Admn orders closure of Dasehra melas
Our Correspondent

Ludhiana, October 10
The district administration today ordered the winding up of Dasehra melas at Focal Point with immediate effect.

The decision came after a delegation of area residents led by Mr Hira Singh Gabria called on the Additional Deputy Commissioner, Mr S.R. Kaler, and apprised him of the situation arising after the unruly incident at the mela site on Monday night in which some persons, including a 14-year-old boy, were injured and some shots were fired in the air.

Mr Kaler told the delegation that the melas were illegal as no permission had been obtained by anyone to hold these melas.

Mr Gabria, who is a ruling Akali Dal MLA, told Mr Kaler that gambling, and vulgar dance shows, were being held in these melas. And since these were located close to the residential areas, these certainly affected the youth and children of these areas, and as such these melas should be banned immediately.

Mr Kaler told Ludhiana Tribune that instructions had been issued to the SDM concerned to get these melas closed down immediately.

Ludhiana Tribune had carried on a story on October 6 on how the mela had become a favourite haunt of criminals and thugs and how vulgar variety shows were going on there.

Meanwhile, the Focal Point police has registered a case under Sections 336, 323, 324,1 48 and 149 of the IPC against Mr Paramjit Singh, Mr Bhagwant Singh and six other persons on the complaint of Mr Parshottam Kumar, the cycle stand contractor who was injured in the retaliatory attack by supporters of Mr Paramjit Singh.

Mr Mukhwinder Singh, SHO, Focal Point, said a complaint on behalf of Mr Paramjit Singh and others would be registered after the injured boy, Ricky, who had been admitted to the CMC with serious head injuries, gave a statement to the police. The boy was reported to be in coma till noon today.
