Shaifi, Sahil excel

Two students of Green Land Senior Secondary School, Ludhiana, by their outstanding performance in the field of sports have made their school feel proud, according to a press note issued by Ms Baldeep Pandher, Principal of the school.

Shaifi Wadhwa, a student of Class XII, gave a stupendous performance to finish third in the CBSE Sahodhya Badminton Tournament held at Gobindgarh. She finished runner-up in the Senior Secondary Schools Zonal Tournament . Shaifi has also been selected as a member of the district team for the Punjab State Inter District Badminton Tournament to be held at Nawanshahr.

Another student of this school, Sahil Sharma, a table tennis player, won laurels when he was declared the state cadet champion. He also secured first position in the sub- junior category in the Prithipal Singh Memorial Open Table Tennis Tournament held recently in which many national and international players participated. He has been selected to lead Ludhiana team in the Punjab State Public Senior Secondary Schools Tournament scheduled to be held at Amritsar later this month.

Huge grants for development works

Mr Charanjit Singh Atwal, Punjab Vidhan Sabha Speaker, inaugurated a 24-hour power-supply project for Dholanwal, Kalas Kalan, Kalas Khurd and Sattiana villages. He also released Rs 85,000 in grants for development to Dholanwal, Rs 90,000 to Kalas Kalan and Rs 50,000 to Sattiana for the cleaning of pond. Grants of Rs 1 lakh each were given to Mand Chaunta, Kalas Khurd, Kandiana Khurd, Mattewara, Raur and Thaunkan Gujjran villages.

Grants of Rs 50,000 each were given to Garcha and Boothgarh Banjara villages for the pavement of streets and drains, while Garhi Fazil received Rs 25,000 for the development of a cremation ground. Mattewara received Rs 50,000 for the development of a ‘harijan dharamshala’ and the Sports Club of Gaunsgarh received Rs 11,000 aid.

Mr Atwal said the state government had decided to allot a five-marla plot to each homeless family in villages where the panchayats had surplus land.

The Assembly Speaker addressed the gatherings at functions for the disbursement of cheques under the shagun scheme in more than a dozen villages of the Koom Kalan Assembly segment. “Punjab is the first state in the country to give a Rs 5,100 ‘shagun’ to each girl of every Scheduled Caste family in the state, at her marriage. The government has released a Rs 75.41 crore under the scheme in the past four years and another Rs 27 crore shall be disbursed under the scheme in the current financial year,” the Speaker said.

He said all eligible families had been issued cheques under the shagun scheme in the area.
