Essay-writing contest results

Chandigarh, October 14
Seventyeight students of classes IX and X from 24 different schools in and around Chandigarh took part in an essay-writing competition which was organised by the State Institute of Education in Sector 32 as a part of the on-going Population Education Week.

The topic for the competition was “Population Education and Quality of Life.” The competition was conducted in three categories — English, Hindi and Punjabi.

The result of the competition is as follows:

English: first — Danny Sahai from Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 16, and Manish from Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 21; second — Ashish from Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 21; and third — Shweta from Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 19.

Hindi: first — Madhu from Government High School, Sector 38, and also Priyanka from Goverment Model High School, Sector 29; second — Anju from Government Senior Secondary School, Karsan; third — Charanjeet Kaur from Government High School, Sector 41.

Punjabi: first — Navpreet Kaur from Government Model High School, Sector 44; second — Rajpreet from Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 10; and third — Kanika from Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 19.

VC launches Web site

Chandigarh, October 14
Commemorating the historic day of establishment of Panjab University in 1882, the university launched its website of the IAS Centre, here today.

An official press note said Prof K.N. Pathak, Vice-Chancellor, inaugurated the centre. The Web site provides basic information to aspirants about the centre. It enlists the schedule of courses slated for the calender year 2002.

The address of the website is www.iasc.puchd.in. Application forms for ensuing UGC(Net)/ CSIR programmes are also available on the site.

NCC training camp concludes

Chandigarh, October 14
A traditional campfire and colourful cultural programme marked the conclusion of the annual training camp of No. 2 Chandigarh NCC Battalion at Barotiwala, near here.

A statement issued here yesterday said that Col Deepak Sharma, Group Commander, Chandigarh, was the chief guest on the occasion.

The camp, commanded by Lieut Col Surinder Kumar, started on October 3 and cadets participated in drill, weapon-training, firing and field craft. In addition, trekking, sports, cultural activities, treasure hunt and guest lectures on various topics were organised.

5,000 candidates appear in exams

More than 5,000 candidates from various parts of Punjab appeared in the examinations for accountants and draftsmen held yesterday. The examinations were held by the Directorate, Local Government, Punjab, in 12 examination centres.

Robbery case accused sent in judicial remand

All four accused arrested by the city police in a case of robbery were sent in a 14-day judicial remand today by a local court.

The accused Kapil Kumar, Rajinder Singh, Harish Kumar and Davneet Singh, impersonated as officials of the Crime Branch and forcibly took away cash and other valuables of a local financier, Mr Bharat Bhushan. The police had registered a case under Sections 170, 452, 394 and 120-B of the Indian Penal Code against the accused.

Rape case: A local politician and three others, allegedly involved in a case of rape and abduction, were sent in 14-day judicial remand on Saturday by a local court. The city police had arrested the four—Sweety Bajaj, Amardeep Dahia, Avtar Taari and Sangeeta Gupta on October 9. The incident had come to light after the victim made a statement before the UT Magistrate. It was alleged that the victim (15) had been raped on the intervening night of September 29 and 30. The victim was reportedly abducted by her friend Shweta Gupta and the latter’s mother Sangeeta Gupta, on the pretext of taking her to their house for a birthday party. It was alleged that when the victim reached the Manimajra residence of the Gupta’s, she was given a cold drink laced with a sedative. After that, the victim had allegedly been raped by Sweety Bajaj and the other two — Amardeep Dahia and Avtar Tarri.

A case was initially registered under Sections 366-A, 368, 506 and 120-B of the IPC. Later, Section 376 of the IPC was also added in the case.

Bail denied: A bail application moved by the accused in a Panjab University paper leakage case has been dismissed by a local court. The accused, Anurag Gupta, had filed a petition before the UT Additional Sessions Judge, Mr Lakhbir Singh.

Another accused in the case Dr Sodhi Ram has already been granted bail by the Supreme Court. Two others accused in the case had earlier obtained bail from the High Court.

Adulteration case: A local court granted an anticipatory bail to an accused in the case of petrol adulteration under the Essential Commodities Act on Tuesday. The accused, Gurmeet Kaur, was granted bail by the UT Additional District and Sessions Judge. Another accused in the case, Yog Raj, had already been granted bail by a local court. The case against the accused was registered under Sections 420, 286 and 120-B of the Indian Penal Code last year. The police while presenting the challan before the court added Section 7 of the essential commodities Act in the case.

Illicit liquor case: A local court dismissed a bail application filed by an accused in the illicit liquor case on Tuesday. Meanwhile, an other accused in the case has been remanded to judicial custody till October 23 by the court.

The accused, Harinder Pal Singla, a liquor contractor, had surrendered before a local court, on August 22.

The police had recovered around 3,500 litres of illicit liquor in the form of pouches, along with thousands of litres of rectified spirit (ethyl alcohol used for making liquor), artificial flavours and labels of famous brands from the factory of the accused on July 24.

Summons served: A local court served fresh summons to Punjabi pop singer Babbo Mann on Tuesday for his song “ Chak Lo Revolver, Raflan, Kabja Laina Hai”— title song of his album “Saun Di Jhadi”. The case had been registered on the complaint by Sandeep Kumar of Chandigarh and Ranju Priya of Mohali. The plaintiffs had sought a ban on the song. It was alleged that the song besides being obscene and indecent was also against peace and harmony.

Daily wage staff decry board’s decision

Seeking regularisation of their services in the light of a Punjab and Haryana High Court order, the daily wage employees of the Punjab School Education Board today lamented that the management of the board was unnecessarily linking their case with other writ petitions filed in the court.

At least 34 daily wage employees, who were also petitioners in the case, said acting on a petition filed by Sunita Bhandari and others, a Division Bench comprising Mr Justice Swatanter Kumar and Mr Justice R.S. Kathuria had directed the state of Punjab to consider the case of the petitioner in accordance with the policy of the government. They said the board management was linking their case with the case of contractual employees.

After the Secretary, Education Department wrote to the officials of the board to implement the orders of the court, the Secretary wrote back that the cases of contractual clerks was pending in the courts. However, the petitioners said linking their case with other cases was not the right thing to do.
