Sacred Heart win Ludhiana, October 10 SAN Jain School won the toss and elected to bat first. Pawan (54) and Chinton Sehgal (34) helped their team to score 164 runs in 36 overs. For Sacred Heart School, Danish Bir took 2 for 22. Rohit and Ishwarjot scalped two victims each. Sacred Heart Convent School achieved the target in 34.2 overs after losing 8 wickets. Pranayvir Singh top-scored with 40 runs, followed by Ayush Dhar (20) and Nikhil (26). Pranav contributed 17 runs. National Games panel meeting Ludhiana, October 10 Mr R.S. Gill, Inspector General of Police (Zone I) and chairman of the committee, presided over the meeting which was attended by more than 40 officers from different cities. The meeting was held to chalk out the schedule to be followed during the games. A discussion was held about various ceremonies, including cultural programmes, march past, opening and closing ceremonies and mass band drills. The North Zone Cultural Centre, Patiala, would also hold a meeting shortly regarding programmes to be held during the course of the games, Mr Lottey said. The meeting was attended among others by Mr S.R. Kaler, Additional Deputy Commissioner (development), Mr Raminder Singh, Additional Commissioner, Municipal Corporation, Mr Harsuhinder Pal, Assistant Commissioner (general), Mr Pramod Ban, SP City II, Mr M.S. Admn orders closure
of Dasehra melas Ludhiana, October 10 The decision came after a delegation of area residents led by Mr Hira Singh Gabria called on the Additional Deputy Commissioner, Mr S.R. Kaler, and apprised him of the situation arising after the unruly incident at the mela site on Monday night in which some persons, including a 14-year-old boy, were injured and some shots were fired in the air. Mr Kaler told the delegation that the melas were illegal as no permission had been obtained by anyone to hold these melas. Mr Gabria, who is a ruling Akali Dal MLA, told Mr Kaler that gambling, and vulgar dance shows, were being held in these melas. And since these were located close to the residential areas, these certainly affected the youth and children of these areas, and as such these melas should be banned immediately. Mr Kaler told Ludhiana Tribune that instructions had been issued to the SDM concerned to get these melas closed down immediately. Ludhiana Tribune had carried on a story on October 6 on how the mela had become a favourite haunt of criminals and thugs and how vulgar variety shows were going on there. Meanwhile, the Focal Point police has registered a case under Sections 336, 323, 324,1 48 and 149 of the IPC against Mr Paramjit Singh, Mr Bhagwant Singh and six other persons on the complaint of Mr Parshottam Kumar, the cycle stand contractor who was injured in the retaliatory attack by supporters of Mr Paramjit Singh. Mr Mukhwinder Singh, SHO, Focal Point, said a complaint on behalf of Mr Paramjit Singh and others would be registered after the injured boy, Ricky, who had been admitted to the CMC with serious head injuries, gave a statement to the police. The boy was reported to be in coma till noon today. |

Course on human rights for cops Ludhiana, October 10 Inaugurating the course at the academy Mr A.P. Bhatnagar, Additional DGP (Investigation), Punjab State Human Rights Commission, said the police should change its style of functioning and behaviour while dealing with the people regarding violations of human rights. He also highlighted the concept, objective and working of state and national human rights commission. He also gave instances regarding the recommendations of the National Police Commission for amendment in the Indian Evidence Act and addition of Section 114-B in the Indian Evidence Act. The course had been designed under the guidance of Mr D.R. Bhatti, Additonal DGP and director of the institution. He said it was necessary for police officials to acquaint themselves with human rights and not to violate human rights. The police was the first agency which could given justice to the aggrieved party at the primary stage. Their main responsibilities was to ensure that no wrong should be caused to anyone. According to Mr Amarjot Singh Sidhu, Joint Director (Legal) and course
co-ordinator, about 35 police officers of the rank of SP and DSP from Punjab and other states were participating. The object of the course was to acquaint them to life, liberty, equality and dignity of the individual granted by the Constitution.
215 learner’s driving licences
issued Fatehgarh Sahib, October 10 This was disclosed by Mr Vikas Partap, Deputy Commissioner, while addressing a gathering after inaugurating such a camp jointly organised by the Lions Club and the DTO, near the Jyoti Saroop Gurdwara Chowk, here today. In the camp 215 licences were issued. The Deputy Commissioner informed that during a special campaign launched to put up reflectors on the rear side of tractor-tralers, more than 5,000 stickers had been pasted in the district through panchayats and field staff of Block Development and Panchayat Officers. He said special instructions had been issued to the staff to paste the stickers in the grain markets on the remaining trailers which bring the paddy for selling.
