Seminar on reproductive health

A seminar on ‘‘Reproductive health’’ was organised by the Department of Adult, Continuing Education and Extension, at Panjab University here today. At least 42 college teachers participated in the seminar. Prof O.N.Nagi, Dean, PGI, inaugurated the seminar. He said population control in India was still not 100 per cent though the country was the first to launch the family planning programme in 1952.

Professor Nagi said that the main objective of reproductive health was to have a safe sex life and an affordable choice for safe child health. He stressed upon spreading awareness on health education among students, teachers and the youth.

Dr Ajaib Singh, Director of the Adult Education Department,said that reproductive health was a state of complete physical,mental and social well being in all matters related to reproductive system and its functioning.

Dr Poonam Dhawan, Director of Centre for Adult, Continuing Education and Extension, University of Jammu, highlighted the emerging concern about risk behaviour among adolescents and said that there was a need to provide support service through counselling. She said that primary need of the hour was to impart education about HIV/AIDS, alcoholism, sexuality and safe sex.

Prof A.N.Sadhu, Dean, Academic Affairs, University of Jammu, and Prof O.P.Baru from University of Jammu, delivered special lectures on partnership-building and networking of university and college units in communicating information about reproductive health

Dr ( Mrs) Vanita Gupta from General Hospital, Sector 16, spoke on Prevention and safety of sexually transmitted diseases.

Prof B.N.S.Walia, a former Director of the PGI, spoke on ‘Care of the new born’. Dr G.S.Preet, Director of the Health Services, Punjab and Dr Madhu Gupta, University of Jammu, also spoke on the occasion.

Right diagnosis ‘can avoid surgery’

The Fortis Heart Institute here is focusing on the key area of bringing internationally-accepted hospital standards. Mr Shivinder M Singh, promoter and director of the project, said the institute had affiliated with Partners Health Care Systems — comprising founding hospitals, Massachusetts General Hospital and Brigham and Women Hospital. This would enable exchange and updating of clinical protocols related to cardiac care in accordance with the US standards.

It was being ensured that when a patient lands in the hospital, a uniform clinical protocol is followed. “We are trying to customise the world level health standards to the Indian standards”, he said.

Dr Nagendra Swamy, Medical Director of the institute, said every effort was being taken for standardisation of all parametres related to the healthcare at the institute. He said focus was also laid on diagnose-based treatment of patients. Right diagnose would ensure that a patient did not have to undergo avoidable surgeries.

He said it had been found that hospitals were not giving complete information to patients about their treatment and the options available to them.

Body for arthritis patients

On the occasion of World Arthritis Day, a public forum for arthritis patients is being organised at Command Hospital, Chandi Mandir, on October 12.

A statement issued here yesterday said that besides the clientele of the hospital, members of the general public will also be benefited from the forum.

A panel of rheumatologists from the Command Hospital and the PGI will answer patients’ queries and render advice. The forum will be chaired by Prof S.D. Deodhar, former head of the PGI’s Department of Medicine and Rheumatology.

Messages through compositions

Meaningful messages based on the theme of population explosion and its adverse effect on the environment and diseases like AIDS were sent across through beautiful compositions rendered by primary students on the third day of the Population Education Week organised by the State Institute of Education in Sector 32 here today.

About 25 teams from various government schools from Chandigarh and its vicinity participated in the contest, which is being organised to generate awareness about the ever- increasing population in the country, according to Mrs Jaswinder Kaur, a member of the organising committee.

The week that started with an on-the-spot drawing competition for the students has included activities for all. The second day was dedicated to the teaching community where a number of teachers participated in a slogan writing competition.

Harpreet nets victory for GCG-42 cagers

Chandigarh, October 10
Harpreet Kaur of the Sector 42 Government College for Girls proved to be the key player for her team by scoring 16 points in the team’s 36-21 victory over the Sector 11 Government College For Girls in the Panjab University Inter-college Zonal Basketball Tournament on the Panjab University grounds here today. The halftime score was 12-14 in favour of the winners. The other point winners for the Sector 42 college were Sarita (10), Babita (7) and Gunveen (3). For the losers, Ranjeeta scored 10 points, AmanVirk scored four points and Kavita three.

In the other matches of the day, the PU campus team beat the MCM DAV College for Women of Chandigarh, 44-40, with the halftime score being, 18-19, in favour of the eventual winners. In another match, the DAVC Hoshiarpur defeated Government College of Hoshiarpur, 51-20, and the halftime score was 27-12.

