e-mail account in Outlook Express.

Q. I have a P III, 750 MHz with 128 RAM. I use Window Me OS installed in my 20 GB hard disk computer. My problem is whenever I download any song or trailer from the Internet, it forms .rm or.ram extension files. I use Godzilla to download from the Internet.

Sumeet Garg, Ladwa

A. The file extensions .rm and .ra does not represent any problem. These files are called real audio and real video files and can be viewed by the real player, which can be downloaded from www.real.com for free. These files are smaller in comparison to the normal MB files and are very popular audio and video formats.
