Sailors assigned to the ceremonial guard unit aboard USS LaSalle (AGF 3) parade the colors at the start of a celebration of the United States Navy's 226th birthday on Saturday. In 1972, the Chief of Naval Operations (CNO) Admiral Elmo R. Zumwalt officially designated on Saturday as the Navy's birthday. Each CNO since has encouraged a Navy-wide celebration of this occasion to enhance a greater appreciation of Navy heritage and to provide a positive influence toward pride and professionalism in the naval service. —REUTERS