Mehak vs Mehak

Mehak will face Mehak Thakur in the final of the under-10 girls’ section of the Lake Club Open Tennis Tournament on the club courts here today.

In the under-12 girls’ section of the tournament, Inayat Khosla and Hana Kumar entered the final. Simer of Sacred Heart School sailed into the final of the under-14 section of the tournament. The under-14 boys’ final will have Karan Patnaik against Kinshuk Sharma, while in the under-16 section, Harneet Singh and Izreek Singh will clash for the title. In the under-12 boys’ section, the semi-finalists include Vijayant Malik, Viraj Gandhi, Deepinder Singh and Uday K. Punia.

School kabaddi

The Sector 32 Pandit Mohan Lal SD Public School beat the Sector 8 DAV Senior Secondary School, 49-26, in the final of the under-19 section of national-style kabaddi in the UT Inter-school Sports Meet. The final was played in the Sector 37 Government Senior Secondary School here today. The third place went to Government Senior Secondary School of Dhanas after the team beat the Sector 45 Government Senior Secondary School, 22-02.

In the under-17 section, Government High School-40, the GHS-28, the GHS-Mauli-Jagran and the GHS-Sarangpur made it to the semi-finals.

In the football events of the meet, the Sector 36 Guru Nanak Public School, the Sector 22 Government Model Senior Secondary School, the Sector 44 Shivalik Public School and the Sector 38 Government Model High School won their matches. In the handball matches, the Sector 8 DAV Senior Secondary School and the Sector 24 GHS reached the final of the under-14 section. In the hockey events, the Sector 35 Sri Guru Gobind Singh School in the under-17 section and St Stephen’s School and the Sector 44 GMHS-44 in the under-14 section won their matches.

Shooting camp

The Chandigarh Rifle Association will hold a week-long coaching camp for 21 shooters who have already been selected from various schools of the city. The shooters, who include boys as well as girls, shall attend he camp at the Sector 25 Patiali Ki Rao Shooting Ranges from October 12, according to Mr Vijay Pal Singh, General Secretary of the association. Mr Vijay said here today that these shooters would represent Chandigarh in the Vth All-India Kumar Surendra Singh Inter-school Championship at Badal village of the Muktsar district from October 20 to 24.

He also said this was for the third time that the UT-schools shooters would take part in this national-level tournament.

Cricket tourney

In the last league match of the PCA-Parle-G Cricket Tournament, the Sector 35 Government Model Senior Secondary School beat Paragon Public School by 230 runs. The Sector 35 school made 275 runs for five wickets in 45 overs, while Paragon School was all out for 45 runs.

Anjali, Gagandeep pocket carrom titles

Anjali Negi and Gagandeep Singh won the women’s and men’s singles titles, respectively, of the XIth Chandigarh State Carrom Tournament in the Sector 45 St Stephen’s School here today.

Gagandeep Singh of the Sector 46 Government College won a tough three-game match against Mohammad Irshad.

Anjali, too, had a tough three-game match against Saroj Chandel. The junior boys’ and girls’ titles went to Ramanpreet Pahwa and Shikha Nanda, respectively.

The men’s doubles title went to K.S. Patwal and Jagdish Dhir who beat Mukesh Piplani and B.H. Singh for it. Anjali Negi and Veena Dumra beat Saroj Chandel and Inder Kanta in a well contested women’s doubles final. B.S. Negi won the men’s veterans’ title.

Mr Sarabjit Singh, IPS, Director General Police of Punjab and the chief guest, gave away the prizes to the winners.

Results (finals): Men’s singles — Gagandeep b Mohammad Irshad, 8-25, 25-24, 25-24; women’s singles — Anjali Negi b Saroj Chandel, 23-17, 13-17, 25-05.

Girls’ singles’ — Shikha Nanda b Pallavi Piplani, 25-05, 25-00; boys’ singles’ — Ramanpreet b Dhruva, 25-08, 19-25, 25-07.

Sub-junior boys’ singles — Taranpreet b Ravinder, 23-09,21-06; veterans’ (men) — B.S. Negi b Sujas Raha, 24-25, 25-13, 25-16.

ESIC’s directive to employers

The Employees’ State Insurance Corporation, Chandigarh, has directed the employers covered under the ESI Act to submit their returns for the contribution period, ending September 30, by November 11, stated a press note of the corporation.

The press note further stated that the non-submission of returns by the due date would invite prosecution under the Act.
