Elaborate security arrangements have been made and traffic diversions arranged for by the Punjab police and the UT police in view of the procession being taken out by various religious, political and social bodies from Tarkhan Majra village in Fatehgarh district to Chandigarh tomorrow.

Six robberies in one night

Zirakpur, October 16
Robbers struck at four houses, a farmhouse and a tubewell in Zirakpur, Nabha, Bhabhat and Chhat villages, stabbed a labourer, beat up 19 persons brutally and decamped with cash, jewellery and valuables worth thousands of rupees late last night.

Major Bhatnagar’s dismissal confirmed
Chandigarh, October 16
Major Maneesh Bhatnagar’s sentence of dismissal from service, awarded by a General Court Martial here in July, has been confirmed by the convening authority. The confirmation, received from Headquarters 14 Corps, Leh, was conveyed to him at N-Area here today. He had been placed under close arrest since yesterday afternoon.

Lion cub dies of pneumonia

Prolonged illness claimed the life of a nine-month-old-lion cub, while it was being taken to the Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana for treatment by Chhat Bir Zoo authorities today.

PU’s improvement exam issue under study

Counting of Senate ballots on Oct 22

Panjab University has decided to go ahead with the counting of the ballots of the graduates’ constituency in the Senate elections which had remained sealed in ballot boxes due to a litigation against the candidature of one of the contestants.

DTO, SP (Traffic) told to appear in court

Taking up a petition filed by the Ludhiana-based Local Mini Bus Operators Union and 23 others seeking action against the operation of unauthorised three-wheelers and other vehicles in the city, Mr Justice Jawahar Lal Gupta and Mr Justice Ashutosh Mohunta of the Punjab and Haryana High Court today directed the District Transport Officer and the Superintendent of Police (Traffic) to be present in court on October 29.

Arrest warrant for Col Sandhu issued

A local court today issued arrest warrants for Col B.S Sandhu, owner of a local immigration consultancy firm, and his relation, Gurpreet Singh Sandhu, in a theft case.

HC notice to school Principal

Taking up a petition alleging “utter disregard” of the court orders directing the provisional admission of a student to class V, Ms Justice Bakshish Kaur of the Punjab and Haryana High Court has issued notice to the Principal of Sector 26 St John’s High School asking her to show cause why proceedings under the Contempt of Court Act should be not initiated against her.

Koser couple to be awarded

GMCH employees stage dharna

Employees of Government Medical College and Hospital, Sector 32, today staged a demonstration in protest against the suspension of two staff nurses of the hospital. A press note issued by the Government Medical College and Hospital Employees said inquiries revealed that the fault in performing a wrong operation was of a Senior Resident of the ENT Department who prepared OT list .

Scientist hammers human cloning
Chandigarh, October 16
For the past four years, French scientist Dr Bohdan Wasylyk has been heading a research group on identification and study of genes involved in cancer progression. Under the project, which includes doctors from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) as well, the visiting scientist has been studying the pathogens involved in cancer.

Doc suspended for negligence
Chandigarh, October 16
The authorities at the Government Medical College and Hospital, Sector 32, today suspended a doctor and two nurses for their alleged involvement in a case of negligence in which a woman, Saroj, admitted to the hospital for surgery of nose, had been operated on her throat.

TT tournament from Oct 19
Chandigarh, October 16
Prof RS Mehta memorial Open Table Tennis tournament will be held from October 19 to 21 at the Sector 23 TT hall, in which paddlers from Haryana, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh and Chandigarh will take part. According to a press note, the events to be held included- men singles, women singles, junior boys and girls singles, cadet boys and girls.
