Sanjay school lift football title

Chandigarh, October 15
Sanjay Public Senior Secondary School, Sector 44, was declared winner in the final of the Chandigarh Junior Football Championship, played here at Panjab University grounds, when the rival team, SD Public School, Sector 32, were charged with fielding a player whose name was not in the final list of players. No team could score any goal in the stipulated period. In the tie-breaker, SD School won 10-9. It was pointed out that the winning team had fielded Kulwinder Singh, who was overage according to the eligibility criteria for junior section. In the list submitted by SD school to the Chandigarh Football Association (CFA), the name of Kulwinder was missing and Rohit, whose name was in the list, was not present on the ground.

Confirming this, Mr Rakesh Bakshi, secretary of the CFA, said the technical committee took the decision late in the evening. He said it was bad on part of the SD school that they played foul in a tournament for the SD Trophy. Their name was scratched by the committee.

AG Punjab win

AG Punjab overpowered AG Haryana 25-14, 25-23, 25-19 to lift the volleyball title in the Atma Ram Memorial Volleyball Tournament-2001 organised at Central Scientific Instruments Organisation, Sector 30. Prof K.R. Sarma, former director, CSIO who was the chief guest, gave away the prizes.

Under-18 cricket

DAV Senior Secondary School, Sector 8, Chandigarh, outplayed Hindu Sabha School, Amritsar, by 64 runs to move into the semifinals of the super league of the PCA Parle-G Inter-School Under-18 Cricket Tournament. In other matches, Atmaram Kumar Sabha Senior Secondary School, Patiala beat SSD Senior Secondary School, Bathinda, by nine wickets to sail into the last four.

Brief scores: DAVSSS-8: 175 all out (Sidharth Sharma 30, Asim Gupta 21, Karan 27, Naresh 31, Sohit 3 for 39, Sunny 2 for 35, Abinash 2 for 13); Hindu Sabha School: 111 all out (Sunny Khosla 53, Jagvir Singh 15, Naresh 4 for 11, Asim 2 for 30, Prashant 2 for 12).

Volleyball meet

The Chandigarh Volleyball Association will hold the UT Sub-Junior and Junior Volleyball Championships from October 23 to 25 at sports complex, Sector 7. According to Mr B.L. Malhotra, honorary secretary of the association, the players born on or after January 1, 1984 are eligible for participation in junior section. Players born on or after January 1, 1986, can participate in sub-junior section.

MCC election schedule by month-end

The Election Commission will announce the schedule for the elections to the Municipal Corporation of Chandigarh and panchayats of the Union Territory by the end of the month.

This was stated here today by the Joint Election Commissioner, Delhi and Chandigarh, Mr D. M. Khaneta.

Mr Khaneta clarified that panchayat elections would not be affected by the cases pending in the Punjab and Haryana High Court. He said the list of the Returning officers and Assistant Returning Officers had not yet been finalised. He said the training of the polling staff would begin by the end of the month.

He said to ensure free and fair elections, the commission might assertion antecedents of the polling agents of different polling parties. Mr Khaneta said the date of elections, to be held simultaneously, had not yet been decided.

Postal Department workers awarded

Ms Aparna Mohile, member of the Postal Services Board (Infrastructure and Financial Services), gave away awards to those members of the staff who had excelled in various fields in the functioning of the Postal Department.

An official spokesman said Mr M.K. Khan, Senior Superintendent of Post Offices, Ludhiana city, was awarded the first prize for significant services to the growth of speed post in the state. While Punjab earned a revenue of Rs 6.81 crore during the previous year , Ludhiana city contributed earned Rs 2.57 crore which was 38 per cent of the total. Chandigarh and Jalandhar stood second and third, respectively in the growth of speed post in the state.

Ms Mohile appreciated the role played by Punjab in various functions of the department like speed post, rural postal life insurance, postal life insurance, computerisation and introduction of new services. She appreciated the growth of postal life insurance and rural postal life insurance in the state during the previous year. The state had earned Rs 30.24 crore against the target of Rs 23 crore and Rs 60.92 crore against the target of Rs 2 crore.

Encroachments removed

Chandigarh, October 15
The Municipal Corporation of Chandigarh (MCC) and the Estate Office here today carried out a joint encroachment removal drive at Burail.

Around 10 trucks had to do 20 rounds to clear the debris and the impounded rickshaws and tyres, an official said here today. However, encroachment removal went on without any resistance. Around 20 cattle were also caught by the authorities.

Two JCBs, 10 trucks, 30 policemen and 30 labourers were deployed to carry out the operation.

In the evening, the corporation authorities had started putting up railings to check re-encroachment of the area. The Municipal Commissioner, Mr M.P. Singh, and the Chief Engineer, Mr Manmohanjit Singh, later visited the area.
